This week, we are continuing our study of clothes.

Miss Irene’s class will be talking about “What special clothes do people wear for work.” Last week, Miss Martha brought in her sewing machine and showed the children what it was and how it works. She sewed some things in

City Park

our playhouse that needed to be fixed. We also made a pillow for some of the children.

Miss Bousha’s class made a clothes line in their dramatic play area. They will be looking at different clothes that people wear for different jobs. They will also making hats to represent different careers as well. We invite any parents that wear a uniform to work, to come in and share their job with us. Miss Bousha’s class will be looking at “How do people make clothes.” Miss Martha will bring in her sewing machine and show this class what it is and how it works. They will make pillows as well. The children will be making a class loom to see how fabric is made. The children will also be weaving streamers out on the fence outside.

State and First Five Classes: What grows on trees? That is the question for this week. This week we will be viewing and exploring “What grows on trees?” The children will be able to plant their own fruit seed of their choice! They can choose from apples, melon, rosemary or watermelon. They will be able to observe their seeds over a period of time and also explore different types of fruits that grow on trees. Our children will be creating art using fruits and also the sensory tub will be filled with fruit objects as well. They will be able to smell, taste, and feel fruits this week such as watermelon, strawberries, apples and melon . Calvert: This week in Calvert we are wrapping up our Nature and trees theme. We will focus on the letters O, Y, K and the number , 17. We will be using the color white, and the shapes of rectangles in our weekly art and patterning. The children will be planting their own seeds and reading the book of “Jack and the Beanstalk” as well. After reading “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” the children will make their own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees, and collaging with ABC stickers just like the story! In Art, we will be painting with a variety of objects from nature such as pine needles, rocks and leaves. We have activities planned where the children can take home their own dolls made of twigs, make playdough with leaves and make sun-catchers with different objects from outdoors.

Main Y School Age: This week we will be studying the life cycles of bugs! The children will learn about the specific types of bugs that go through the four stages of metamorphosis. We will be reading and writing about these bugs and creating a cycle log and makings poems on the bug of their choice. We will challenge the kids to venture outside and look for various bugs and tell us, if they think that particular bug goes through the metamorphosis stage. By the end of the week, the children will be hands on with the bugs outdoors, making their own bugs with dough, and writing their own beautiful poems about their bug. We are including more outdoor activities this week to explore the grounds and the bugs that live among us.

P A G E 3

Last week, the teens had a great time creating Magazine Art. They did a past, present, and future collage, they really enjoyed it and had fun doing many activities and crafts. They are still working on the Mural Art of themselves in the future. They also had a great time doing Karaoke showing their talents. Next week the teens will be having a great time doing Empanadas, Yummy!! We have two students that love to cook and they want to become chefs. This will be a nice experience for them and the rest of the teens. We will also be looking ahead into the future and teaching them job skills along with creating their own resume and learning how to apply for colleges/scholarships. Throughout the week we will also be doing some fun activities and team building exercise to have a fun week.

trees, and why in Japan people utilize Cherry Blossom Trees as a symbol of traditional art and many other activities. The United States and Japan celebrate friendship every year at the National Cherry Blossom festival in Washington, D.C. to continue their close relationship between the two countries. In addition to this information our children will make a huge cherry Blossom Tree for our bulletin board. Also, they will make a cherry blossom painting. State Toddlers – This week we will be learning about Gardening with Discovery. We will be planting a bean, we will see if it grows in a zip lock or in a jar. We will go on a nature walk and collect items we see outside like leaves and flowers, we will then use them to paint. We will make a creative art project with tissue paper, pasta, spray bottles, glue, and paint. We will also lace on construction paper with pasta on pipe cleaners. In math, we will be matching seeds & different insects.

First 5 Toddlers - We will be working on a garden theme. Some of the activities we will be working on include flower painting, finger painting, art collages with a variety of materials, planting seeds, watering the flowers and grass outside, stacking garden themed cups, and singing “this is the way we plant our seeds.” Preschool Classroom 1 – This week our class will be talking about things that are special about our building. We will read stories about buildings in the city. Children will get to see how some tools work. Children will begin work on their three dimensional buildings. Preschool Classroom 2 – We will be continuing our study of balls. Children will be communicating with each other if all balls bounce. Teachers will use sorting activities that children will use. The children will do a cause and effect experiment where children will guess which type of ball bounces the highest (rubber, plastic, metal etc.) Preschool Classroom 3- We will be discussing how they grow from a seed into a large tree. What they do for the environment and how they help with the air we breathe. How we use trees, and importance of trees for our daily living. Make tree designs and have tree paintings School Age– Children will be working in small groups by age to come up with 3D art project relating to science. Children will be planning art projects and begin research. Children will be playing games in small groups such as dominoes, checkers etc.. Outside organized games that will be played this week basketball.

Merrill is working and exploring with the curriculum study, called Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. We are excited to use a variety of reusable materials in creative ways. The children are learning what reusing is and how we can make the most out of what we have. They will learn how and why trash can be reused and that something useful can be made out of trash.

The will be asked, questions like: Where does the trash go? What do workers do there? Should we dump this item or should we recycle it? This will give the children an opportunity to critical think and use their imagination. The children will be asked to draw a picture to where they think the trash goes, and what the workers taking the trash do. We will invite children to sing a song called the, “Recycle Song.” The children will sing along, and learn how fun it is to reuse items we would throw away and share ideas with each other.

In addition, the children will listen to books called, “Sam Helps Recycle and Peter’s Chair.” They will be asked, What happen to Peter’s old things? Did his parents throw his old things in the trash? The children will be able to identify what they think is a recyclable item and a non-recyclable item is from the story. They will be able to share what they liked about the stories. They will learn new vocabulary words, such as litter, incinerator, fireplace, bottle caps, batteries, can crusher, old, and take apart.
