YAKIMA BEARS TRIVIA
The boys of summer are back.
For the last 20 years, the Yakima Bears have filled the long and often hot summer days with the sounds of baseball.
Yakima opens its 21st season tonight against the Boise Hawks at Yakima County Stadium.
This is a look at those two decades of teams, players and moments in the 20 years since the Salem Dodgers moved to the Yakima Valley and set up shop at Parker Field.
The modern-day Bears joined an illustrious history that was the Northwest League in Yakima.
The original Bears, who followed several different pro franchises in Yakima Pippins, Stars, Indians were a charter member of the NWL and one of the leagues best.
Under the guide of Hub Kittle, who was the pitching
coach with the St. Louis Cardinals when they won the World Series in 1982, the Bears won championships in 1956, 58 and 59.
Buddy Hicks would lead them to titles in 1960 and 1963, before Kittle returned to the bench for the 1964 season and the teams sixth championship.
Because of an affiliation with the Atlanta Braves, Yakimas team was renamed the Braves in 1966. The next year they were gone.
Twenty-four years later, Yakima got pro ball back.
Heres a look at the 20 years since.
