We will be providing support by hosting 2 classes of students from the high school for the next 3-4 weeks while the damage is repaired. These classes will occupy the vacant rooms in A Block and the students will use the front playground during their break times. Updating Parent Details - Reminder Thank you to those parents who have returned their updated details to the front office. It is important that the school has current parent contact details, but also up- to-date information about occupation and education qualifications as this determines our school equity funding and socio-economic background. We encourage parents to provide the correct occupation group code which helps our school’s Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) to best reflect the profile of our student population. PSSA Sport Recently, I visited our school netball and soccer teams as they competed in the local PSSA competition. The students are delighted at the opportunity to represent Yates Avenue and consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship. The games are well supported by the parents and family members who attend. Many thanks to Miss Hoy and Mr Coon who organise these teams each week. Have a great week David MacSporran Principal Excellence, Opportunity, Success Page 1

Education Week Open Day last Tuesday, 1st August was a wonderful celebration of Public Education. We had a huge number of parents and grandparents visiting classrooms and staying for a delicious morning tea. I would like to thank Mrs Waite for her efforts in organising this fantastic day.

School Brochure & Kindergarten Orientation The school will soon be conducting a letterbox drop with a new brochure to all families in our local catchment, highlighting the great teaching and learning practices at Yates Avenue PS. An information card with details about the upcoming Kindergarten orientation will also be given to families. If you have yet to enrol your child in Kindergarten next year, please contact the office this week to assist us with school planning.

Marsden High School Sadly, Marsden High School had many classrooms destroyed in a fire last week. We will be providing support by hosting 2 classes of students from the high school for the next 3-4 weeks while the damage is repaired. These classes will occupy the vacant rooms in A Block and the students will use the front playground during their break times.

Issue 12 – Term 3, Week 4 Wednesday, 9th August 2017

Leadership Day at Carlingford Public School On Tuesday 25th July, 2017 our School Captains, Prefects and four members of our Student Representative Council attended Carlingford Public School for our second leadership skills development day. Students were split into different teams to learn how to work together with unfamiliar students. In their teams, students worked through a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) design challenge and listened to an ex Cumberland High School student talk about what being a leader means. After lunch, students worked with their school groups to work out their individual strengths and how they can use these strengths in a school setting. Narrabeen Camp There are still a number of medical forms, both online and paper, that have yet to be completed. Please have these finalised by Friday 11th August. Without these medical forms, students cannot go to camp. An equipment list is being sent home today. Please ensure you read the note as it contains all the information you will need to ensure your child is prepared for the camp. If you have any questions regarding what students can bring to camp, please speak to Miss Hoy or Mr McNeilly.

Miss Hoy - Rel. Assistant Principal BOOK WEEK

Yates Avenue will celebrate Book Week with a Book Fair and Character Parade on Wednesday, 30th August. It’ll be a busy day. The Book Fair will begin at 8:30 and run on and off all day. You are encouraged to visit with your child and purchase a book to donate to the library, the cost of which will be between $5 and $20. The Book Character Parade will begin at 9:15am. Please take some time to share your favourite books together and find a character to dress up as in the parade. The Book Parade will be hosted by our school leaders and Mrs Hopwood and Mrs Keeffe will hold some special sessions for the students in the library between 12:15pm and 1:30pm. So put your thinking caps on now … the BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS are only three weeks away.

PSSA Netball Round 9 – This round we played Parramatta North Team 1. Even though we hadn’t played for a couple of weeks due to the holidays, both the junior and senior teams tried their best, although the score was not in our favour! Round 10 – This round we played Parramatta North Team 2. Both the junior and senior teams showed enthusiasm and great sportsmanship, throughout both games. Every player is showing great improvement each week and should be proud of their efforts. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who come and support us each week.

OFFICE NEWS

Office hours: 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday Any families with change of information please inform the office. All notes will be sent home on Wednesdays with the school newsletter. If you would like to receive your newsletter by email, please inform the office. Parents/Caregivers please pick up your change from the office. PLEASE NOTE: NO PAYMENTS CAN BE MADE ON POP FOR P&C MONIES, e.g. UNIFORM SHOP, SCHOOL CANTEEN etc.

Kim Copping School Administrative Manager P&C NEWS The beginning of Term 3 marks ongoing successes for Yates Avenue P&C. Our canteen and uniform shop continue to generate good profits and, as a result, at the P&C Meeting on 26th July we were able to pass on another $1,000 towards the school's purchase of technology.

The Specials Day on Tuesday 1st August was a huge success with a massive 99 orders received. Thank you to all the parents and children who participated and the volunteers who made it happen - Larissa for cooking, Belinda for shopping, Manu, Vicky and Eli for staffing the canteen and Azita for coordinating the day.

We have a few upcoming events and we need your assistance to make them a success. Local council elections are on Saturday 9th September. As usual, the P&C will be running a sausage sizzle and cake stall on this day. We need volunteers to produce baked goods and others to assist for an hour or two on the day. Please save the date and sign up to help. Like all P&C events, all profits go directly back to the school.

There is a 5 cent challenge this term so start putting aside your unwanted shrapnel to help your child's class claim victory.

Father's Day is on September 3 and the gift stall will be held during the preceding week. See the note accompanying this newsletter for details.

The next P&C meeting will be on 23rd August at 9am in the P&C room. Please be reminded that if you would like a suggestion, question or concern discussed, and voted on, at a P&C meeting then it needs to be on the agenda BEFORE the meeting. Please email agenda items to [email protected] before 16th August. The agenda will be published on this date. As always, our small P&C team would love to see new members at our next meeting.

Ben Howell P&C President

PRESCHOOL NEWS In the lead up to Education Week, the Preschool Dolphins and Turtles contributed their ideas and suggestions for the Art Show. We talked about the many things we enjoy learning at Preschool both individually and together. We created a mind map by recording all our ideas and then decided to design and create our own “letter bugs”. “I gave my letter bug legs and wings and a happy, smiley face. It’s a butterfly bug. Mum and Nan saw it hanging up”. Isabella “My rainbow letter bug has 4 eyes and a smile and four little wings. It’s the same letter as Shreya and Shakaya and Summer”. Shiksha “My letter bug has lots of legs”. Ethan “My letter bug is yellow and has lots of legs and a big smile.” Cheryl Our “letter bugs” will continue to help us learn about letters and sounds, recognise the beginning letter of our own name, identify letters that are the same as ours and identify whose name begins with each letter. Early literacy skills are developed and strengthened when they are connected to the children’s interests and embedded in our daily learning experiences.
