Dear Reader,

Once again, I find myself appealing for Volunteers to help with the running of the Parish Council. In July the Parish Council agreed to try and co-opt someone to the vacancy created by the resignation of Graham Holden. Since that meeting the vacancy has been advertised but no applications have been forthcoming. If you feel able to commit to a few hours each month to assist with the running of the Parish Council for the benefit of all those living in Yapton, then please consider becoming a local councillor. The application requirements are set out in the advertisement on Page 4.

May I thank all of those residents who completed and returned the “Yapton Play Park – Have your say” survey which was included in the last edition of the Yapton News and advertised on-line. We received some 133 returns which have been collated and analysed and the results of which will have been discussed at the meeting of the Parish

Council on Monday 13th September. Please see the Notes to the Council Meeting on Page 27, where I hope to be reporting that a project totalling around £110,000 has been agreed to replace the existing play area and improve the landscaping.

Just to remind you that Coles Funfair will be in Yapton from Thursday 30th September to Saturday 2nd October ending with a firework display on the Saturday night.

Keep well and safe.

Yapton News SEPTEMBER 2021 | Issue 109

You write … You WriteDear Sir,

For how much longer are doctors and dentists going to play the “covid” get out of jail free card, claiming their poor service is due to Covid-19 restrictions.

They’ve had 18 months to get systems in place to be able to see patients safely, so why are they still saying they can’t see people face-to-face, or register new patients?

Health services are failing people (like me) who weren’t registered at the time the pandemic started, as dentists won’t see new NHS patients (only existing ones). Surely that is upside-down: their primary focus

should be on helping and treating people who might not have been seen for several years rather than someone who was seen only a few months ago.

The doctors’ surgery is not a welcoming place. Admin staff are on a mission to frighten patients, ordering them around and ideally keeping everyone out of the surgery altogether.

Doctors’ surgeries and dental practices have got lazy and are failing in their duty of care to patients in need.

Vacancy for a Parish Councillor

Following the resignation of Graham Holden for personal reasons, the Parish Council has a vacancy for one Parish Councillor.

The Parish Council is looking for a suitably qualified and talented local person to fill this vacancy by co-opting a new member without the need for a local election. Do you have skills and knowledge that could help our local community? Or just an interest in village life. lf so, you may be just the type of person we need.

Please contact the Chairman (Stephen Haymes) on 01243 551475 or the Clerk of the Council (Andrew Gardiner) on 01243 859141 or by e-mail; [email protected] if you need more information or wish to discuss the co-option process.

Please see the Parish Council’s website for details on how to apply and for an Application Form which can be downloaded for completion and return to the Clerk by the closing date for receipt of applications on Wednesday 27th October 2021.

Interviews for prospective candidates are likely to be held by the full Parish Council on the 8th November 2021. Andrew Gardiner Clerk of the Council 13th Sepetmber 2021

Holiday Club 2021

Yapton Free Churchby Joanna Jeffers and Friends of the Free Church

Just a few weeks ago 160 children plus volunteers and youth helpers were congregating each morning at the Holiday Club Marquee on Yapton Village Green. The chatter of excited voices and parents congregating for coffee and cakes could be heard drifting across the village green. This was followed by a morning of craft, dance, games and joyful singing, with a lot of laughing and squeals of delight as stories were shared and Woollie the puppet and friends entertained the children. Alan the Astronaut popped in on his spaceship and the naughty word thief was back stealing the daily memory verse and at

the end of each morning the children got very excited to see which of the leaders would get thrown into the gunge pool.

Having missed out on Holiday club in 2020 we were excited to open-up, the marquee offering fun, free activities for local children and their families. We are grateful for the support received from members of our congregation, St Mary’s Church and Yapton Parish Council without whom it would not be possible to put on this annual Holiday Club.

Hugo and our team of adult and youth volunteers were not only entertaining the children each morning with bible stories, puppets and songs but many were involved in a lot of preparation and planning, ahead of the Holiday Club week as well as getting involved in all the extra events which happened throughout the week. It takes a big team effort but is definitely worth it. “It was great to be able to have holiday club again, this year. What touches me deeply, time and again, is seeing and hearing all those children sing about the love God has for them and all of us. Amazing!” (Hanneke van Driel).

Sharon and her family joined the church initially through our toddler group and then completed an Alpha course. This year she joined our amazing volunteers on registration and kids team, “As a first time helper at YFC

Holiday Club, I had an amazing time! It was great to see so many children having fun and to the see the community coming together. It was such a blessing to be able to spend time together.” (Sharon Wallace).

Newlyweds, Will and Alex Hawks volunteered for the week having just returned from their honeymoon. Will has helped at holiday club since attending as a child and it was lovely to have his wife Alex join us on team. Alex was a great addition to the craft team and a fun storyteller all the way from America. Paula and Reg (Will’s mum and dad), had supported Will and Alex through the ups and downs of planning for their wedding. Paula said “For me Holiday Club week held some personal challenges which I am pleased to say we’re overcome by seeing everyone enjoying themselves. I had fun being a “Loo Lady” …

but my highlight was the senior citizen’s tea party where I made some new friends and now have the joy of Pam joining us for church on Sundays! (Paula Hawks)

Rose Lintott and a team headed up this year’s tea party, hosting a relaxed afternoon with tea, cakes and background music. “Due to the homes being closed we had a lot less visitors, but it worked so well as we were able to have time for one to one chats. People loved the fact they were able to communicate again” (Hennie Sercombe). Rose agreed, “The afternoon went absolutely, brilliantly. Although we were sad not to have our usual guests form the local care homes we had several new seniors join us from Littlehampton, Worthing and Yapton. Everybody really enjoyed being able to get together again chat and connect”. (Rose Lintott).

The toddler group met for a teddy bears picnic on the Wednesday afternoon and the marquee was full of parents, grandparents, babies and toddlers. We connected with many new families of which some will join us as our toddler group resumes at the Old Church Building on Wednesday mornings in September. It was lovely to see parents making new friendships and enjoying a sense of being back in a place of normality. Many little ones born in lockdowns have missed the usual interaction with wider family and other children. One mum shared, “Having the toddler group to come to each week has been a lifeline. It is the highlight of our week”.

In addition to the morning holiday club, in the evenings we hosted 2 worship evenings, a football match, introduction to Alpha with wine and nibbles, prize giving, a family

breakfast and Paddington 2 on the big screen. Gerald’s shepherds hut was beside the tent, serving teas, coffees, cakes and flapjacks, with many parents staying on for a coffee and chat while the children had fun in the Marquee. Peter Edwards helped Gerald serving drinks and food throughout the week. Gerald said, “Peter was absolutely amazing, at times we had up to 30 people joining us for drinks and Peter was busy finding extra chairs to seat people. He was such a great help and part of the team.” Peter recently completed an Alpha course with Yapton Free Church and was one of the 5 people to get baptised in the marquee at the end of the week.

Gerald said “It has been great week connecting with people again. We served more tea and coffee than in any other year and at the same time we were seeing God move in amazing ways. It was a pleasure to chat and pray with a dear lady who had lost her husband 2 weeks

previously and, also with any another lady who was going through cancer treatment. People really have missed the personal interaction, so it was great that we were able to have that again.” (Gerald Sercombe)

Gerald and his team were busy serving up yummy burgers for the football night and full English baps for the family breakfast. “I think the relaxed football kick around went really well. It was so lovely to see so many locals coming along to watch. The burgers were definitely a hit with all the teams”. (Rose Lintott). Hugo van Driel the Pastor of Yapton Free Church said, “It was another fantastic fun filled year at Holiday Club. It struck me the number of people commenting how it was good to be back in a place of normality again. Seeing 25-30 young people come out and join us for football, burgers and chat was great.”

The gunge tank proved to be a continued source of fun for the children, as throughout the week many youth leaders and adult helpers were dunked in the gunge. Hugo traditionally gets gunged every year (much to the delight of all the children), and his fake doctors note saying ‘Hugo is too old!’ didn’t get him off the hook this year!!

Wednesday night included wine and nibbles and a short video with an introduction to the Alpha Course. This was a very enjoyable evening but if you weren’t there you don’t have to miss out as it’s not too late to join us at 7:30pm on 15th September at The Old Church Building for a meal and an intro to the beginning of the Alpha Course. You can book a ticket on the church homepage www.yaptonfreechurch.net or call Jo on 01243 552232.

Friday night culminated in the prize giving, with adults getting a little taste of the Holiday Club week through the action songs, stories, tug of war, gunging and a dance performed by the children. You can see the proud medal winners displaying their Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals and John receiving a special Gold Award for 10 years of service with St John’s Ambulance at Holiday Club. Thank you John : )

Saturday was an action packed, day beginning with the family breakfast and finishing with Paddington 2 on the big screen. In the morning Rose, Trish and Andrew joined Gerald preparing a delicious family breakfast followed by Gerald speaking from the book of Genesis on ‘Men, Women, Sex and Car Batteries’. Andrew said, “It was quite a challenge cooking with what for me was unfamiliar equipment,

FamilyBreakfast

but we all worked well together as a team and most of the 80 plus eggs I fried made it to the plates more or less intact! It was great to see so many people enjoying their breakfast.”

Over 200 adults and children came along to Paddington 2. “The movie night on Yapton Village green this year was an absolutely wonderful event!! It was heart-warming to see families flow on the green from all directions armed with snacks, picnic blankets. One lady even brought her garden sofa!!! Children arrived showered and in their pyjamas, cuddlies in hand. The movie was such fun and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The best atmosphere and what a sense of community!! I am definitely looking forward to the next

one.” (Veyanke Hodson). We were very thankful to Mark Rowland for providing the stage and rigging for the movie night.

Before the Marquee came down on Sunday afternoon we had our regular Sunday Service followed by baptisms in the marquee. A great finish to a fun week. To find out about other regular and special events at Yapton Free Church you can go to our church website www.yaptonfreechurch.net which has details of everything that is happening throughout the year.

As the first Flower Show for 2 years is being held on Sept 25th in the Village Hall the Society thought that residents of Yapton would find it interesting to read about the progress of the Society from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century.

The picture of the rather gruff and serious looking men was one of the earliest committees of the Society. A report in the Chichester Observer of the 1897 show said that Dahlias and Asters made up the majority of the 10 categories of exhibits and the only fruits were Apples and Plums. A man’s shirt (white and coloured) were two classes in the handicraft section as were knitted socks or stockings!! Boiled potatoes, honey and Butter were the only classes in the Cookery and

Preserves section. Perhaps the classes at that Show are an indication of what was important in the Villager’s lives at that time.

Another section which has disappeared over the last century is Livestock. Cocks, Hens, Rabbits and Birds could be shown. No doubt winning a prize in those classes was a source of pride to the exhibitor.

The earliest copy that the Society possesses is that of part of a schedule of the 27th Annual Flower Show on Wednesday Aug 29th 1923. Guessing the weight of a leg of mutton or joint of salt beef I don’t think would be very attractive to the people who attend today. There was also a sports competition at the show with a variety of races for children and

adults. A veteran’s handicap race was for men over 40. I can just imagine how men of today would react to being a ‘veteran’ at 40.

In 1936 an allotment and gardens competition were held as part of the Annual Show. The first prize for those was 15 shillings going down to 10 shillings for second and 7/6d for third. Those sums must have been very welcome just before the war. An ‘Industrial Exhibition’ also featured on the covers of the Schedules from at least 1936 to approx. 1950. This was then replaced by a ‘Home Craft Exhibition’. The majority of the schedules in this period had at least 11 shops/companies with addresses in Yapton advertising in them. That is in marked contrast to the more recent ones as there are now far fewer opportunities for employment in Yapton itself and with the advent of car ownership many people leave the village for their shopping.

The Society and its events gradually evolved over the years. In 1974 the Flower Show was held in conjunction with Yapton Carnival. A Ladies football match was a highlight of the morning with the Carnival Procession in the afternoon. In the 1950’s Fancy dress competitions were enjoyed by many.

The Society had a shop at Mapletrees Nursery on Main Road between Yapton and Barnham. This was open on Sunday morning and sadly closed in 1985

More shows were added in the 1970’s. A Rose and Sweet Pea Show and Autumn Show were advertised in 1978 and a Spring Show started in 1979. For many decades the Society has been affiliated to the RHS and all horticultural entries are judged according to their rules. For many years the British Gladiolus Society held its annual show in the marquee with our own annual show. This finished in 2004.

2 Barn dances a year were held in Spring and Autumn from 1996. This decreased to one a year and the final one was held in 2019. Numbers attending had declined significantly as people’s idea of entertainment changed.

With breaks for the 2 world wars a Centenary Flower Show was held in 2004 and the show in 2022 will be the 116th show allowing for the two years when we have not been able to hold it due to Coved 19

Currently events are as follows in any

one year:- Two plant sales, Three Village Hall Shows, Annual Show/Summer Fair on the Playing Field, Strawberry Cream Tea Fundraiser in the Village Hall, Visits to gardens of interest in the Summer and a series of Afternoon/Evening talks in Autumn/Winter.

In 2017 a big development was the addition of a Summer Fair to the Annual Show. For many years prior to this the Society had extended the Flower Show with stalls, music, activities for Children, and teas in the Village Hall. Extra

help was offered by Alice Duckworth and her husband who obtained sponsorship from many local companies. They worked with the Society to have an arena with a fun dog show, a display of dance by a local dance school and an array of stalls which covered a large section of the King George playing field. An ice cream van and opportunities to buy a burger/sausage lunch were added to make it an afternoon to remember for local families. The weather was beautiful and approx. 1000 people took advantage of the new style event. The whole event was opened by Sue Phillips the Society’s President. Hopefully 2022 will see a similar event being staged.

In 2019 Roy Phillips retired as Chairman of the Society’s committee. He had been Chairman for over 30 years and thought it was about time that someone else had a chance to have the role!! At the 2019 AGM a new chair was elected.

Shortly after you read this, the first event for two years will take place in the Village Hall. We would love to see old friends and hopefully many of the newcomers to Yapton that we know have arrived during the last few years.

Details are in the ‘Around the Villages’ section as are contact details for more information about joining the Society.

We hope you have enjoyed this short history of the Society and how it has developed over the years with many thanks to Allen Misselbrook, David Ruffle, Roy Phillips, and David Donovan

Why not come and join us, and help us to develop further in the future. You will be very welcome.

Summer Show – archive vehicles

St Mary’s ChurchBY REVD RICHARD HAYES

A fresh start! Our three churches at Clymping, Yapton and Ford have now been open for worship since Easter, and we’ve seen good attendance – sometimes as many as we can fit in under Covid guidance – and, although we’ve got used to the type of Service we’ve been restricted to, many have also missed key elements that have not been possible. Now, in September, we are relaunching our our services across the tree churches.

There will be some new things happening and some tweaking of old things.

Week’s 1 and 3 will be All Age Family Communion at Clymping, at 11.00 am and Family Service at Yapton, starting at 9.30am ( note the change of time).

Week’s 2 and 4 will be Communion Services at both churches.

Also on week’s 2 and 4 there will Sunday school in Yapton Church, running 11.00 to 12.00. Open to all children and their families, all you will need to do is book ahead. More details available from the church office. (01243 553653/ [email protected]).

A number of folk have appreciated the quiet, briefer and safer services we’ve been holding during this period. Although we won’t be able to do this on Sundays we will be maintaining this form of service at Ford on Thursdays at 10.00am. An intimate and still place of worship, it is an ideal setting for this type of reflective communion service.

Also relaunching in the Autumn will be Messy Church, based at Clymping. Fun for all the family, these events were very popular before Covid and we hope to build on their success. Watch out for the Harvest special at the end of September.

Starting a new term, a new ‘year’ and a new life with a community of church and faith as a resource is not a bad idea! If you’ve been part of our online family, or if spiritual things have been bubbling in you over the last, historic 18 months, then consider dipping your toe into the shared experience of church. Take your time and no pressure, just a genuine welcome from fellow travellers.

If you’d like more details, or just a chat about things, give Richard a call or email (01243 552962/[email protected])

Yapton Churchyard The churchyard is a lovely area of trees, shrubs, flowers and wildlife and is much admired by visitors. It is kept in order by a small team of volunteers but more help is needed with the various activities. The grass is kept tidy throughout the seasons and in addition there are various shrubs and plants that need trimming as well as ongoing weeding. The team currently operate for 2 hours each on Saturday morning and Thursday afternoon, but other days can be arranged to suit availability. If you have knowledge of tree pruning that could also be useful. So come along and use your horticultural expertise or gain more practical knowledge from the friendly team. It is also very good exercise! Anyone interested in helping to maintain this attractive space can visit the team on their workdays and find out more.

Around the VillageYapton Free Church

Report by Joanna Jeffers

Following on from the amazing fun of holiday club (which you can read all about in the Holiday Club special feature we baptized 5 of our church attendees). All the holiday club gunge was replaced with fresh warm water!! This was a special morning shared with visitors, friends and family and our last service before the holiday club marquee came down. It was incredibly touching and powerful to hear all the testimonies from those who got baptized.

For many the decision to get baptized came about through attending the Alpha course, (a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith). Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe in many different churches, and everyone’s welcome.

Is there any more to life? Yes there is. Is Alpha the only way to come to faith? No, but it will help you on your journey. It can also help you express all the things you are unsure about relating to God and why we exist. You are really welcome to join us at our next Alpha meal on Wednesday 15th September at 7:30pm. This will give you a brief introduction to the Alpha course and you can decide if it’s for you. Do email or call the office number below if you are planning on coming (as it helps us with catering).

Throughout the year, we have so many different groups, services and events that you are welcome to join.

On a Monday night (term time) 7:30pm – 9pm, we hold our girls (weekly) and boys group (fortnightly), which is for secondary school aged children who are wanting to spend time together and grow in their walk

with God. These group are led primarily by Katie and Will Cronin who are our youth pastors, along with a fantastic team who we love very much.

On a Wednesday morning (term time), we hold our popular parent and toddlers group from 10am – 12pm at the Old Church Building. All babies and preschool children with their parents/carers are very welcome to come along and enjoy a time for the little ones take part in craft or cooking activities, whilst the parents/carers get to enjoy a cuppa and a chat. The morning closes with all the children sitting together for fruit time, followed by singing action/nursery rhymes together. This is a lovely environment to connect with other parents and grandparents in the area.

On a Friday night the youth meet at the Old Church Building from 7:30pm - 9:30pm for 11- 14 year olds and 7:30pm – 10:30pm for 14+ year olds. A space where youth can come and hang out, play a variety of games & hear some good news. The ‘subs’ are just £1 each which helps to upkeep the equipment we use and do fun things throughout the year. We are a friendly bunch of youth so why not come and check us out.

The Men’s Breakfast meet on the 1st Saturday of the month when they enjoy time together over good food, great chat and they always seem to have an exciting speaker!

Currently we meet on a Sunday 10:30am at the The Lazy W Big Tent, Yapton Lane, Walberton, BN18 0AS. Visitors are always very welcome and you can find further details on Eventbrite and our church website.

All our services and details of things happening at Yapton Free Church are posted up on our website. For further details of all the activities we offer go to www.yaptonfreechurch.net or call our office on 01243 552232.

Yapton Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and Rangers by Anna Drynan 1st Yapton Guide and Ranger Leader

The 1st Yapton Rainbows enjoyed completing their camping badge in the summer and they made tents and toasted marshmallows by a fire (not a real one!) The girls learned about how to keep themselves safe when camping. Over the summer holidays many of the Rainbows have been working hard on their interest badges and were pleased to receive these when they all met together. Three Rainbows have moved up to Brownies and three new Rainbows have started this term. The girls are all busy working on their World Ocean Day badge and looking forward to lots of different sea themed activities at their Rainbow meetings.

1st Yapton Brownie Leaders were excited to welcome everyone back after the summer holidays. The term brings a varied programme of activities to help the girls gain another badge, together with cooking, art and craft sessions and games. After half term the new Brownies will be making their Brownie Promises. There will be sure to be lots of Christmas activities towards the end of the year and a Christmas Party!!

The Guides enjoyed their end of term activities at the beach and played mini golf which was a lovely sunny evening. Guide Leaders (and the Guides) have had the summer holidays off this year, and everyone has been enjoying time at home and away with their families. There have of course been a few industrious Guides

and Rangers busy working on their summer challenge badges – Too Cool for School and a Monkey Challenge badge. Bananas featured numerous times in the Monkey Challenge badge and there were some superb Banana pancakes, milkshakes and Banana bread being made. The Guides re-started the Autumn term with plans to do some of their Guiding programme activities together and work towards gaining a skills builder and their next theme award. The girls have plans for an amazing sleepover at Lodge Hill later in the term and are looking forward to planning their activities and making up an exciting programme and menu for their adventure.

The Rangers made it to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to see Hairspray and really enjoyed the show. They also had a successful Disney themed sleepover at the hut to mark the end of the term and enjoyed a scavenger hunt, some time chilling out and the highlight cooking pizzas in a cardboard box oven.

It was good to be camping out again and having some fun together. Several of the newest Rangers made their promises at the theatre, at the beach (buried in sand) and at the camp out so memories were made for all!! A team of Rangers are also taking part in the

It is a great relief to announce to you all that by the time you read this report we will have had (hopefully) our first monthly meeting since March 2020. Our secretary, Anne, has been extremely busy putting together a revised programme of speakers which I am sure you will find of interest. The first four speakers, which will take us up to the end of the year, are coming from our own members, whose talks are based on local themes.

Chichester Clued Upp game which is a city-wide detective game with lots of different teams competing against each other. This will be a new experience for the Rangers, and they are definitely looking forward to the

challenge!! There will be dressing up, team photos and a rumour there might even be prizes!!

Please do see the 1st Yapton Guide and Ranger website if you would like to catch up with our latest news and photos.

Friends of Avisford Medical Group

By Gill Henry

As we move into the Autumn, I hope you have been able to make the most of the Summer and have enjoyed some respite from work or day to day life and possibly a staycation. As we leave the longer days behind, we are moving into the winter flu season and the need, if you are eligible, to have your flu vaccination. The surgery is starting the over 65s in Sept/October look out on their website https://www.avisford.co.uk or on the surgery door for the dates.

Did you know that the Friends is the Patient Participation Group for the Avisford Medical Group and is managed by a small committee?

We have several vacancies on the committee and need your help – if you have time to spare and are interested in helping us to represent the patient view, organising free health talks for your community, attend local health forums and fundraise we need your skills. We have areas that need additional support such as accounting, publicity, website and fundraising. We are a small friendly committee and meet approximately every six weeks either face to face in a local hall or via video link.

If you would like an informal discussion or to attend a meeting to see what we do please contact us via our email address – [email protected] or by phoning Gill Henry 07884213699 (after 27th September due to family holiday). You can also view our activities on the friends website – https://avisfordfriends.co.uk . We look forward to hearing from you.

Yapton Evergreens Over 50’s by Pam Evans

We held our first meeting for over a year on June 28th. Due to social distancing it was held in Pams garden. There was a discussion about future plans and outings. As it was the start of Wimbledon we had a strawberries and cream tea. Followed by a game of bingo.

It was lovely to see everyone again after such a long time and a lot of things were arranged for the future so hopefully in September we will have a lot to look forward to.

We had an open garden bric a brac , tombola, raffle .and cream teas in aid of St. Wilfrids hospice and the team all joined in and helped. Unfortunately it rained and we only made £113 for the hospice. As we had so much left over we decided to do another one in conjunction with Macmillan on September 25th and share the money. Thank you to all who helped it was a real team effort.

Anyone wishing to know more about our friendly club please call me on 01243 868684 or 07796 657 081

Sincerely. Pam Evans. Secretary.

Yapton Village Women’s InstituteBy Maggie Brackley

Since our last Yapton News report there have been a lot of changes due to the lifting of Covid restrictions. I am sure Yapton Village WI committee and members shared the nervousness felt by many in the community when making decisions about meeting up again in large groups. As a result our first meeting was delayed until August when we were delighted to meet up in person at our Summer Picnic. Despite uncertain weather members enjoyed our host’s beautiful garden in Climping, played

outdoor games and consumed our picnics. Our Hikers and Strollers Walking Groups have been able to meet to walk companionably thus improving our physical and mental wellbeing. Members of our Craft Group also met in August for the first time since the start of lockdown. They spent the time making the most of this season’s lavender to make lavender wands by weaving ribbon between the stems.

From 21st September we are planning to get back to our usual pattern of meetings in Yapton Village Hall on the third Tuesday in the month from 10.00. and 12.00.noon. We will continue to follow Covid protocols to reassure our members and minimise risks.

A date you may wish to put in your diary – Saturday 20th November. We will be holding a Table Top Sale in the Village Hall. Our previous sale, pre Covid was very successful with a wide range of goods for sale and excellent WI standard refreshments.

If you wish to join our group and attend our September meeting please contact Maggie Brackley on 07789790706 for further details. You will be very welcome to join our friendly and active group.

Yapton Short Mat Bowling Club

Well, we have been back playing short mat bowls at the Village Hall for a couple of months now and, thankfully, a good number of our members have returned and are thoroughly enjoying playing.

Although we were all a little rusty to begin with, members have quickly raised their games and are now playing quite competitively. Not that we have arranged any friendly matches yet as the COVID situation is still very unsure and other local clubs have either not started playing again or, at least, not started to organise matches.

We have, unfortunately, lost some players for one reason or another and we have room for both new and experienced players. We have roll-up sessions on Fridays (1.45 p.m. – 4.45 p.m.) and Tuesdays (6.00 – 9.00 p.m.). If you are interested just come along on a Friday afternoon and see how you get on. If you want further information, please contact Geraldine Whitehead (Chairperson) on 01243 582711 or Pauline Hoyland (Secretary) on 01243 582574 or on [email protected].

Notes of the Council Meeting on 13th September 2021Replacement of the Play area on King George V Playing Field, Yapton – The Parish Council has agreed to:(a) The creation of a project to replace the existing play area on the King George V Playing Field with new

facilities as per the brief below;(b) The setting up of a budget of £100,000 for the replacement of the play area, with an additional £10,500

allocated to landscaping, seating and other ancillary items inside and within the immediate vicinity of the play area. The budget will cover professional fees, incidental costs, design and installation of the equipment;

(c) The use of the Section 106 monies and Community Infrastructure monies which have been allocated for this purpose from new housing developments in the Parish to be allocated to fund this project.

The brief which will be further detailed by the working group sets out the initial areas of focus are as follows: • An extension of the existing area. This will be achieved by reducing the size of the existing car park (whilst

retaining the same number of parking spaces) and potentially installing some junior equipment on the greenspace next to the MUGA.

• An inclusive area, with equipment which can be used by a range of ages and abilities including children with disabilities and learning difficulties.

• An area which is designed to reduce the likelihood and impact of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. • Improved surfacing and fencing.• No specific theme identified – most popular was ‘no preference/no theme’ followed by Pirate/Smuggler.

However, there does appear to be a small number of parishioners who would like to see a focus on the canal and the heritage of the area. This area needs to be considered further before play companies are approached.

• Equipment choices include: Zip wire, adventure trail/obstacle course, roundabout, new climbing units (junior and toddler), sensory items, basket swing, natural play features.

• A more natural environment which fits in with the village landscape better, balanced with cost of replacement surfacing/all weather surfacing.

• An element of lighting to ensure maximum use in winter months.Outline Timetable for project - It is anticipated that the playground will be constructed and opened to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on the bank holiday weekend of 2nd - 5th June 2022. This is considered appropriate to reflect the construction of the current play area in 2002 which commemorated the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.A community hub for youngsters in Yapton (this matter was discussed at the Parish Council meeting in July 2021)“I joined the council to help the young people in the area and with volunteer help I feel we can do this. Would you like to see a Yapton Youth Hub??As there are so many new houses in the area, we should try to provide for young people as well as old. I have visited a hub on a new local estate which is very successful. They meet once a week providing games etc., pool table, darts, table tennis plus refreshments. They meet once a week to start with. We would like support from parents to arrange outings for swimming, bowling etc. If we get enough helpers you would only need to help now and again, and your children would benefit immensely. I have done this sort of thing before I moved here from West London and it was very successful.I would like to hear from anyone who is interested in helping get this project off the ground. Please call me on 01243868684 all 077 96 657 081, to discuss it further and take your details.Pam Evans, Parish Councillor - Yapton Parish Council

Date of Next meeting: 8th November 2021 - Planning Committee commencing at 7pm followed by the Parish Council Meeting at 7.30pm or at the conclusion of the Planning Committee. The venue for the meetings will be

announced nearer the time. The meetings are open to the public and you are very welcome to attend.
