Handwriting Find and complete the lowercase ‘e’ handwriting page in your workbook. Phonics - ‘sl’ and gl’ This week in our phonics lessons we are practising consonant blends. Consonant blends are a group of 2 or 3 consonant letters together, that each retain their own sound when pronounced in a word. Today we will be practising the consonant blends ‘sl’ and ‘gl’. In words like ‘slow’, ‘sled’ and ‘slip’ we pronounce both the ‘s’ and the ‘l’ to make the sound ‘sl’. In words like ‘glad’, ‘glue’ and ‘glum’ we pronounce both the ‘g’ and the ‘l’ to make the sound ‘gl’. Find and complete the ‘sl’ and ‘gl’ pages in your workbook. Writing In our writing lessons this week, we are learning to write personal recounts. Remember a recount is a type of text that retells something that has happened in the past. Recounts always follow a particular structure. Personal Recount-Structure Orientation and Background Information This section introduces the recount and tells :- Who was there? What is the event? Where did the event happen? When did the event happen? Series of Events in Time Order with Personal Comments This section tells all the things that happened in the correct time order (chronological order). It may include personal comments to explain how the writer felt about the event as it was happening. Concluding Sentence This section tells what the writer thought of the event overall. Find and read ‘Personal Recount Sample-Our Local Walk’ in your work book. Can you see the three different sections (Orientation, Series of Events and Concluding Sentence) in this text? Look at the ‘Structure of a Recount-Our Local Walk’ page in your workbook to see if you were correct.

GeographyThis Term we are beginning the subject called Geography and this iswhere we study the world around us.Watch the story of Tiddalik the Frog. You may remember the story fromlast term. https://youtu.be/0y3Ta5xcKV4.linkAfter you have watched the following video, discuss the following questions with someone.

● Why did the other animals try to make Tiddalick laugh?● Do you think Tiddalick was greedy?● What could this story teach us about sharing?

This story is from the Wollembi valley in the Hunter Valley of NSW. If you are able to, look atthis area on a map or Google Earth. This story is connected to the rock formation below.

Why do you think this rock might have inspired the story of Tiddilick? Rocks are what we call anatural feature. This is something made or produced by nature. Can you think of any othernatural features? Go to the ‘Natural Features Mindmap’ page of your workbook and writedown your ideas. Keep your ideas for future lessons.Natural features are often used in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, particularlystories that tell how something came to be the way it is. What natural features are in the storyof Tiddalik? If you don’t have these already, add them to your mind map. Go to the ‘NaturalFeatures’ page in your workbook. Choose four natural features that you know and draw apicture of them. Optional Activity: Think of a joke that you would tell Tiddilick to make himlaugh and tell it to someone in your family.

EnglishReadingRose meets Mr Wintergarten By Bob Graham

Listen to the story for a second time to make sure you havehad a good look at the characters and the setting.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qIGaY55qYwAs you are watching or reading the book, notice the coloursBob Graham uses.

What colours are used in the different houses? For example:the Summers family home is depicted in glowing red, yellowand green. These colours represent happiness, love and safety

in the Summers family. By contrast Mr Wintergarten’s home is represented with the use ofblack, grey and brown to give a gloomy, foreboding, lonely atmosphere.

Look at the scene near the beginning of the story showing the Summers family home in theforeground and Mr Wintergarten’s home in the background.

Draw a picture of the Summers home in the middle of the A4 piece of paper in your booklet.Think carefully about which colours you would use torepresent the happy, joyful feeling in this family. Aroundthe outside of the picture write some adjectives(describing words) to describe the Summers family.

On the next page in your booklet, draw another picture ofMr Wintergarten’s home and consider the colours to show his loneliness and misery. Aroundthe outside of the picture write adjectives (describing words) to describe Mr Wintergarten.

Olympics Activity

This week we have been learning about the Olympics. Look at the following PowerPoint tolearn more about the history of the Olympics.

t-t-28132-the-olympics-past-and-present-powerpoint_ver_4.pptxWhat is a sport that you think could be included in the Olympic Games?

Each county that competes in the Olympic Games wears a special uniform to represent whichcounty they come from. Usually the uniforms contain meaningful colours from the country. For example, Australia’s uniform has green and yellow because these colours are part ofAustralia’s culture. Look at the uniforms below. Can you guess what countries they are from?

Today you are going to design an Olympic uniform for the Australian team. Think about the coloursneeded: green and gold or black, red and yellow for indigenous Australians. What symbols or patternswill you include? For example, a kangaroo or Uluru. Go to the ‘Uniform’ page in your workbook anddraw your uniform onto the outline of a person. Tell someone in your family about your design andwhy you chose it.

Returning WorkFeel free to share your Snakes and Laddersgame or a photo of your Olympicmedals with your class teacher.
