YCAC‘s programs are supported in part with public funds from the

New York State Council on the Arts.

The mission of YCAC is

to enrich the quality of life of Finger Lakes

residents, artists, and visitors by providing

opportunities for active participation in the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop

art programs and projects; coordinate,

schedule, and publicize events; develop & main-tain physical facilities.

Programs of YCAC are supported by an annual

grant from the Yates County Legislature, from

commissions collected on Gallery

sales, and by memberships .

Attic Cleaning? Attic Art Sale! I know we are all thinking Spring...cleaning! That of course reminds me of our Attic Art Sale which we will hold in August this year. This sale is a fund raiser for Community Arts Grants. Members of the community receive a monetary incentive to involve art activities in a number of places. Programs for children, adults, and seniors have all experienced an artful happening through this grant.

As you spring clean, consider donating your unwanted artistic valuables to the cen-ter for someone else to enjoy. We seek artwork, antiques, fine linens, crystal, china, jewelry, pottery, silver, and small furnishings. You can drop your items off at the Center, but please call in advance so someone can assist you. If you need items picked up, you may call me (536-5947) or email me ([email protected]) and we will be happy to do that. This will be our first Attic Art Sale right on Main Street and we want to show all the main street passersby our fine fare. Sandy Murrin

Summer Intern

Get ready to welcome our new summer intern! Ayuko Sakuri is finishing her freshman year at Keuka College. A na-tive of Japan, Ayuko attended high school in Switzerland and has traveled extensively in Europe. She was at-tracted to Keuka because of the small size and the focus on experiential, hands on learning. An art major, Ayuko likes working in jewelry and beads and is also interested in acting, films and music (she

plays the flute). You can see a couple examples of Ayuko’s work in the student art show at the Lightner Gallery at Keuka. She starts at the Gallery in June.

Acting Executive Director

The Board of Directors of Yates County Arts Center is pleased to introduce Kristine Pearson, as the Center’s acting interim Executive Director. Kris resides in Branchport with her five year old chocolate lab appropriately named Éclair. Kris has years of experience in proposal development and grants ad-ministration. She brings a strong non profit background in managing opera-tions, finances, programs, and planning to the Center. After completing a Bache-lor of Arts in Rhetoric and Sociology de-gree from Bates College in Lewiston

Maine and graduate courses in Educa-tional Philosophy and Educational Ad-ministration, Kris began her career in many rural settings in Michigan, New York and Vermont. Her last job responsi-bility included Director of Development at Keuka College. Kristine has shared with us that she is a passionate amateur pho-tographer, canoeing instructor and proud aunt of three; Molly, Abby and Jack. We are delighted that Kristine has agreed to support YCAC through this transition as Acting Director because she is exactly what we need as we move into a busy season, building plans and our existing Capital Campaign. Please visit the Center where Kris will be busy in the office creating sea-sonal classes and workshops both in Penn Yan and Sunny Point, helping with our building progress and fund development and in general keeping us organized.

WHEELS Featuring Paintings by Bob Gillespie and Photography of Sid Mann

Reception Friday, June 3, 5:00-7:00 PM

June in Penn Yan is Cruisin’ Night (June 17), so what better way to ramp up for that than to feature “Wheels” for the Yates Gallery exhibit beginning June 3, continu-ing through July 16.

The opening reception: Friday evening

June 3 from 5-7 PM with wines from Glenora Winery.

Drop off for artists will be Tuesday, May 31st

Photographer Sid Mann's Interest in the World of Automobiles

In 1950 as a young boy I first attended the races at Watkins Glen. Armed with an Argus C3 camera I walked the streets of the village shooting the sleek cars assembled there to participate in a race through the village and across the countryside. This is my earli-est memory from a continuing fascination with exotic automobiles. I remember Dave Garroway, a television personality, in his Jaguar, Miles Collier in his MG and Jim Kimberly in his Ferrari. There were also cars in town for show in addition to those destined to race. There were Bugattis, Deusenbergs, Cord, Auburns, names which today mean little to most people but to this young high school student they were an introduc-tion to a lifetime of fascination with antique and foreign cars. During my second Glen Gran Prix the next year I was further enraptured by being asked to help with the race scoring. since, in those days scoring was done by hand and not with fancy timing instruments. I was among several boys assigned to call out the numbers of the race cars as they sped past the scorer's stand on the court house steps. By this time I was reading all I could about foreign cars and collecting information in a scrapbook which contained some of my earliest photo-graphs of cars. As I matured and gained training in both pho-tography and art I began to see elements of automo-biles as designs with shapes, colors, and textures in addition to being machines of sophisticated engineering and amazing performance and elegance. I have recently been intrigued with isolating ar-tistic compositions using automotive elements in my photography. These shots frequently present the viewer with a photo which, if not so selectively presented, might never have been appreciated.

Bob Gillespie and Watkins Glen Bob’s first trip to Watkins Glen when he was 11 years old instilled a love of the sport of auto racing. His childhood sketches became focused on the sleek shapes of the cars he enjoyed so much .Gillespie’s work steadily matured and now, as a member of the American Automotive Artists Society, his recent paint-ings of Watkins Glen racing history not only capture the details of the racing cars, but the action and ex-citement of each event. In these works, the spectators and landscape have equal importance to the cars and drivers. Relying on the advice of local historian Bill Green, he has produced a body of art that appears in collections on both sides of the Atlantic. During the past few years, Hybrid gas/electric cars and Alternate Fueled Vehicles (AFVs) have caught Gillespie’s attention, as they have appeared increas-ingly on the road and in the news. Interest in this new breed of vehicles has also rekindled this artist / edu-cator’s environmental awareness, resulting in his or-ganization of the first “Green Grand Prix” in Septem-ber of 2005. This year’s Green Grand Prix was held at Watkins Glen International Speedway and received interna-tional media coverage including the NY Times and the Washington Post. and added "and when I came I thought that I knew everything!" This is what she and many, many others have learned. This course is taught in watercolor, but the strategies and the confi-dence that they inspire apply to all artists in every media. 1. Learn a secret technique for cor-recting and adjusting your painting 2. Learn how to creatively deal with boring spaces 3. Learn what makes "mud" and dead colors, how to avoid them, and how to use color strategies to express content 4. Create an indispensable "flip book" for organizing both color and design strategies 5. Learn what is content and why it is the secret ingredient in fine art. Through painting, demos, discus-sions, power-point programs, and one-on-ones, participants will work though these five simple steps to take any painting to a full-bodied, exciting completion. Throughout this course artists will be experi-menting on a couple of unfinished paintings. Ugly, problematic paint-ings are the best! Everyone will go on to create paintings in his own style and areas of interest.

Yates County Arts Center is orga-nizing its 2011 Artists Studio Tour and Art Sale scheduled for Satur-day, August 6 and Sunday, August 7, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Besides the many artist studios open to the public, both Saturday and Sun-day, artists will also be clustered at Yates County Arts Center's Gallery in Penn Yan, YCAC's Sunny Point loca-tion on E. Lake Rd, The Art Barn on Blue Spruce Lane, and other sites on or near Keuka Lake. These art clusters provide ease for the visitor and greater expo-sure for the artists. Artists have more visitors when studios are clustered. Consider creating a cluster of studios by inviting art-ists in your area to participate with you or if you have space in your studio offer to host one or more artists to share your space. The Tour would also welcome various centralized outdoor loca-tions that could accommodate

artists’ 10’ x 10’ tents. YCAC will help connect artists who wish to participate with those with indoor or outdoor space to share.

Participating art-ists are greatly encouraged to provide demon-strations of their artistic process during the YCAC Artists Studio Tour and Art Sale. If not actually cre-ating art during the Tour, it is highly

recommended that each studio have an actual art production area (materials and tools dis-played, works in process, etc.) open to the public. Be-sides the art, this is what the public comes to see during a studio tour. Join the fun and excite-ment of the YCAC Art-ists Studio Tour & Art Sale and this great op-portunity to meet and

greet your public, sell direct, and network. More information along with the Registration Form may be found on the YCAC website Stu-dio Tour page. For further infor-mation call Carol Conti at 315-730-0207. Fill out the registration form, attach the necessary membership and registration fees, and mail to YCAC Artists Studio Tour & Sale, 119 E. Elm Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527. Registration is due by May 1st to ensure inclusion in the Artist Stu-dio Tour brochure. Registration forms submitted after that date are welcomed but may not make the printing deadline for the Studio Tour Brochure.

Artists, please act now to reserve your place and be included in the publicity material.

Do not put statements in the negative form. And don't start sentences with a conjunction. If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing. Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do. Unqualified superlatives are the worst of all. De-accession euphemisms. If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is. Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky. Last, but not least, avoid cliches like the plague. ~William Safire, "Great Rules of Writing"

The program will be a presentation by Brett Steeves of the Somers Art Gallery in Hammondsport. He will do an airbrush demonstration, showing how it can produce quick and realistic shadows and highlights, be used to

add depth to more abstract pieces, or by spraying through various materials can create interesting textures. On Wednesday, June 8, at 9:00 AM the PYAG will meet for plein air painting at Borghlum’s Iris Gar-dens, 2202 Austin Road, Geneva. Follow signs from the intersection in Hall. Save Tuesday, July 26, for a summer plein air painting date.

Volunteer in the Spotlight Fred Brockway lives in a modest apartment in a reno-vated building across Seneca Street from the Smith Opera House in Geneva. When he is not patrolling the Smith, Fred spends his time in Penn Yan with the Yates County Arts Center, where he sits on the board of directors, chairs the workshop committee and is integrally involved with the pending renovation of the Maxwell building. He also sat on the Geneva Community Projects com-mittee that facilitated the incredible Kenneth Millington

mural on Castle Street, depicting the history of Seneca Lake. Well, what do you expect? Fred is only 79, which in his case is the new 39. He is inde-fatigable, always smiling and even-tempered. Peo-ple like him, and he likes people. His only disease is a chronic case of vol-unteerism. Fred retired in 2003 from

a career in education in upstate New York and came to Geneva in 2008 to be near his older brother and sister and their families. With a mod-est lifestyle and time on his hands, he was soon, in his own words, “bitten by the volunteer bug.” Fred is also an exhibiting artist at the Yates Gal-lery, where his wood working treasures are avail-able for sale. He loves making structures ready for rehabilita-tion, and he’s in his element to be sure as YCAC seeks to raise $85,000 to gut and renovate the former Village Court building on Main Street in Penn Yan. Meanwhile, Fred has seen the family deal with the recent passing of his older sister. Through all of this, Fred’s good nature and energy seem boundless. President George Herbert Walker Bush called it “a thousand points of light” — that remarkable ten-dency of Americans to give of themselves even when there is nothing to give but themselves. When economic times are bad, especially for the arts, survival of places like the Smith and Yates Arts Center depend on the good will of many vol-unteers. But some of those points of light burn so bright as to defy all reasonable — or even unrea-sonable — expectations.
