NNSY EARN Store: Open for BusinessBy Susan Hemmings, Code 1102 Supervisory Administrative Management Specialist

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) opened its EARN Store in Building 1500 on June 2. The EARN (Employee Awards Redemption Notch) program is designed to provide supervisors or employees with an instant means to recognize an individual or group of employees for an exceptional action or contribution to NNSY. The following are examples of accomplishments that would merit award recognitions: customer satisfaction; workplace improvements; innovative products, processes or services; and achievements in leadership, teamwork and safety.

These awards are in the form of merchandise that is distributed through the EARN Store, located on the first floor (across from the Military Personnel Office) of Bldg. 1500 in Room 119B. The store is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Examples of merchandise that is available includes, but is not limited to, a variety of jackets, shirts, hats, backpacks, lunch boxes, umbrellas, mouse pads and water bottles. Each item will be on display in the EARN store and valued between $5 and $75, in $5 increments. Both supervisors and employees can initiate an EARN award to recognize someone for a contribution. The nominator will complete the EARN Recommendation Form (see page 4). Nominators must fill in all appropriate information on the form, including a short description of achievements and the value (between $5 and $75) of the item being awarded. If the nominator wants to recognize a group of individuals, they may fill out one form and attach a list of names, pay roll shop, badge number, and job title/grade on a separate sheet of paper. If the nominator is not the employee’s supervisor, he or she will submit this form to the supervisor for concurrence. The supervisor has two working days

to concur and return the form to the nominator. The nominator can then present the form to the employee who in turn can redeem the form at the EARN store. The nominators may also select merchandise from the EARN store to present to the individual. EARN awards must be redeemed in the fiscal year they are awarded or they expire. EARN merchandise can be returned by the recipient one time within 30 days of receipt if the item has not been worn, used or is defective at no fault of the recipient. If the item is defective, it can be exchanged only for another item with similar or lesser value. Clothing items can be returned only if not worn, have not been washed, are clean and manufacturer’s hang tag has not been removed. The EARN store staff makes final determination as to whether an item can be returned or exchanged. The EARN store is operated by the Executive Support Department Administrative Office, Code 1102. The phone number for the store is 396-8159. If you need assistance, would like to make a suggestion regarding future EARN merchandise, or have questions regarding EARN awards please contact Rachel Frye at 396-9530, Dorassa Fields at 396-3672, or Joyce Evans at 396-9506.

New gate requirements for entering Norfolk Naval Shipyard Please be aware that Norfolk Naval Shipyard will soon be conducting a change in gate requirements which include “hands on” ID checks indefinitely. These new gate requirements state that all guards MUST conduct "hands-on" ID checks of the driver and a visual check of all passenger ID's. It is important to remember the driver must roll down his/her window and hand the NAVSEA badge or Com-mon Access Card (CAC) to the guard checking the ID. The badge should NOT be in a holder when handing it over to the guard. Any other occupants within the vehicle should have their NAVSEA badge or CAC ready in case it needs to be displayed and checked. Drivers should be aware that when multiple cars are being checked, within a lane, they may be asked to pull forward to the next guard and should remain alert to comply with the guard's orders so that the ID check may work in a fluid momentum. It is important to note that although currently the NAVSEA badge is allowed as entry identification it is pref-ered that employees begin to use their CAC as other changes to the entry and ID process may be implemented in the near future. Until further notice, this process will remain in place and employees are encouraged to plan their mornings accordingly when preparing for their commute to the shipyard. Again, as the traffic patterns will continue to be impacted employees are reminded to exercise all safety mea-sures in remaining alert to guard orders as well as pedestrians who may need to maneuver through traffic. If you have any questions please contact Ray Fisher at (757) 396-0351 or Mark Perry (C1120) at 396-5669.

Code 1230’s Feed-A-Sailor Today Appreciation Luncheon--Code 1230 held a Feed-A Sailor Today (FAST) cook-out at Trophy Park on June 2 for members of the code’s neighboring Mobile Security Squadrons. The cost of food is covered by Code 1230 employ-ees so MSRON members eat for free. “A lot of times we hear ‘thank you,’ but this one of those times where we’re shown it with food,” said MSRON 4 Command Master Chief Daryl Green. “We really appreciate it!” (Photo by Dave Pastoriza, Code 1170 Photographer.)
