What are metaphors and similes?

Metaphors                    Similes

Metaphors describe different things, saying that they are the same when in fact they are not.

The children in my class are a dream.

My friend is a greedy pig.

Similes compare different things, saying that they are like each other but not exactly the same. Similes often use the words like and as.

I feel as cold as ice.

Tom ran like a cat being chased by a dog.

Can you write a metaphor? Can you write a simile?

Tuesday 7th July 2020To recognise character feeling and emotions.

Inside the body you will write their emotions and feelings that they feel inside. For example, nervous. (Try and be as imaginative and creative as you can with your choice of words. You may like to use a thesaurus to find more complex alternatives).

Outside the body you write about your physical feelings. For example, My legs ached uncontrollably as I plowed through the thick snow.

(These are likely to be short sentences as oppose to the single words inside the body).

As I gripped onto the solid rock of the mountain, it rubbed against my skin like sandpaper.

Think back to yesterday's starter. Can you sort these sentences into similes and

metaphors?

The little girl was as good as gold.

The butterfly was as beautiful as a summers day.

The tall mountain loomed overhead like a skyscraper.

The baby is the apple to his mum's eye.

The world is stage.

The world is like a stage.

The teacher is a mean ogre.

Wednesday 8th JulyTo plan a scene description, highlighting the dangers of the environment.

Watch this video and imagine you are climber  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R2gb0MKJlo

What can you hear, see and smell?

What would you be feeling?

How does the weather change on the mountain?

What are the dangers that you may face on the mountain?

1. Start with writing down all the nouns for what you can see, hear and smell on the mountain.2. Then add an adjective to describe that noun.3. Then add a verb to describe what that noun is doing.4. Then jot down any dangers which you may write about.   Challenge: Can you include a simile or metaphor to describe.

Thick clouds slowly drifting by. A blanket of snow glistened from the reflecting sun.

The mountain summit towered overhead.

The rumble of thunder echoed. The fine drizzle of rain rapidly turned into hail, cutting my skin like a razor-sharp knife.

Dangerous, burning rays.

My chances of reaching the summit were like a distant dream.

Altitude sickness.

Sun damage.

Hypothermia.

Lose buddy.

Injury from walking.

Thursday 9th July 2020To write a scene description, highlighting the dangers of the environment.

Look back at your plan from yesterday. Today you will be using your plan and adding more information to write a paragraph describing a mountain scene and its dangers.

Here are some sentence openers/ fronted adverbials that you might like to use:

In the distance,           All of sudden,

To my surprise,       Slowly,      Feeling nervous,

Before long,     Without warning,     Unexpectedly,

The mountain summit towered overhead with thick clouds slowly drifting by. A blanket of snow glistened from the reflecting sun, disguising the dangerous burning rays as beauty. In the distance, the rumble of thunder echoed through, a storm was brewing and I was feeling unprepared. As I ascended the altitude grew and I struggled to catch a breath, feeling dizzy, the landscape became a blur. The fine, drizzle of rain started to gently pat against my skin, rapidly turning to hail with a razorsharp cut. My chances of reaching the summit now seemed far from reality like a distant dream.

Using what you know about similes and metaphors, can you finish the sentences below, changing them to either a simile or metaphor?

Friday 10th July 2020To create a story board plan.

Today you will be creating a story board about a journey up a mountain. You will then use this to write your story next week.

You will need to link your story to the previous lessons, making sure that you include:

description of the surroundings   feelings and emotions   dangers that you face   how you overcome the dangers

Challenge: can you include a simile or metaphor in your storyboard?

Box 2 and 3  Introduce a problem that your mountaineer will face.

Box 4, 5 and 6  How will the problem be resolved? Finish with an interesting ending.

Mountain climber is close to the summit and enjoying climbing.

Mountaineer stranded alone with suspected broken foot.Tries to phone rescue team with little luck. Mountaineer recaps on the event. Why did she insist that she could climb alone?
