craft [noun]

_ an activity involving skill in making things by hand.

new orleans building arts institute is an artisanal community and a research facility dedicated to the study of the living traditions of building arts - lath and plaster. new orleans being a historical city has many old traditional houses with a lot of characteristics. most of these houses were built with the tradition building craftmanship - lath and plaster. it is often cheaper to repair than rebuild a drywall. therefore, there is demand for repairing existing interior walls built with lath and plaster. the institute’s mission is to ensure that the publicunderstanding and appreciation of the building trades as an art form continues to evolve over time. in order to do so, there is a plaster shop which is equipped with practice walls, where visitors/students learn how to prepare and mix plaster and how to plaster a wall. the placement of program was inspired by the unique courtyard condition in new orleans where pockets of spaces are activated for different activities. the programs are divided into three sections - residency, education and exhibition. these three buildings are connected with the main circulation path which is an extension of the main circulation of the surrounding cemetry. secondary circulation is these corridors that connect different programs in the building. these circulations outline and activate the courtyard spaces and transport visitors from interior to exterior.

in・sti・tute [noun]_ a society or organization having a particular object or common factor, especially a scientific, educational, or

social one.

the mardi gras indian institute is a building dedicated to the mardi gras indians, their culture and their battling tradition. the building is a complex for education, community and exhibtion. the mardi gras indian society has always been very secretive. most members are only seen on st. joesph’s night or/and super sunday. nights like these, they dress up and parade in suits influenced by native american. during the march, the indians dance and sing traditional songs particular to their gang. when two tribes come across each other, they either pass by or meet for a symbolic fight. each tribe lines up and the “big chiefs” taunt each other about their suits and their tribes. the drum beats of the two tribes intertwine, and the face-off is complete. both tribes continue on their way. the mardi gras indian institute celebrates this unique tradition by taking part in the “battles”. programs such as studios are avaliable for dance practice. on st. joesph’s night or/and super sunday, the central courtyard becomes the battle ground - two tribes enter the battle ground from the dance studios on two sides of the buidling after practice, or from the streets and have a face-off, while audience observes the battle from the building or from the street.

cot ・ tage [noun]_ a small simple house, typically one near a lake or beach._ a dwelling forming part of a farm establishment, used by a worker.

the sexton cottage also is an exhibition space for the lafayette cemetery no 1 on prytania street and sixth street in new orleans, la. the floor plans recreate the spitial quality one experiences when they come to a traditional new orleans above-ground cemetery. tombs built with different shapes, heights and materials shift, push and pull from each other and create these cracks where some are accessbile and some are not. there are three rooms on the first floor which have a similar dimension of a tomb, shift from each other and create cracks just like the tombs in the cemetry do. some cracks are large enough for visitor to pass through and thus become the circulation of the structure. where the cracks are small, they become spaces where visitor can peek through but cannot pass through. the building is primarily built with cmu blocks, with wood panel decking; and stainless steel on the facade.

this staircase is a self-supported spiral staircase built with walnut. the idea was to create a whirling staircase that seems to be one continous piece. it begins on the second level as a handrail and starts whirling to the bottom floor - it leads visitors through the space. a few inches of space between each whirl allows light into the space within the staircase from the skylight above, which makes the space less solid and opaque. this staircase also provides sitting as the treads are widened. people can grab a book and sit on the stairs and read or just enjoy the light and shadow within the space. extra sitting is also provided next to the staircase. - a

bench built with the same material and concept.
