TAKE CARE OF YOUR SAFETY!Please cross all roads leading to and from school safely.

Set a good example for each other especially for our young R-6 students, who look up to and copy the older students when crossing roads.

Also, please be polite to drivers who stop for you to cross the road.

Welcome to term 2. I had a great Long Service leave and am pleased to be back at school and wish to thank the staff who took on new roles to support my leave.

Open Night 7th May - the evening was successful and staff and students showcased our school with pride. We appreciate the ongoing interest in our school and community. It goes beyond enrolments for Year 8 students, but looks at the unique R-12 package Paralowie has to offer.

Student Free Day 3rd May - R-12 staff worked with Janine Gordon (James Fergusson) and key staff on strategies to improve student literacy and numeracy. We continue to support strategies with designated teaching time to provide support in classrooms, working with teachers to improve student literacy and numeracy. Your support on this T & D day was greatly appreciated.

Graffiti Attack - our school suffered a serious graffiti attack during the early hours of May 1st. Students, families and staff were distressed by the damaged that occurred. On a positive note the media stories and the work SAPOL are doing to apprehend the culprits is very heartening. On the day, our students were fabulous and very concerned about the disgraceful acts of vandalism.

Uniform - the weather is becoming cooler. Please be prepared with winter uniform. Our uniform shop has a range of tops and sizes.

New Staff and Students - make the most of your time at Paralowie R-12 and take advantage of all opportunities for learning and improvement.

Best wishes for a successful term 2.

Please contact the school if you have any concerns.

Yours sincerely

NIGHT, following the recent

graffiti incident.

EXPLORING OUR SOLAR SYSTEMFirstly, to develop an idea of the scale, Year 5 and 6 students were put into groups on the oval to show the relative mass and distance of each planet and their position in the solar system. We followed this up with an excursion to the Mawson Lakes Planetarium, where students journeyed through the solar system, examining constellations and planets. We watched a film showing the strange weather on each planet. Finally, groups created dioramas or models to show their understanding of the solar system.

SCIENCE FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS

It has been a busy start to the year in our Science Faculty. We welcomed Adelaide University student, Ben Menadue to our recent year 10 assembly. Ben is about to finish his PhD in Physics, and is researching and developing a computer that works fast, at “Quantum” speeds. We heard about his travels around the world connecting with other like-minded scientists, his research and life at University. He talked about the many career pathways and options available.

Our faculty aims to promote, encourage and show the students the value of learning science and where it can take them. Our teachers will be engaging with their students in conversations on the many possibilities of careers in science.

We were part of the Transition day where students from visiting primary schools experienced science hands on.

Our year 12 Biology students have enjoyed doing was the enzyme practical. The year 11 Chemistry class has been studying the process of fermentation and how it relates to the wine industry in SA.

The science faculty has been actively developing a common semester year 10 Science Exam which will happen at the end of this term. This is in line with the Australian National Curriculum.

STUDYING INDONESIAN IN R-6

During Indonesian lessons students from Years R-6 have been making Buntings.

Students presented these Buntings at the R-6 Assembly where they also sang an Indonesian song.

COMPUTING BUDDY PROJECT

by Danii Lukic and Hannah Kay-Turrell(Year 9)

For three weeks last term, Robyn Mortimers Year 9 computing class and Kristyn Howley’s Room 14 class were involved in a buddy project.

We asked the Year 1 and 2 students questions about what they would like to be when they’re older, what colours they like, what sports they play and more. We took web cam photos of our buddies to edit in Photoshop and add to images that relate to them.

Our buddies are also trying out some Photoshop skills. We will present all our Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop creations as movies and print posters for our buddies.

We really enjoyed working and meeting with our adorable buddies. We hope they enjoyed the project too.

These Buntings were then displayed at the recent Indonesian Festival in Adelaide.
