Did you know that the Corona-Norco Family YMCA is helping children and families weather the economic storm? Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. The Y now operates eight program sites with a continuum of care for children in the Corona-Norco and Jurupa Valley Unified School Districts ages 18 months to high school.

We are always looking for support from our community. If you would like more information of how you can help, please contact Lorena Gomez (951) 736-1415 or [email protected] The Corona-Norco Family YMCA is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization classified by the Internal Revenue Service.

Thank you for your continued support of YOUR YMCA!

Teen Center P A G E 3

We have a vast genre of activities for teens, youth, and adults. Teens have the options to participate in physical activities like basketball, or arts and crafts, and even with educational activities such as tutoring and homework help Mondays through Fridays from 2pm to 6pm. Our teens are really excited to be participating in a chili cheese nachos and hotdogs fundraiser for the Women’s Leadership Conference. (All proceeds will go towards this sponsorship.) The teens also had a really good time playing with board games such as Apples to Apples, Connect Four, and Uno, and doing their own watercolor art. On the last days of the week the teens enjoyed a hot cup of chocolate and the presentation film “I Am Sam”. Next week the teens will be participating in exciting activities such as building wooden birdhouses, making tye-dye bandanas, and crafting their own unique duct tape wallets. To conclude our fun week the teens will be participating in a pajama and hot chocolate party.

We also offer Zumba Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday’s: 10-11 am and 6-7pm. The classes are only $3.00. From week to week the Zumba classes range from classic Latin Salsa, merengue, to today’s modern pop music. It is a wonderful way to unwind and relax after a long day as well as dancing your way into a better you! We had a lot of fun at our Zumba party which last Friday night!

We also offer Senior Classes $5.00 per class. We have our Instructor Maureen Brunnler offering Core work out with Pilates and Yoga on Thursday’s from 9:30-10:30am. We have our Cardio Fitness class on Monday’s from 11-12noon. We would like to invite all seniors in our community to our classes.

Home Gardens Library is gearing up for its annual summer reading program, Juntos Leemos. Our theme this year is Read to the Rhythm, and we're looking forward to collaborating with our local YMCA on some lively activities. All ages, including pre-readers, kids, teens and adults, are invited to sign up for the program where you earn prizes for reading books and attending events. Our kick-off event will be at 4pm on June 3. Along with our regular events, we will also have special programming every Thursday from 4-5pm starting June 16. Our big summer event will be a talent show on July 30 (sign up at the library). For more information, contact the library at 951-279-2148.

Our Corona-Norco family YMCA staff volunteered on Saturday, May 16 at the Corona Rotary Lobsterfest. It is an annual event and we thank the Corona Rotary for their continued support of our organization!

Jurupa Toddlers - During this week we will expand our learning of the farm theme. Children will discuss what animals they care for at home. Some of the activities we will be doing include a farm puppet show, farm animal dress up, and sponge painting. Children will touch different objects such as cotton balls and fabric to feel the difference in textures.

Preschool 1 – This week we will be expanding our creative curriculum study of balls. We will be exploring why balls bounce and different shapes and sizes. We will be exploring outside by painting with balls, placing paint on the ball and bouncing them with the children. Our ball of the week is a baseball and we will be exploring this ball. Our song for the week is “Take Me out to the Ball Game” Preschool 2 – We are getting back to our study on balls. The children will be exploring what games are played with balls. The staff will introduce some different types of balls and allow the children to play with them. We will explore how high the balls bounce and if the shape of the balls effects how it bounces or rolls. Preschool 3 - This week we will expand our creative curriculum study on buildings. Our focus will study some different buildings in our community such as the grocery store, drug store, and different stores that we visit in our neighborhood. The kids will share what types of stores they visited during the week with their parents School age – This week we will expand our learning of focusing on health issues. We will be discussing Healthy living, in the area of healthy teeth and healthy eating. We will do a science activity dealing with health teeth. We will discuss why brushing their teeth is a big health issue and how often people should get their teeth checked. The children will also be discussing healthy foods they eat at home.

This week we will begin our new study on Music Making. The teachers will start a collection of homemade and standard instruments for the children to explore. As the collection grows the teachers will be talking about the individual instruments and music making materials.

In the art center, the children will be making guitars out of cardboard and lacing up them up with yarn. In the math area, the children will be counting pictures of different instruments and writing their number to match the number of instruments. In the

discovery center, we will have guitars to “play”. Who knows, we may have some future musicians in our classes. Outside, the children will play a friendly game of “musical

chairs”.

The children will learn about what Memorial Day is and why we celebrate Memorial Day. They will write a poem about the importance of Memorial Day. The Kinders will draw their thoughts about Memorial Day. They will make a flag, star bracelet, and necklace. They will write letters to the military troops in appreciation of their service. Our children will also draw the Statue of Liberty and color it in. We will also assist the children with homework and spend some time outside playing with the balls and jump ropes. We will play musical chairs and have bike and relay races.

circumstances. Their development occurs when they are exposed to explore and interact with other children, which is why this week children will have the opportunity to experiment and discover the Life Cycle of the Ladybug. It will be interesting to find out how many spots they have, how many different stages of life they have, how long can they live, how many species, how many colors, and when do they hibernate? In addition to this information children will make a Life Cycle of the Ladybug, Ladybug, and a Ladybug treat with Ritz, cream cheese, cherry tomatoes, and black olives. For literacy they will have dictation and illustration day based on the Book “The Grouchy Ladybug.” Friday children will have game day. Enjoy!!

After they are done painting with the bubble they will get to jump on it too. They will be reading “The Adventures of Gary and Harry” and then drawing a picture about the story. Be sure to look on the bulletin board for the pictures they drew. Ms. Christina and Ms. Bousha’s class will be doing a variety of art projects this week including wax paper art, blow painting with straws, squishy paint art and foil painting. They will be reading the book “Sam helps Recycle.” We are also practicing our songs for graduation.

A reminder to parents that there is a Parent Meeting this week on Thursday, May 21st at 6:00pm. The topic will be “How to help your child succeed in Kindergarten.” All parents are required to attend, please make proper arrangements to attend.

Main Y STATE: Last week in State, we explored Earth, this week we will investigate animals and environments around the world. As a class, we will be painting environments and discussing where in the world we would see these types of environments. Children will be making animals such as snakes, penguins, and loins. We will be discussing which type of environment these animals live in. CALVERT: During the upcoming week, we will be working with Disney movie favorites! Movie introductions will be done at circle time by storytelling and picture identification. Our children will have hands on with a variety of mediums to create unique crafts to represent/symbolize each movie! We will be sending home a family project this week. It will be to create a “unique car” using card board boxes and any other mediums or objects of their choice. The “car” will be due on May 29th, and a car race will be done that afternoon!! SCHOOL AGE: Last week, we had Officer Tarrant, from the Corona Police Department, visit us and discuss the importance of his job and how difficult his job is. He explained the importance of following the rules and why these rules are important. He talked about and reviewed with the kids about “Stranger Danger.” We had such a great time with Officer Tarrant and he even stayed to sit in at snack time with the children. What a wonderful experience this was for us all. Thanks again to Officer Tarrant. This week we will be rapping up the school year with focusing on writing, practicing our writing skills, focusing on capitals, punctuation and spelling review.
