    (Foreword)

God is the absolute reality endowed with all auspicious and excellentattributes. He is the inner controller of allcit (beings) andacit (matter). Thej̄ıvātman enters the physical body appropriate to its pastkarma (actions)and transmigrates in the cycle of births and deaths (sam. sāra). God, out ofcompassion for the souls, bestowsvedic knowledge throughbrahma and alineage of saints and sages. Thevedas discuss the nature of God, nature ofsouls, causes ofsam. sāra and ways to get out of it.

Vedas prescribe several duties for individual souls to come out ofthissam. sāra. They are classified asnitya karmās, or daily duties, andnaimit-tika karmās, or occasional duties. The much extoledsandhyāvandanacomes undernitya karma, or daily duties. We have ample references regard-ing sandhyāvandana in vedas, smr. tis, rāmāyan. a, mahābhārata andvis. n. u purān. a. The procedure of worship ordained here is by offeringarghya at the timeof sunrise and sunset while meditating onāditya (sun god) and chantinggāyatr̄ı.

Aditya represents puresatva characteristics and it is He who looks afterthe health of the entire world. The individual soul is enveloped withrajo gun. aandtamo gun. a. These adverse vices can be wiped out by offeringarghyato the Almighty God in the form of sun and meditating ongāyatr̄ı.pr

Worship througharghya is a process by which̄aditya within us can beinvoked and whose qualities can be acquired.Vedas declare that̄aditya in thesky and thēaditya within our body is one and the same. Thevedic statementruns like this.

The meaning is that thearghya offered from the palms of the worshipperdestroys demons known asmantehās attacking the sun. This statement in theveda has a great significance.

Vedas are referred to astraȳı, that is,vedic statements have three mean-ings, namely, external, internal and philosophical. Amongthem, the philoso-phical meaning is important. The element of sun in our body isclouded by ourrajo gun. a andtamo gun. a. Thearghya offered at the feet of̄aditya at sun-rise and sunset will help free the individual soul from the above-mentioned evil qualities. The word in thevedic statementmantehās refersto the devils in our body.Iśāvāsya upanis.ad of śukla yajurveda andchāndogya upanis.ad refer toāditya vidyā, that is,sandhyāvandana.

The entire process ofsandhyāvandana is centered aroundarghyapradāna andgāyatr̄ı japa. In addition to this,̄acamana,mārjana, āsana,prān. āyāma andupasthāna are also important.

The gāyatr̄ı mantra is a very powerful one. Allvedas extol theefficacy ofgāyatr̄ı mantra. There is novedic yāga in which this great

Acharya Saṅkara extols thegāyatr̄ı japa in many places. Theguruparamparā, a biographical work of́sr̄ıvais.n. ava ācāryas, recordsthat ācārya rāmānuja was offeringarghya in sandhyāvandana beingsupported by two persons even at the ripe age of 120.

The vedas and the treatises thereunder, that is,smr. tis, convey My com-mands. Whoever violates them, commits treason. Even if he beMy devotee,he is by no means avais. n. ava.

Sandhyāvandanam refers to the worship of sun duringsandhyā, themeeting point of day and night, and, fore and after noon. The prayer at sunriseis calledprātah. sandhyāvandanam, that at noon is calledmādhyāhnikasandhyāvandanam, and that at sunset is calledsāyam. sandhyāvanda-nam. Thus, sandhyāvandanam is performed three times in a day.

The benefits ofprātah. sandhyāvandanam are most (or maximum)when performed before sunrise and stars are visible, average when performedbefore sunrise but stars have disappeared, poor after sunrise, as described bythe following verse.

Ideally, theprātah. sandhyāvandanam should be started before sun-rise and concluded at sunrise. Similarly thesāyam. sandhyāvandanamshould be started before sunset and concluded at sunset (local time). Thesetimings are from considerations of maximum benefit. However, it is impor-tant to note that benefits will be there even when there are departures andthis has been recognized in thesmr. tis. As a part ofsandhyāvandanam, mantras associated with atonement are incorporated by way ofprāyaścittaarghyam. Every individual, who has undergoneupanayanam, the sacredthread ceremony, should therefore strive to performsandhyāvandanam at atime as close to sunrise or sunset as possible but should not give it up due to cir-cumstances. A person who is unwell can also performsandhyāvandanammentally without water. In the event of long journeys when itis inconvenientto performsandhyāvandanam, the entire procedure can be done mentally, irrespective of the dress one is wearing. This is calledmānasika sandhyā-vandanam. Also, in the present-day world we are in, it is sometimes notpractical to performmādhyāhnika sandhyāvandanam at the prescribedtime and place. In such circumstances,mādhyāhnika sandhyāvandanamcan be performed soon afterprātah. sandhyāvandanam.

Eachsandhyāvandanam is done after taking a normal bath of pouringadequate amount of water over your body, from head to foot. This is calledvārun. a snānam. Although there are other forms of physical baths recog-nized in thevedas, there is also one that can be performed mentally withoutwater. This is calledmānasika snānam. In the present-day world, it may notbe practical to performvārun. a snānam before eachsandhyāvandanam. In such circumstances,mānasika snānam can be substituted. Formāna-sika snānam, mentally comprehend the Lotus Feet of the Lord and imaginethat the sacred water of thevirajā (heavenly river) from His feet flowing allover your body. Recite the hymn below and sprinkle water overyour head.

As mentioned earlier, sandhyāvandanam is performed by an individualafterupanayanamwhich is avedic ritual that includes wearing ofyagnopa-v̄ıtam, the sacred thread, and initiation into thegāyatr̄ı mantram. Thetermupanayanam consists of two words, namely, upa, meaning near, andnayanam, meaning to fetch. The significance of the termupanayanam isthat a teacher leads, or initiates the student towards the enquiry into the natureof brahman, or the Supreme Deity. To denote the importance of this aspect oftheupanayanam sacrament, it is sometimes calledbrahmopadeśam, eventhough it is just one of the events in theupanayanam ceremony. The sacredfunction ofupanayanam is an important milestone in the life of the student, namely, it initiates him towards the study of thevedas. According to thevedasandsmr. tis, the prescribed age ofupanayanam for brāhmins is seven. Theage, however, should not exceed sixteen in any case.

Gāyatr̄ı mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance invedicdharma. It is the most hallowedmantra of thevedas and is considered themother of allmantras. The performance ofgāyatr̄ı japam, which is an in-tegral part ofsandhyāvandanam, protects the individuals from the maleficeffects of sins and expiation. It is a prayer to the sun god to alleviate one fromall human sins and to bestow knowledge, health and longevity. According toParāśara, one who performsgāyatr̄ı japam with devotion becomes pureand gets liberated. A person who does not recite thegāyatr̄ı mantram can-not be considered to be abrāhmin, even if he has read thevedas, śāstrasandpurān. as. Amongst the many definitions ofgāyatr̄ı, one of it is

    ga;a;ya;ntMa a;a;ya;tea I+.a;ta ga;a;ya:a;agāyantam. trāyate iti gāyatr̄ı

which means that it is one which protects the person who chants or recites it.

Lord vis. n. u is also calledyajñah. , as theyajñas, the sacrificial rites, areall dedicated to Him. The wordupav̄ıtam means that which surrounds. Con-sequently, the wordyajñopav̄ıtam is a thread that surrounds Lordvis. n. u,the in-dweller orantaryāmi. In light of this, theyajñopav̄ıtam can beviewed as the thread that goes round the heart-region (whichis the seat ofan-taryāmi) over the left shoulder down to the navel and back to the left shouldervia the back. Theyajñopav̄ıtam comprises of three strands knotted together. This symbolizes the conjunction of the three fundamental entities, namely, cit,(the sentient being- individual soul)acit (the non-sentient matter- body) andı̄śvara (the in-dweller) in an inseparable combination. The ends ofthe knotof theyajñopav̄ıtam should point upwards to signify the final goal in view, namely, ascent to the Lotus Feet of Lordvis. n. u in His transcendental abode. In addition, it should be close to the heart, the seat ofantaryāmi.

We are happy to release this book on the occasion of theupanayanamof ours sons Chi. Mukund Kidambi and Chi. Sriram Kidambi on June 18, 2007in the auspicious presence of His HolinessŚr̄ı Raṅgapriyā Mahādeśikansvāmi. In this book, we have provided a fairly detailed procedure for perform-ing yajurveda kālatraya sandhyāvandanam, that is, thesandhyāvan-danam during three times of the day. It is certainly not a substitute for learn-ing the sandhyāvandanam under anācarya or a qualified teacher. Theintention of this book is to serve more as a memorabilia than aguide, althoughone could benefit from the procedures pertaining tosandhyāvandanam per-formed during the three times of the day andmantrās presented here withproper accents.
