Introduction Welcome to St Peter Claver College’s Year 10 Work Experience Program.
This is both a challenging and rewarding program that gives you the opportunity to experience ‘real‐world’
employment in your desired field.
The AIM of this booklet is to outline the objectives of the Work Experience Program, and to help guide
you through the processes. If you put some planning and forethought into your Work Experience
placement, then you should have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
There are two main OBJECTIVES of the Work Experience program, they are to
1. help develop your skills in applying for and securing a job; and
2. give you an opportunity to sample a potential future careers path.
To help achieve these objectives, please observe the following GUIDELINES.
Students should try and find a placement that is relevant to a preferred future career path. If you
have no idea what you want to do after school, this is a great opportunity to sample a work
environment. Be creative!
Students are required to source employment using their own contacts and networks. This process
ensures that students receive a placement in their first preferences and in a location most suitable
to their requirements.
Most parents will have a wide variety of contacts and networks and will be able to assist their
student in this area.
Use this booklet as a guide to help you through the Work Experience process and as a place to record the
details of your contacts and placement. Ensure that you fill in the information in this booklet and on the
individual Work Experience Agreement form that you are given, that way you will have a record and so
will the school.
Finally, do not get caught out leaving your Work Experience placement too late. Make sure you have a few
different places you would like to try. Do not expect to get a placement on your first try. If you are
experiencing difficulties please see your Careers Teacher or Mrs Smith in the Careers Office.
Good luck!

Insurance Details for Work Experience Worker’s Compensation
Under Queensland legislation, the Education (Work Experience) Act 1996, a student from a state or non‐
state school must not start a work experience placement until the Department of Education Training and
Employment has in place a contract of insurance indemnifying the student and work experience provider
against liability for personal injury or property damage, suffered by the student, the work experience
provider or another person, arising out of the work experience”.
Queensland Catholic Education Commission takes out a central WorkCover policy to cover workers
compensation for all students undertaking work experience in Catholic secondary schools.
The contract for WorkCover insurance between WorkCover and Queensland Catholic Education
Commission covers:
death
permanent impairment
medical costs associated with injury while a student is on work experience.
The school must maintain a register of the details of each student participating in school work experience,
which must include the student’s:
full name
date of birth
address
telephone contact details.
Maintenance of all signed school work experience forms will fulfil this requirement.
By legislation Education (Work Experience) Act 1996:
the student must be at least 14 years old to undertake work experience;
the student must not receive work experience for more than 30 days per year;
a principal may, for a student with a disability, approve work experience for more than 30 days in a
year.
Liability Insurance
Currently this insurance is free to Non‐State Schools. The Department of Education Training and
Employment has an arrangement with an insurer to indemnify both students and work experience
providers in the following situations:
The policy indemnifies the work experience provider against liability in the event where the student is
injured while on the premises of the work experience provider, or at another location, while carrying
out work experience duties on behalf of the work experience provider.
The policy indemnifies the student against liability if the work experience provider or an employee is
injured, or the student damages property.
The policy indemnifies the work experience provider and the student where injury or damage to the
property of a third‐party arises out of the work experience.

industry employee at all times

abseiling
rock and/or mountain climbing
white water rafting and canoeing

It is most important for the school to make sure that the WORK EXPERIENCE AGREEMENT (FORM C) is
completed prior to a student entering the workplace and that the original of the completed Agreement is
securely filed by the school. This document is essential in the event of a claim being made on both Worker’s
Compensation and Liability Insurance.
