School Formal Hard to believe that another Formal has come and gone. What an absolutely fabulous night, not only did our students look beautiful but each and every one conducted themselves to a standard that was a credit to themselves, their families and their school. Farewell to those families who leave us and we wish Year 12 2019 every success in the future. Staff Car Park The staff car park is not a drop off place for students. The only vehicles who can access this area is staff, deliveries and taxi transport for identified students. Students are also aware that this area is out of bounds to ensure the safety of everyone. Senior Induction Hot on the heels of the Year 12 leaving, our newest Year 12 were inducted as the Seniors of the school on Monday. As always it was wonderful to see so many community members who were able to attend to witness this special event in the senior calendar. I was very proud of all the students but especially supportive of the number of students who put themselves forward as Student Leaders. I look forward to working closely with all students in 2020. Staff Development As previously advertised, Kyogle HS will be closed on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 December. As part of shifting this allocated staff development time, staff meet on Tuesday evening to finalise compliance training as well as wrap up the great work that has been happening in Teams this year. Teams this year have been focused on Learning Intentions & Success Criteria; Peer Assessment; Self Assessment; Effective Questioning and Effective Feedback and 2019 has been about upskilling all staff in these areas before implementation in 2020. I appreciate the professionalism and commitment of so many of our teachers and look forward to continuing the work next year. End of the Year Traditionally Kyogle HS has run end of year activities for our students. This year we are changing the format in an effort to engage more students. As such the end of year will look like: Monday 16 December - Final Assembly 12 noon Tuesday 17 December - End of Year Activities (mixture of cost and no cost options) Wednesday 18 December - Movies/BBQ/Pool at no cost to the students. Have a wonderful fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter.

Semester 2 Junior Examinations are being held this week involving subjects across Yrs 7-10. I wish all students well in their exams. I remind all students, parents and carers of the value of exams and highlight the following expectations from our PBL lessons:

Our Senior Induction Assembly was held on Monday. Our 2020 Captains are Madalyn Langley and Teykoa Harley and Vice-Captains are Montana-Rose Birkbeck and Travis Hoffman. Congratulations to all four, I look forward to working with them across 2020.

On Tuesday NRL legend Nathan Hindmarsh visited KHS will leaders from Solid Mob. Students listened intently to all speakers who delivered messages around alcohol, nicotine and drug use and abuse and the effects of gambling. Nathan in particular gave a clear message around the problems associated with gambling and how gambling affected his glittering NRL career as the longest servicing player for Parramatta, his legend status playing both NSW and Australia. The day concluded with a BBQ and opportunity to talk with Nathan. There were many autographs and photos.

Term 4 continues on across weeks 7 and 8 with a final KEEP day and Year 9 excursion to Sydney. I encourage all students and teachers to engage and enjoy the experiences offered at KHS. David Hanley - Deputy Principal

RRISK Parties - Will You Allow Alcohol at Your Young Person’s Party?

Many parents and carers will be helping young people in their family celebrate birthdays, special occasions, finishing their school year or leaving school. Regardless of where the function will be held, it is against the law to obtain for, or supply alcohol to anyone under 18 years of age - even at private parties. This activity is called secondary supply of alcohol - an offence that carries a maximum penalty up to $11,000 and 12 months prison. On the spot fines of $1100 can also be issued by police.

This information comes to you from the NSW Department of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. Check their website for fur-ther information: https://www.liquorandgaming.nsw.gov.au/community-and-stakeholders/underage-drinking/parents-supplying-alcohol-to-minors Points to consider:

• What do you do if an underage guest arrives with alcohol?

• What do you do if they arrive intoxicated?

• What do you do if your alcohol has been consumed during the course of the party?

It is much easier to plan and control what happens at your next party if you follow some simple guidelines. Here are some suggestions that can make a difference:

• Ideally RSVP invitations should be issued, giving as many details as possible about times of starting and finishing, the nature of the party, a dress code, how it will be supervised and how guests will return home. Indicate guests will be required to bring their invitation for party entry.

• On the invitation, suggest guest parents contact host parents to fine tune details and discuss any concerns. This will ensure parents are not pressured against their better judgement and gives everyone permission to talk about supervision, safety, alcohol and drug issues.

• Have only one entrance or exit to make it easier to control who attends your party.

• Guest lists should be kept to a manageable size. If guest numbers are large, ask other parents to assist with super-vision or consider hiring security personnel.

• Host parents need to be aware of appropriate return transport for guests and/or provide overnight, supervised ac-commodation. Ensure you have alternative arrangements for guests who are drivers, and for guests who are pas-sengers without fit drivers

• Make it clear in advance it is an alcohol free party. (Parents are reminded of the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing penalties cited earlier).

• Alcohol at parties is not easily supervised. Alcohol can easily be consumed in advance or mixed with soft drinks prior to the party. Alcohol may be left outside in cars or hidden in bushes. Although these problems can occur, they are less likely if the party is well supervised. Light up dark or hidden areas. Lock off areas of the house that are not easy to monitor. Avoid punchbowl drinks that may easily be spiked.

• Remove BYO alcohol from under 18s and return this to parents or carers.

• If guests are a mixture of under and over 18s, there is less control over the consumption of alcohol. A nominated adult should serve alcohol and can require IDs prior to serving.

• Actively serve non-salty food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the party. Attractive non-alcoholic drinks are a great alternative! Provide easily accessible cold and room temperature water, “Mocktails”, non-alcoholic punches, fruit juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea. This will slow down alcohol consumption for those who are drinking.

• If under 18s consume alcohol or other drugs during the party, their parents should be contacted and asked to collect them. Parents should be advised of unacceptable behaviour. Ensure you have the contact details, not just of guests, but of their carers/ parents.

• Be firm about excluding gatecrashers. If admittance is by invitation only, gatecrashers are less likely. Prior to the party, encourage students not to broadcast party details in the school community, or via social media/mobile phone apps. If many gatecrashers arrive, ensure the safety and safe exit of invited guests by cancelling or postponing the party.

• Parents should be present and provide active supervision throughout the party.

• At the end of the party, try and speak to all guests before they leave. If anyone is unfit to drive, make alternative arrangements for them and their passengers.

• If you are planning a large party, it may be a good idea to employ security guards A useful website to help you plan a successful party and avoid problems: https://adf.org.au/alcohol-drug-use/young-people/safe-partying/hosting-teenage-party/

SOLID MOB

On Tuesday, 19th November we welcomed the Solid Mob crew to KHS. They were accompanied by Parramatta Eels legend, Nathan Hindmarsh. Solid Mob is a team of 6 people (Tobacco Action Workers and Healthy Lifestyle Workers) who work together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to raise awareness of the health impacts of tobacco smoking and chronic disease. Solid Mob provide a range of activities within communities to support and encourage smokefree environments, educate and promote quitting and encourage healthy lifestyles.

TAS Wow the term is flying by and so much has happened in the TAS Faculty. Late last term students in Food Technology held a High Tea Event for staff. There was an abundance of beautiful cakes which staff comments being “expertly made” being “delightfully tasty, fluffy,” “colourful”, and “full of flavour.” Well done to all students that worked so hard on the day to produce such brilliant cakes and cupcakes!

This term we have had two student teachers for the past five to six weeks who have learnt about our school and taught students across many TAS focus areas. We wish both Mr Coggan and Mr McGreggor best wishes with finalising their teaching studies and thank them for their ongoing commitment to quality teaching practices with students. We look forward to seeing them again, when they are qualified teachers. With junior student examinations underway this week, we encourage all students to spend some study time to achieve positive results. Additionally, with the term coming to an end soon, there are some amazing projects that will soon be completed in Industrial Arts Timber and Metal classes. We look forward to students taking these projects home and please ask for carers and parents to finalise any outstanding TAS class contributions.

The Summer’s heat has helped the planted produce in our mobile garden beds along. A big thank you goes out to our amazing General Assistants Mr Fowler and Mr Clark for cutting and welding down the containers and getting the pods plant ready. We have been lovingly watering our edible flowers, vegetables and herbs with students in TAS Food Technology and Hospitality kitchens using the produce in our kitchens this term. Our thoughts are positive for all the farmers and agricultural producers in the area who are doing the best they can with our heatwave weather and lack of rain.

This weekend students from Hospitality and Food Technology will work together to help support the Show Society of Kyogle with a thank you afternoon for 2019 Show Volunteers. I would like to congratulate our students for willingly giving up their weekend time, to support this special community event. Mrs Kat Byrnes Head Teacher TAS & VET
