Take it easy.It sounds so simple, so why is it sometimes so hard? Our jobs, families, friends, cell phones and computers allvie for our attention, and fun and relaxation get pushed to the bottom of our to-do lists. And when we do findtime to get away, we often find ourselves in places that are neither affordable nor approachable.
But here in the Yakima Valley, taking it easy is, well, easy. With more than 100 wineries, our sun-soaked Valleyis best known as one of the largest wine-producing regions in the country, but our free-spirited communityis also renowned for its friendly merchants, bounty of agricultural crops, rich cultural heritage, affordableattractions and lodgings, and laid-back approach to life.
Youll find diversity in every aspect of your visit, from the rich, cultural heritage of the Yakama Nation andthe regions Hispanic community to the myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities, such as fly-fishing,boating, camping and hiking. When it comes to dining, choose from fine restaurants, casual cafs orauthentic roadside taquerias.
At just two to three leisurely hours from Seattle, Spokane or Portland, getting to the Yakima Valley is easy. And with so many wines, fruits and vegetables to sample, tasting the Yakima Valley is easy too. The hotels areaffordable and many local attractions are free or inexpensive, so making room in your budget is also a snap.
When it comes right down to it, theres nothing hard about visiting the Yakima Valley -- except maybe leaving!

The best way to sample a variety of wines at yourfavorite wine bar or restaurant is to order a flight. Andthe best way to soak up a balanced blend of viticulturalexperiences is to escape to the Yakima Valley. In thissunny wine country region, youll find friendly tastingrooms, premium boutique wineries, picturesque vineyardand charming inns.
The Yakima Valley Appellation is the States oldest andlargest wine-growing region, cultivating more than 12,000acres of grapes and producing more than one-third of all
Washington wine. More than 100 wineries craft over 30different types of wine, from Syrah to Sauvignon Blanc toMerlot to Mourvdre.
But the regions impact and influence on the wine industryhasnt gone to its head. The Yakima Valley remains one ofthe friendliest, most affordable and laid-back destinationsin the State. Discovering the Valley is a little like finding afour-star restaurant where jeans and flip-flops are not justtolerated, but encouraged!
And the Valleys approachability is outshined only by the
diversity of its wine-themed delights. Choose a walkingtour of tasting rooms in downtown Yakima, a leisurely drivfrom vineyard to pretty vineyard in and around Wapato anZillah, a stroll through urbane tasting rooms in Prosser orrest easy overnight in a romantic wine-country inn.

In the Rattlesnake Hills that stretch from Wapato toZillah are numerous lovely vineyards where you cansample wines right at the source. Your host is often thewinemaker or a family member, who is happy to discussthe distinctions between each grape, harvest or bottling.Pick half a dozen vineyards to visit, pack a picnic andspend a leisurely day among the grapes.
The community of Prosser offers a different, thoughno less satisfying, wine tasting experience. More than25 contemporary tasting rooms allow you to enjoy awhirlwind wine tour in just a few hours -- and most ofthem are free. Youll find every varietal under the sun, andsomething else youre sure to appreciate -- a completelack of pretension.
Every day is a good day to visit Yakima Valley winecountry, but the excursion is even more enchantingduring one of the regions wine-themed celebrations. At Red Wine & Chocolate over Presidents Day weekend(and close to Valentines Day), chocolate lovers and winedevotees come together to enjoy pairings of creamyconfections and rich red wines. At Spring Barrel Tasting, which takes place the last full weekend in April, youllhave the opportunity to sample wine straight from thebarrel and stake a claim to the finished product before it seven bottled. During Thanksgiving in Wine Country, theregions wineries invite enthusiasts to celebrate the season
of plenty, which is especially fitting in this bountifulagricultural Valley.
For the adventurous taster, try a wine tour by horseback,a delightful way to meander between tasting rooms.Soak up the sun and aromas of the farmland as you rideto the next wining hole. Your steed will give you anup-close and personal tour of the vineyards and orchards. To continue with your Wild West experience, bunk downin a luxury teepee for the night on a working farm withextraordinary views of the Yakima Valley landscape.

Our rich history..Rattlesnake Hills is located in the northernmost portion of the Yakima ValleyAVA, 17 miles southeast of Yakima, Washington. With a dry, sunny climate
of warm summer days and cool nights, this area is a proven winner forwine grapes. The soils developed from ancient ice and rock flows combiningwith volcanic sediments create a superior growing region for our vineyards.Rattlesnake Hills are aptly named for the rolling, dry hills flowing from west toeast. The area features picturesque views of the snow-capped Eastern CascadeMountains and tiny hamlets settled in the mid-1850s. Melting snow divertedinto irrigation canals, provides water for not only wine grapes but all the fruitsand vegetables that find their way to dining tables all over the world. Vineyardsbegan popping up in the mid-1960s and wineries in the mid-1970s. This trendis still occurring today. Our vineyards grow top-notch grapes, producing winesgarnering not only local and national acclaim but also international attention.

YAKIMA VALLEY
AractionWhen you visit the Yakima Valley, there are a few thingsyou expect to find. Award-winning wines, for instance, anfarm-fresh fruits and vegetables. Exhilarating recreationalopportunities and museums devoted to the regions culturinfluences. But its what you might not expect that makesthe Yakima Valley such a surprisingly satisfying destination
In a nutshell, we just dont take ourselves too seriously. Were proud of what we produce, but we dont let it goto our heads. In fact, were just as excited about some ofour more curious attractions -- like the dinosaur statues in
Granger or the Teapot Dome in Zillah -- as we are of ourspectacular wineries and great farms.
We love it when visitors sing our praises, but were justas delighted when we can make them laugh. The YakimaValley invites visitors to dip their toes into a little nostalgiaa little Americana and a whole lot of fun. It is home tosome captivating attractions you wont find anywhere elsein the State.
The Central Washington State FairTheres nothing more American than a fair. Nowhere else
can you fill up on fried foods, great games, live music andexciting rides. Here in the Yakima Valley, we have a prettydarn good one that takes place in late September at StateFair Park, on Fair Avenue just off I-82.
The States official fair since the late 1890s, the CentralWashington State Fair has retained all of the charm of thosearly expositions. Many of its participants and exhibitorslive, farm and raise their animals right here in the YakimaValley. It is one of the best annual displays of agricultureanywhere in the State.
Come fo the wine and the freshproduce, but expect the unexpected.

The Dinosaurs of GrangerThe tiny town of Granger has a gigantic theme: Wherethe dinosaurs roam. The slogan was reportedly inspiredby the discovery in 1958 of mastodon bones at a mineonce owned by the Granger Clay Co. (Never mind thatmastodons are not technically dinosaurs.) The town isdotted with statues of dinosaurs, which make a delightfuldetour along State Route 22.
The Murals of ToppenishThis historic community in the Yakima Valley has an OldWest feel, Native American traditions and an easily apparentartistic streak that quite literally had local artists climbingthe walls. The City of Murals boasts more than 70 life-sizepaintings that depict farming, aviation, railroading, rodeos andnumerous other historical landscapes.
Wander through town on your own or enjoy the muralsfrom a mule-powered wagon tour. Placards postednear each scene offer historical details. Mural in a Day,which takes place the first Saturday in June, artists armthemselves with paint brushes and participate in thecreation of a huge communal mural.
The Teapot Dome of ZillahThe Teapot Dome was built in 1922, when a briberyscandal over Wyoming oil fields rocked President Warren G.Hardings administration. It used to be a service station, and
is now one of those quintessential roadside attractions thatyou dont really have to get, but you definitely have tophotograph. The newly renovated teapot is now serving asZillahs visitor center in the center of town.
The Trolleys of Downtown YakimaItll take you more than half an hour to travel two blocksand back, but your conductor will know more about trolleycars and Yakimas history than anyone else youll meetduring your stay. The ride is a glimpse into the past, butthe refurbished streetcars feature ingenious seats that
ensure youre always facing forward.

Step back in time and view the vintage artifacts and displays that were
once the epicenter of an era passed. The Toppenish railroad depot
was built by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1911 and served as a
transportation center for the community for 50 years. With the decline
of railroad transportation, the depot was boarded up in the 1980s but a
group of rail enthusiasts formed an association and volunteered many
hours to reopen the depot as a museum in the early 90s. Open May 1 -
Oct. 15, Tues. - Sun. 10am - 4pm. See website for special events.

As you drift, drive or bicycle by, you can see the basalt layersin valley walls that once formed part of one of the largestlava fields in the world, said to have covered more than200,000 square miles in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Rock ClimbingThe Yakima Valley is home to the Tieton River area, whichis accessible from White Pass (Hwy 12) and offers excellenttraditional and sport climbing for all skill levels.
