Legal Requirements
Compulsory School Age• Students stay at school until they finish Year 10 or turn
16, whichever comes first.
Compulsory Participation Phase• After that, if not working at least 25 hours per week,
young people need to:• stay in education or training for 2 more years, or• get a QCE, or• get a Certificate III vocational qualification or higher, or• turn 17, whichever comes first

QCE & ATAR
It is expected every student will graduate in 2023 with a Queensland Certificate of Education –QCE
An ATAR (Australian tertiary admissions rank) is a fine grade scale used to rank students for University entry
Not every student will receive an ATAR

General subjects
General subjects are suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead primarily to tertiary studies.
General subjects will have external exams in unit 4 – for Math & Science these exams are worth 50%
General subjects will require 4 hours per week study for EACH subject.

Applied subjects
Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work.
One applied subject can count towards an ATAR.

Vocational Education and Training
(VET) Courses.
Students may choose to study a Certificate course during Year 11 & 12
They may also choose a School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship

Unit 1 and 2 (separate): 1 point per ‘satisfactory’ unit Units 3 and 4 (paired): 2 points for ‘C’ or better or no points

Must have 4 General subjects AND a 5th ‘subject’ 5th subject can be⚫ Another General subject⚫ An Applied subject⚫ A completed Certificate iii or iv⚫ A completed Diploma or advanced Diploma
5 General subjects will probably give you your ‘best’ ATAR⚫ But remember you need to choose subjects you are
good at, enjoy, etc.
Do not necessarily have to ‘pass’ a subject – just receive credit for it. Except your English – you must pass your English.

QCE & ATAR Summary
QCE credits accrue from Unit 1 in Year 11 –students must be in suitable subjects from the beginning
External assessment in Unit 4 worth 50% for Math & Sciences
Must pass units 3 & 4 together for 2 QCE points
ATAR replaces OP for University entrance
Can use one Applied subject or VET Certificate III for ATAR calculation
Must pass an English to receive an ATAR

College Prerequisites
Prerequisites and co-requisites are listed on each subject page and are based on Year 10, Semester one results in core subjects.
Students who have not met these requisites will have this flagged on their subject selection tab on OneSchool.
Opportunities to have subject eligibility reviewed will be discussed further at SET planning and in consultation with the curriculum Head of Department for that subject..

SET Planning
Students will start working on their Senior Education and Training Plan in SFW.
The SET Plan is completed in One School.
It is a requirement of every year 10 students in the state to have a completed SET Plan.

VETiS funding
All Queensland secondary school students have access to Government funding under the VETiSscheme (Vet in Schools) up to a Certificate II level.
Students only get to access this funding for one qualification, therefore if your student has NOT already accessed their VETiS funding, they will be able to nominate it for their selected course if applicable.

Skills for Work Program
In 2021 all year 10 students will be enrolled in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Placement.
This will take place period 4 Thursday. It is a great qualification for gaining entry level skills for the workplace.

TAFE and other external RTO’s
Some students choose to study courses through TAFE or ATTC
If you are interested in studying at TAFE one day a week while still studying at school for your QCE.
Courses include construction, automotive, electro technology, engineering, furniture making, telecommunications, crime and justice and rural operations/ animal studies to name a few.

QCE – Credits for VET
Certificate I = 2 – 3 QCE credits
Certificate II = 4 QCE credits
Certificate III= 6 – 8 QCE credits and may count towards an ATAR

Unique Student Identifier (USI)
All enrolments into VET or SAT require a USI
A USI takes about 5 minutes to apply for and you keep it for life.
Forms have been sent home with students and via email.
We require all senior students to have a USI

Work Experience
Scheduled for week ten in term three (13 – 17 September, 2021).
Students will be required to source their own work experience placement
Only students with a completed, signed Work Experience Agreement –Form C will be permitted to proceed on work experience

Increased confidence in ability to learn new skills
Additional experience and referee for resume – potential to be offered a part-time job
