Principal’s News Welcome to Week 6 of Term 4 at Yanco Public School. Last week was a very busy week, with a number of fantastic activities taking place, including Kindergarten Orientation Day, the K-6 excursion to Narrandera and a visit from the Taronga Park Zoomobile. Equity Funding In 2014 Yanco Public School will receive increased equity funds through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM) based on socio economic data and Indigenous students. More details of the new funding will be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting of the P & C. An information sheet on the new funding model is attached to this week’s newsletter. Remembrance Day Today, 11 November 2013, is Remembrance Day. All students will gather to attend a Remembrance Day Ceremony and observe a minutes silence at a short ceremony before recess today. Students and staff will have the opportunity to remember the men and women of Australia who lost their lives in not only the First World War, but the wars that have followed and pay their respects. Lest we forget. Narrandera Excursion Last Thursday all students travelled to Narrandera to visit the Narrandera Wetlands, Narrandera Nature Reserve and the Narrandera Fisheries. A great day was had by all who participated, with students seeing a number of koalas during their koala count, a huge variety of birds in the wetlands and a fantastic exhibition of native fish in the fisheries aquarium. Students also enjoyed the yabby races. I would like to thank Mrs McClymont for organising the excursion and the parents who came on the excursion to assist.

Kindergarten Orientation Day Last Wednesday Kindergarten students who will be attending Yanco PS in 2014 attended a Kindergarten Orientation Day with Mrs McClymont. From all reports the day went extremely well, with all students settling in. They really enjoyed the opportunity to paint the ‘fire engines’ red during art and craft! Bush Fire Safety Last week all students were visited by representatives of the local Yanco Rural Bushfire Brigade. Students were informed

about the importance of fire safety, especially now we are in the bush fire danger season. The highlight for many students was the opportunity to look at the fire truck, hold the fire hose and spray some water. Thank you to the brigade representatives who attended.

Light Up Leeton Yanco PS will perform two items at this year’s Light Up Leeton festivities. K/1/2 will perform ’12 Aussie days of Christmas’, while Years 3-6 will perform ‘Aussie Jingle Bells’ at a community concert on Sunday, 1 December 2013. More details will be provided when organisation is completed. Taronga Zoomobile Taronga Park Zoomobile visited Yanco Public School last Friday. Students were provided with ‘hands on’ experiences, observing and touching reptiles including lizards and a python, a very cute Ring-Tailed possum, a huge stick insect and the well-trained echidna, who paraded between students. Thanks to Ryan from Taronga Zoo for a fantastic experience.

Year 5/6 Cooking On Tuesday 19 November it is planned for Year 5/6 to cook lunch for the entire school as part of their gardening program with Mrs McClymont. A note will be coming home later in the week. Plans are underway to expand the garden for 2014. Until next week Tim Allen

School Uniform A reminder to all parents and carers that school uniform items are available from the school during office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We have been greatly encouraged by the number of students wearing new hats this summer! There is student assistance funds currently available, that may be used to assist with the purchase of school uniform. Please contact Mrs Walsh or Mr Allen if you would like more information.

Sports Report

Angus Boulton - Riverina PSSA Cricket Last week school captain Angus Boulton travelled to Bathurst to compete in the NSWPSSA Boy’s Cricket Carnival as part of the Riverina team. The carnival was a great experience, losing the first game to Sydney North (the eventual NSW champions) and winning the next three. Unfortunately no players from the Riverina team were selected in the NSWPSSA team to participate in the Australian championships. PSSA Boys Cricket Inter-zone Trials for 2014 Organisers have to organise the Riverina PSSA Cricket team before the end of the year in readiness to attend the State carnival in early 2014. The Leeton/Griffith/Narrandera Inter-zone Trial will be held on Monday, 18 November 2013 at the Exies Nets, Griffith, commencing at 1:30 pm, prior to final selection trials to be held in Deniliquin on Monday, 2nd December 2013. Boys with identifiable strength in cricket and are in Year 5 and Year 4 are to be nominated only. If you wish to nominate to attend the Inter-zone trial at Griffith please contact Mr Allen at the school. Parents and carers will be required to transport their child to the trials and return. School Swimming K-6 School Swimming will again take place this year. Mrs McClymont attended training in Wagga Wagga and is now an AUSTSWIM accredited instructor. The intensive swimming program will take place on Monday to Thursday during weeks 8, 9 and 10 of Term 4. This lengthens the program to 12 sessions, allowing time to be made up in times of inclement weather. Parents and volunteers will be required to assist with the running of the program again this year.

News from the Classrooms Years 3/6: Last Friday Years 3-6 studied the history of Remembrance Day and this year’s theme ‘Commemorating Australian Forces in the Korean War’, as it is 60 years since the conflict in Korea ended. We studied the history of the Korean conflict and a number of short films produced during the war by the Australian government. We then made small wooden crosses with poppies on them as part of art and craft. K/1/2 What a busy week last week was, with Kinder Orientation, the Fire Safety talk, Fisheries/Koala Count/Wetlands excursion and

the Zoomobile. We have so much to write about! This week’s writing will be recounts about all these wonderful things we have experienced. News this week is again free choice, as most students missed out last week. In Maths, this week we are doing multiplication. We are looking at how our rote counting is helping us know our 2, 5 and 10 times tables

School Website The school website is updated regularly with the newsletter in full colour and photographs of the events at our school. Make sure you check out the new photo albums from recent events. There are some great shots!

Leeton High School Skirts The Leeton High School has asked us to notify parents/carers of Year 6 girls that will be attending Leeton HS next year, that the LHS skirts are now available for collection - $70 a skirt, from the Front Office between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

P. and C. News Working Bee Thank you to the small band of dedicated workers who attended the working bee at school yesterday, especially Chris Dunn who bought in a front end loader. The area for the chook pen was prepared, with logs removed, while the large amount of green waste was removed, with fantastic help from Nyree Dunn. Sandra Boulton did a fantastic job out the front of the school, pruning trees and groundcovers. Monthly Meeting The next meeting of the P & C will be held tomorrow, 12 November 2013 at the school library, commencing at 3.30 pm. We look forward to as many parents as possible attending, as new school funding and organisation for 2014 will be on the agenda.
