Yale Athletics Mission — NEW!The mission of Yale varsity athletics is to attract outstanding student athletes, who aspire to undertake the challenge of a high-level education while proudly representing Yale University in the pursuit of championships. Through exceptional facilities and coaches, Yale Athletics ensures that our students learn the important values of leadership, integrity, discipline and teamwork. The aspiration is that in the course of preparation and competition, students enter a co-curricular laboratory for learning that will fit them to lead in all of their future endeavors.

Dear Alumni & Friends of Yale Athletics,

It is hard to believe that another year of championships, athletic achievements, and academic excellence has come and gone. Even after twenty years at the helm of this great department, I never cease to be amazed by the achievements of our student-athletes, coaches, and our alumni! If I had to find one word to describe 2013-14, it would be —leadership.

Our volleyball team, under the guidance of Head Coach Erin Appleman brought home their fourth Ivy Championship in a row. The seniors on that team, leaders since their arrival on campus, did not know how to lose! Their captain, Kendall Polan, was honored with her third Ivy Player of the Year recognition—an unparalleled achievement in the sport (see story, page 1). Our sailing team, coached by McNay Family Director of Sailing, Zach Leonard ’89, dominated collegiate sailing (see story, page 1). They secured not only this year’s Coed and Team Race Nationals, but also the Fowle Trophy, for the greatest number of points across all college sailing competitions. To top it all, Graham Landy ’15 was honored as College Sailor of the Year. These teams set the bar high and motivated all of us around them to strive for greatness!

The achievements on behalf of Yale Athletics did not end with our student-athletes and coaches. This year a group of Yale Lacrosse alumni took up the mantle of endowing their program. They set an ambitious goal of $12.5 million and are well on their way, already securing $7.55 million in pledges. This leadership was what we had in mind when we established the Plan for Athletic Excellence last year–a campaign to fully endow our varsity athletic program. When we made that announcement, our goal was $170 million. Today, we are proud to report that goal has been cut to $158

million. We have a long way to go, but I am confident other programs will follow the lead of Yale Lacrosse to ensure the long-term fiscal success of their favorite team. You can read more about the Lacrosse endowment on page 8 and the Plan for Athletic Excellence on 18.

These impressive displays of leadership are what Yale Athletics is all about. We ensure that the competitive experience prepares our graduates to succeed after they leave New Haven. As alumni and friends, you foster that spirit everyday. As a result, we have altered our mission statement to focus more on the leadership qualities we strive to encourage at Ray Tompkins House.

Our work is not done. I will continue to ask for your help—as volunteers in our associations, as mentors to our student-athletes, and as donors to our programs. All of these displays of leadership are vital to our goal of winning championships.

Thank you for your support in 2013-14. I look forward to seeing what we can do in 2014-15!

Best regards,

Tom Beckett Director of Athletics

Top Sports Stories of 2013-14Yale Sailing First in the NationHonored with a second consecutive Leonard M. Fowle trophy this spring, the Yale Sailing teams (Women and Co-ed) sit firmly at the top of U.S. collegiate sailing. This Intercollegiate Sailing Association prize, based on performance in six national races throughout the year and awarded to the best college sailing program in the country, is the culmination of a year of individual highlights.

A strong Fall 2013 campaign was capped by Mitchell Kiss placing fourth at the Men’s ICSA Singlehanded National Championship in icy November winds in Newport, RI and the team of Chris Segerblom, Max Nickbarg, Graham Landy, and Marly Isler sailing to fourth place in balmy St. Petersburg, FL at the ICSA Match Racing National Championships.

Yale sailed the Spring 2014 season so successfully that throughout they were ranked either first or second nationally, humbling all their Ivy League opponents by winning the Mosbacher and Knapp trophies in April. Post-season championship racing brought a new round of successes. The Women’s Team finished second at the

Sperry Top-Sider College Women’s Sailing National Championship at Annapolis, MD in late May. Then in early June the Coed Team dominated the APS Team Race National Championship at St Mary’s City, MD with a 22-3 record. In the following days at St. Mary’s, in fleet racing, the Coed Team qualified for Nationals by winning the Western Semifinals and, for the first time in a quarter century, went on to capture the Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship by an astonishing 87 points, triumphing in both A and B divisions.

Graham Landy, Coed Team captain, was voted ICSA College Sailor of the Year and, Landy, Chris Segerblom, and Ian Barrows were named to the ICSA Coed All-American Team. Marlena Fauer and Morgan Kiss earned ICSA Women’s All-American status. And, Women’s Team captain Katherine Gaumond, Eugenia Custo Grieg, Amanda Salvesen, and Charlotte Belling were named to the ICSA Crew All-American roster.

It was a superlative year for Yale Sailing.

Kendall Polan, Volleyball All-StarKendall Polan graduated in May 2014 as the most honored member of the Yale Volleyball Team in the history of the program. For four years, she was a vital physical and mental presence on the court. In the words of Coach Erin Appleman, “Her leadership and will to win has left an indelible mark on this program. She truly is one in a million.”

Kendall was captain of the 2013 squad that won Yale’s fourth straight Ivy League championship. In the process, she was named the first-ever three-time Ivy League Player of the Year. Over Kendall’s Yale career the Volleyball Team tallied a remarkable Ivy League win/loss record of 51-5, going undefeated in 2012.

Kendall ventured to New Haven from Cardiff, CA in 2010, finishing her freshman season as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, named to the first of four

First Team All-Ivy designations. The following three seasons she collected one award after another while sharing laughs and interminable bus rides with a talented group of scholar-athletes. By senior year, she ascended to volleyball video stardom in a series of episodes of ‘Kickin It with Kendall’ seen on the volleyball website. She reflected, “My best friends have been members of the Yale Volleyball Team and I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience they provided over the last four years.”

While still in the glow of a four-peat Ivy championship, Polan celebrated the close of her Yale career with the news that she’d been named recipient of the Nellie Pratt Award, highest honor given to a woman athlete at Yale.

Boola, Boola!

Sports & Recreation UpdateThe purpose of club and recreational sports at Yale is to fill the need for structured sport activities outside traditional Ivy League competition. Training and competing are complemented by student involvement in fundraising, organization, administration, budgeting, scheduling, and leadership. In 2013-2014 over forty teams competed under the banner of club and recreational sports.

Intramurals Highlights Davenport College wrested the 2014 Tyng

Cup from last year’s winner, 2nd place Trumbull College, with late Spring success. At the end of Fall Season perennial contender Jonathan Edwards (478) held the lead over 2nd place Davenport (422) and and 3rd place Trumbull (387). While Davenport (288) was humbled by 1st and 2nd place Branford (340) and Trumbull (330) during the Winter season, Jonathan Edwards (220) stumbled to 8th place. Davenport (289) left no doubt by dominating the Spring season, trimming 2nd place Branford (237) by over fifty points push-ing them to 3rd place overall. Competition was more even in 2013-14 than ever as the relatively low winning score of 999 indicates. Even the 11th and 12th ranked colleges broke 300 points to best a low score under 200 last year. Tyng pride lives.

Community InvolvementThomas W. Ford ’42 Community Outreach Programs

Established in 1996, the Ford Outreach Program is run by the Student-Athlete Community Outreach Committee (COC). The mission of the Ford Outreach Program is:

• To bring Yale Athletics and Yale student-athletes into the New Haven community

• To provide Yale student-athletes with the opportunity to become involved in community programs

• To provide opportunities for community groups, organizations, and schools to attend Yale athletic events and utilize Yale’s athletic facilities and fields

• To continue to develop new creative programs that benefit the New Haven community

Community Outreach Programs BULLDOGBUDDIES Student-athletes visit a lo-

cal elementary school weekly to help kids with homework and to play sports in the gym.

BULLDOGPAWS (Pediatrics Alliance with Student-Athletes) pairs teams with pediat-ric patients. Teams “adopt” a child as a new teammate and develop a bond of mutual sup-port and friendship between child and team.

HOLIDAYGIFT-GIVINGINITIATIVE Varsity teams sponsor families who can not afford holiday presents and buy kids items on their wish lists.

NEWHAVENTENNISOUTREACH(NHTO) Members of the Yale Varsity Tennis teams mentor low-income students in grades 3-12 year-round, providing tennis instruction and one-on-one academic support.

SPECIALOLYMPICSUNIFIEDSPORTS pairs kids with disabilities with “partners” on sports teams. Events include on-campus clinics, honoring Unified teams as guests at Yale events, helping at off-campus prac-tices, and volunteering at tournaments

SQUASHHAVEN A year-round, after-school program for New Haven youth to promote academic, athletic, and personal growth through a program of squash instruction and community service.

YALECOMMUNITYROWING Yale Student-Athletes and coaches teach local youth the sport of Crew at Yale’s Gilder Boathouse.

YALESWIMNEWHAVEN Members of the Men’s and Women’s swim teams teach kids how to swim every Saturday in the Spring.

YOUTHDAYS Hundreds of youth come to Yale Athletic facilities to watch varsity teams compete as part of an entire day of student-athlete clinics, barbeques, face painting, and more. Fall Youth Day at the Yale Bowl continues to be the most well-attended out-reach event of the year.

Yale Lacrosse Works to Endow Entire Program! In an incredible show of leadership, a group of Yale Lacrosse alumni has united to endow their programs. Donors have raised $7.95 million against a goal of $12.5 million to endow Yale Lacrosse. Joe Tsai ‘86 and his wife Clara Wu made the lead gift for the endowment and are joined by supporters Vincent J. ’98 and Clara Gillespie ’01 Ferraro, Ed and Susan R. ’87 Forst, Christine C. and Jason W. ’87 Reese, Barbara E. and Jonathan P. ’90 Reese, Brian M. ’85, ’92 J.D. and Jeannette S. Reilly, Caroline and David ’92 Ryan, David I. ’95 and Rebecca Vitas ’00 MBA Schamis,

David W. Schwartz ’87, and Timothy A. Steinert ’82, as well as several anonymous donors.

This programmatic endowment goes a long way to ensuring that both Yale Lacrosse programs are able to recruit and retain top talent, have access to state of the art facilities and equipment, and have the flexible programmatic funds to meet and respond to needs as they arise. In short, it allows Yale Lacrosse to remain among the best programs in the Ivy League and in the country.

Crews Endow Coaching PositionsIn 2013-14, the women’s and heavyweight crew alumni groups joined their lightweight counterparts by endowing head coaching positions. Three coaching endowments in two years – extraordinary news!

The women’s coaching position will now be known as The Friends of Yale Women’s Crew Head Coach. What began as a $400,000 goal in honor of the program’s 40th anniversary, recognized during a weekend celebration in April, skyrocketed to over $1.5 million raised in just over two years. This endeavor was a true team effort of over 100 alumnae and friends of Yale Women’s Crew.

The heavyweight position was also an incredible group effort. The majority of the $1.5 million goal came from the generosity of the estate of Craig W. Johnson ’68, for whom the position will be named. Loyal alumni stepped up to fill the gap required to meet the naming threshold.

The expendable income from these funds will be used to support the salary and other directly related benefits of the Head Coaches of Yale Crew, and will reduce the overall operational expenses of the program that need to be funded through annual giving.

Johnson Field Gets New TurfIn October 2012, we were thrilled to hear AD Tom Beckett announce to a room-full of field hockey players, their families, the coaching staff, and scores of field hockey alumnae that Yale would install a new, state-of-the-art turf at Johnson Field in time for the 2013 season. While the 11-year-old green turf had seen many glorious contests, its time had come. So when we arrived on the Friday of our September 2013 alumnae weekend and were invited by Caroline Ruth Thompson ‘02 Head Coach of Field Hockey Pam Stuper to come to the team’s last practice before the Yale-Harvard game, we raced out of our cars to be the first to experience the new turf. And what a joy it was to see the team sending the ball back and forth on the sparkling, royal blue turf—a fitting addition to the sport we have been so proud to represent since its establishment as the first varsity women’s sport at Yale in 1972.

– Lorraine Pratte Lewis ’78 and Jan Colarusso Seeley ’829

Facilities UpdateNew Turf for Clint Frank FieldClint Frank Field, the home of JV Football and Yale Track & Field, received a new artificial field turf surface this year thanks to the generosity of leadership donors Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer P’14. Their son John was an All-Ivy player for the football team. The field, which was previously natural grass, now allows for safer practices, greater usage in inclement weather, and is a strong tool for recruiting. In addition, it allows for practice flexibility with other spring sports.

Yale Natatorium ProjectThe Yale Corporation and Officers, working in conjunction with the Yale Swimming & Diving Association Steering Committee, announced plans to move forward with fundraising to renovate the pool at Payne Whitney Gym. While plans are still being finalized, the facility will include a

50-meter body of water, separate diving well and internal connection to the 50 meter pool on the 3rd floor of PWG. This exciting new facility will allow Yale to compete with the best programs in the Ivy League and beyond and will also serve the entire Yale community.

2013 Blue Leadership BallThe Yale Athletic Department awarded the George H. W. Bush ’48 Lifetime of Leadership Award to five Yale alumni at the Blue Leadership Ball in New Haven the evening before the 2013 Yale/Harvard football game. The biennial gala honors Yale graduates for important contributions in his/her field following the example of the 41st President of the United States. Over 500 guests attended the flagship event that included a signature cocktail hour, a benefit auction, and a dessert cocktail reception. The highlight of the evening was a video presentation honoring the life and accomplishments of each award winner in their own words and through the eyes of their closest supporters.

Bruce Alexander ’65 rowed Yale varsity lightweight crew. Since 1995 he has served

Yale as Vice President and Director of New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development. Before returning to Yale he spent 26 years with the Rouse Company in Maryland.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn ’56 rowed on the 1956 Yale varsity crew that won the Olympic gold medal. A leading expert on heart disease, he has served the medical profession from combat surgeon to President of Staff and Member of the Board of Governors of the Cleveland Clinic to author of over 150 publications.

Jerome Kenney ’63 played varsity football and lacrosse at Yale. He helped build Merrill Lynch into the largest fixed income and equities firm and premier investment-banking underwriter in the world as he

rose to Vice Chairman. Since 2008 he has acted as senior adviser to BlackRock.

Rear Admiral Richard Lyon ’45 was captain of the 1943 & 1944 Yale swim teams, setting a world record in 1943 with his teammates in the 400-yard freestyle relay and capturing

the 1944 NCAA team championship. He served 41 years in the Navy stationed around the world during his much-decorated career. In retirement, he was elected Mayor of Oceanside, CA and was a founder and Board President of Children’s Hospital Orange County.

Patricia Melton ’83 was a track team standout and 1982 All-American. She is still Yale’s record-holder in the 400 meter hurdles. Melton is Executive Director of New Haven Promise, a scholarship program founded by the City of New Haven, Yale, and the

Community Foundation. In her decorated career in Education she has been instrumental in the creation of nine K-12 schools and the reformation of educational policy in several states.

Yale Sport Associations EveryteamatYaleissupportedbyaSportAssociation. The Sport Associations are represented by a board of alumni that provide up-to-date information about our programs, mentor our student athletes, and to help sustain the proud and storied tradition of Athletics at Yale. In addition to raising money, the Associations enhance the experience

of current Yale players and establish a strong connection between Yale Athletics and the greater Yale community through such initiatives as career networking and job placement, and special events (including receptions, golf outings, and alumni/ae games).

Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors Excellence FundThe RTA fund is a general, unrestricted annual fund that promotes excellence across all 35 varsity teams. It will be used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the athletic department

itself, will have the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. The fund will support the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics.

Supporting Yale Athletics: Annual Giving

Quick facts about the Ray Tompkins Associates Athletic Directors’ Excellence Fund

• Used at the discretion of Athletic Director to supplement the budgets of the most needy sports and for general Athletics needs, including:

• Varsity letter participation awards

• End of year student-athlete recognition events

• Captains Council leadership training sessions

• Coaches professional development

• Varsity athlete practice sweats

• Special one-time program costs associated with taking a team to the next level

• All donations are unrestricted and go towards the yearly donations raised

The Plan for Athletic Excellence The Ivy League model for athletics is the most expensive in the nation. Only 13 teams are required to be recognized at the Division I level and every school in the Ivy League hosts more than 30. In addition, without the revenue provided by television contracts, bowl games, and high profile endorsements the amount being invested by the Universities in the Ivy League are significantly more than schools in more high profile conferences.

Yale is committed to creating a world-class experience for 805 student-athletes on 35 varsity teams. This means access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, an unparalleled coaching faculty, and ability to test their skills against top collegiate competition in their sport.

As the landscape of Ivy League athletics becomes increasingly competitive, the financial support from the alumni and friends of Yale Athletics is paramount to achieving that mission.

The economic downturn has impacted budgets throughout the country and clearly here at Yale. To address the needs of today, along with planning for tomorrow, we created the Plan for Athletic Excellence—a five-year strategic plan to grow our endowments while maximizing annual-use funds for our teams.

Supporting Yale Athletics: Endowment GivingFullyendowingourathleticprogramswouldprovideuswiththeprotectiontothriveregardlessoftheeconomicclimate.

New programmatic and coaching endowments help to sustain success in perpetuity for our athletic programs. There are unlimited opportunities for donors to leave a lasting and meaningful legacy for their favorite Yale team(s). Establishing a new endowment fund or adding to an existing endowment, allows you to ensure that our coaches and student-athletes have a consistent support base well into the future.

Head Coaching Endowments

• A named coaching endowment can be established with a gift of $1.5 million

• Funds from coaching endow-ments are used to recruit and retain the strongest coaching fac-ulty in the Ivy League.

• Coaching endowments are rec-ognized any time that a coach’s names is used in the media, web-sites, stationery, and on personal email signature

• Coaching endowments can be named in honor of a family, coach, team, or class – the pos-sibilities are endless

• Head Coaching endowments are recognized on individual plaques in the main lobby of Ray Tompkins House

Unrestricted Endowments Yale Athletics also benefits from

two unrestricted endowments that promote excellence across all 35 varsity teams. The spendable yield from these funds are used at the discretion of the Athletic Director to ensure all sports, and the ath-letic department itself, will have the resources necessary to operate at the highest levels. These funds will support the most urgent of needs within Yale Athletics.

Yale Athletics Excellence Endowments: Investing in Our FutureAs Yale Athletics continues its quest to endow our entire varsity sports operation, we were helped by the generosity of Meghan McMahon ’87 and David Swensen ‘76 M.A., ‘78 M. Phil., ‘80 Ph.D who created six excellence endowments for our teams. These programmatic funds in the sports of women’s basketball, football, golf, hockey, softball and tennis were created with the long-term goal of increasing the amount of support to our teams through endowment yield and reducing the amount of pressure on annual fundraising.

Further, it is the hope of our leadership donors that other alumni and friends of Yale Athletics will consider making gifts to add to the principal of these funds so they will continue to grow and cover even more of our operating budgets. If you are interested in supporting one of the Yale Athletics Excellence Endowments or would like to create your own named Excellence Endowment, please contact Alison Cole ’99, Director of Athletic Development at 203-432-3344.

Planned GivingFor many friends of Yale, a bequest can be a way to make a profound and lasting impact. A bequest made now can promote the future of Yale Athletics with little or no effect on your current resources. Bequests can be in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other property. You can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for loved ones.
