Canteen News

Thank you to Alison White for her outstanding work in our school canteen over the past 5 years. Alison’s last day of working in the canteen was last Friday, where she has been a dedicated and hardworking coordinator. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, our canteen will only be open on Monday & Friday and staffed by volunteers. A revised menu will be published next week.

National Simultaneous Storytime – 24th May

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign which aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 17th successful year, it aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. A big thank you to our librarians – Mrs Keeffe and Ms Hopwood – who read ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ to all students from Preschool to Year 6.

Year 5 Interactive Science – Cumberland HS Well done to our Year 5 students who have been attending Cumberland High School on Wednesdays this term for a series of interactive science lessons. The students have been very engaged in the experiments, learning many new skills and having

lots of fun along the way. Thank you Miss Hoy and Mr McNeilly for providing Year 5 with this great learning opportunity.

Walk Safely to School Breakfast – Friday, 19th May Thank you to the many parents who worked tirelessly to prepare and serve an amazing breakfast. Many hours were spent preparing this mouth-watering feast, and it was yet another example of the wonderful community spirit on display at Yates Avenue Public School.

Have a great week

Year 6 Cake Stall Year 6 held a cake stall on Tuesday 23rd May to raise money for the Year 6 Farewell. Thank you to students in Stage 3 who brought in cakes to sell and a big thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising event.

Kathryn Hoy Rel. Assistant Principal P & C NEWS This month has seen huge changes at Yates Avenue P&C. Firstly, we had the resignation of our President, Megan Pearce, and the resignation of a long serving P&C member, Kirsten Groll. Kirsten has served the P&C for 9 years in a variety of executive positions including long periods as President. She has worked tirelessly for Yates Avenue Public School and deserves much praise and thanks for her efforts. The general meeting on 17th May saw elections of a new executive:

• President - Ben Howell • Vice-President - Barb Cardwell • Vice President, Fundraising - Azita Shahadi • Treasurer - Belinda Wilkinson • Secretary - unfilled

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Focus Area – Playing on the Concrete

Our focus area this fortnight will be teaching students the behaviour expectations for playing on the concrete, to ensure that they are safe, respectful and responsible.

When playing on the concrete, we are Learners who:

Safe Wear our hat Play the right game Walk at all times

Respectful Play fairly with others Share the space Place rubbish in the correct bin

Responsible Look after our belongings Ask permission to use the toilet Sit down to eat

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS

PSSA Netball We have only played one game this fortnight as Round 3 was cancelled, due to the weather. Round 4 we played Dundas Public School. Both the Junior and Senior teams are improving each week and are displaying great sportsmanship and encouragement. Players of the match for Round 4 are: Junior Team – Elise Brown Senior Team – Brooke Murray

ENETRTAINMENT BO OK

XOXOXOX

PRESCHOOL NEWS Preschool Dolphins and Turtles have been learning about rainbows and shadows. Our teaching and learning program has supported the children’s interest and we continue to investigate, explore, research and discover more about both. We have even noticed some new residents in our native garden –rainbow lorikeets! Special thanks to Mr. Hickey (Elijah’s dad) for helping us re-mulch and weed our much- loved native garden.

Last Wednesday, we joined the school for National Simultaneous Storytime and enjoyed the story “The Cow Tripped Over the Moon” written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. We borrowed the book from the library to read at Preschool and look forward to exploring the story further to support our love of books, reading and learning. Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Lilli and all the Preschool children

To contact a member of the P&C, please feel free to approach us before or after school. We can also be contacted at [email protected]. New members are always welcome at the general meetings - the next will be held at 9:15am on Wednesday 14th June in the P&C room.

Another change in the P&C is our canteen. Unfortunately, the canteen was not financially sustainable in its previous configuration, and as a result, a vote at the general meeting resulted in the termination of the canteen’s only employee – Alison White. Alison has worked in the canteen for the past 5 years. Her time and effort was greatly appreciated and it was with sadness that we had to vote to remove her position. However, the fact is that our school’s canteen is only sustainable if it is run by volunteers.

We have had a good response to our call for canteen volunteers, although even more would be appreciated once a fortnight, or once a month, to share the burden. If you have free time on a Monday or Friday morning then we would love your assistance. Please approach us in the canteen, or contact us at the above email address if you can help to keep the canteen operational.

The canteen will also be announcing a new menu in the coming days. The government has announced a new ‘Healthy School Canteen’ strategy which replaces the previous ‘Traffic light’ system. Whilst the new strategy is designed to be phased in over the next 3 years, Yates Avenue Public School has decided to satisfy this new criteria immediately.

The new menu will feature a smaller selection of healthy options with a majority of our food being prepared and cooked on-site – rather than bought frozen and reheated. We will be launching this new menu in the coming days, but will continue to sell our existing stock until it is gone.

As part of this sell-off, our Specials Day has been moved to this Friday, 2nd June – and will feature a farewell to our Slushie Machine. Slushies will be sold for $2.00 until our current ingredients are gone. Other “Amber” items will also be for sale this Friday for the final time. Once these items are gone, no further stock will be ordered. If you’d like your child to partake in this momentous farewell of “Amber foods” then they can bring money to the canteen at lunch, or you can place orders at the canteen before 9:15am for your child to collect the items at lunch.
