Barnhill Sixth Form Induction

Introduction Congratulations on completing one of life’s great milestones – Year 11 – and embarking on the next stage of your lives. Taking the next step here at Barnhill is all about becoming a more independent learner, taking responsibility for your education and getting into good habits that will see you through your University career or give you a great start in the world of work.

In order to help, support and give you the best possible start to Sixth Form, this booklet sets out a Summer Task for each option subject for you to work through over the summer break. They are designed to get you ready for your Year 12 subjects but also to keep your mind engaged with learning. For some of you, the Summer Tasks will build on previous skills and content, as you have studied the subject at the GCSE level. For others, this will be the first time you’ve encountered the subject and the content will be new and beyond what you’ve previously learned. Regardless of how you come to the subject, you will find the pace and expectations of Year 12 more challenging but nonetheless rewarding.

Your responsibility is to take the Summer Tasks for the subjects you are looking to do in Year 12 and complete them by the first subject lesson in September. When you have your final Year 12 Interview (after you get your GCSE grades in August), you will be expected to discuss how much you’ve done on your Summer Tasks. It will be part of the interview process, so it would be in your best interests to have done something in preparation for that.

So, invest some time over the summer break completing your Summer Tasks, organise yourself for the year ahead, and enjoy the sun. Give yourself the best possible start to the next very important stage in your life.

Looking forward to working with you next year!

CREATIVE MEDIA – LEVEL 2 Your L2 BTEC course will comprise a mixture of understanding key terms and concepts within the Media industries, and being able to make use of these concepts yourself, as well as production work where you will make use of practical skills. The summer tasks you have been set below, reflect the mix of theory and practical. Task 1 Use any video camera you have easy access to (a mobile phone camera is fine, but if you have a camcorder you can use that) to make a short film. The requirements the film must meet are outlined below:

• It must be between 2 minutes and 3 minutes in running time. • It must tell a complete story (It must have a beginning, a middle and an

ending) • It must have at least two characters • At some point in the film a character must clap their hands • At some point in the film a character must give another character an object.

Other than these requirements above, the rest of the ideas are up to you. It can be funny, it can be sad, or both. Try, as much as possible, to make it entertaining for an audience to watch. Try to keep the camera work steady, so that it looks good. We will screen all of these short films to the class in September, so you will need to have them on disc or USB as a playable video file. Task 2 Show your short film to at least fifteen people (they don’t all have to watch it at the same time). Try to get some males and some females and a range of different age groups. After they have watched the film, get a quote from them about what they thought of the film and what they will most remember about it. Write these quotes down (or record them) and make a note of whether they are male or female and how old they are. You will have to present the feedback you got on your film from these people to the class in September.

BTEC IT – LEVEL 2 Task 1 All Mobile Phones come with a User guide; this shows the user how to use the basic functions of the phone. Your task is to create a user guide (either using Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher) for the phone you have. You need to include the following to complete this task:

• Simple step-by-step instructions to demonstrate the basics of the phone o How to save a new contact o How to make a phone call o How to send a text message o How to install an app o How to set an alarm o How to use the internet o How to put an event in the calendar o How to take a photo/record a video

• Screenshots showing what the phone screen will be displaying as the user completes a function (all modern smartphones allow you to take screenshots – you will have to work out how to do this – alternatively you can use a digital camera to take a picture of the phone screen and then edit the picture).

The guide must be simple to follow. Imagine a person you know that is really bad at using technology (it might be your mum, dad, or one of your grandparents). You need to write the user guide so that they could understand and follow it!

PUBLIC SERVICES – LEVEL 2 Students need to complete the following induction tasks in order to take the course in September (2 parts to be completed).

Task 1 Conduct some research into what careers there are in the Public Services sector (a minimum of 5 different careers) and explain what each of them are and what skills are needed. Then present your findings in the form of a written report, a PowerPoint presentation or a short video. Ensure you explain in your piece of work why you may or may not be suitable for each career you have researched. Task 2 Choose two different public services and describe how they use teamwork in their day to day work. You may wish to begin by describing what teamwork is. In order to complete the task, you can do this by picking one of the following methods:

1. Write a piece (Word) describing teamwork in the two different Public Services OR

2. Create a poster describing teamwork in the two different Public Services OR

3. Create a presentation (PowerPoint) describing teamwork in the two different Public Services

What will completing these tasks mean? You will develop your research skills as you will have to be selective. Remember, we will not accept work that is copied and pasted as this is plagiarism and this can result in you being dismissed from the course. All in all this will be excellent preparation to ensure you are able to begin to complete tasks in Public Services straight away in September.

Submission date This must be submitted at the start of your first Public Services lesson in September. You will be assessed by your classmates who will grade you using a grade sheet. They will also ask you questions to test your understanding at the end.

You have been asked to identify a local need and demonstrate how this represents a potentially successful business opportunity. You are required to write a report in which you demonstrate why your recommendation will be successful.

Task 1: Identify a local need Identify a business start-up idea. It should meet a need in the local community that is not being met or only partially being met. You are only being offered £20,000 so it must be small.

Task 2: Provide a brief outline of your local area Research may include: Population, local businesses that already exist, tourist attractions, number of tourists visiting the area, local employment, schools, and number of pupils in the schools, age ranges, and leisure facilities. You need to identify appropriate research evidence to provide justification for your business idea.

Task 3 : Market Research Design market research in terms of questionnaires to find out how your business idea can best meet the need of your local community. Devise a questionnaire which includes questions about the:

• purpose of the questionnaire; • market segments - customers personal details, e.g. gender, age, occupation etc. • Product the business sells - what customers are looking for (safety, quality,

ECONOMICS It is really important that you develop an awareness of how Economics applies to the real world. Part of this will involve you having an understanding of economic issues that are in the news. During your A level, you will develop the ability to apply the theory that you are learning in class to real world situations and to use it to analyse the economic effects as they unfold. Task 1 Research two of the following economic issues:

- Quantitative easing - Cap on welfare spending - Current unemployment figures - Current inflation figures - Current figures for economic growth and the recession - Trade with BRIC economies - What is happening in the UK housing market - World gold prices - World oil prices - The value of £ sterling against the euro and the dollar

Task 2 Find a news article on each of the two issues you researched above. You can either use a hard copy of a newspaper or you can use an online news article.

In each case, you should read the article carefully and highlight the main points. Then answer the following questions: 1. Summarise the main points of the news article. 2. What is your response to the article? 3. Why do you think this issue is important or relevant? 4. Which groups of people in society would be affected?

IT Task 1 All Mobile Phones come with a User guide; this shows the user how to use the basic functions of the phone.

MEDIA STUDIES

Analysis of moving image texts will be a significant component of both your coursework unit (which is worth 50% of your marks) and also your case studies, which will form the preparation for your examination in the summer (the other 50%). Therefore, it will be extremely important that you get a grasp of these kinds of analytical skills and how they can be applied in depth to one specific text. Task 1 Over the summer, in preparation for starting the course, you should complete the following, ready to hand in at your first Media Studies lesson in September:

• Select a film text. It must have been released at the cinema in the last two years. It can be in any genre, but must have been shown in cinemas.

• Watch the film, at least twice. • While you watch the film, make notes on each of the following:

o The plot or story – how does it keep the viewer interested? How would you summarise what the film is about?

o The characters – what makes them interesting? How typical/predictable are they? How believable/realistic are they?

o The place and time the film is set in – how important is the setting? Why has that setting/time been chosen? Does it seem realistic? How is it made to seem that way?

o Are there two or more women in the film? Do they talk to each other? Do they talk to each other about something other than a man? Explain.

o What message do you think the film is trying to communicate to the audience?

Task 2 Using the notes you have taken while watching the film, write this up into an essay, answering the following question:

‘Modern movies are predictable, unimaginative, unrealistic and stereotypical.’ How far do you agree with this statement? Use the film you have chosen to explain your ideas.

Aim to write between 1000 and 2000 words.

MUSIC Next year, you will be doing a Level 3 BTEC. You will have the choice of studying production, composition or performance. Step 1: Decide which if these options most appeals to you. Step 2: Decide the most relevant task from the ones listed below Performance Task 1 Choose a song, ensuring that it is challenging. Use YouTube or another resource to learn how to play it. Whilst you are learning it, keep a detailed diary of the process, including:

How you initially learned it – in pieces, one hand at a time, etc. Your progress – how long did it take, how much did you learn per day, etc... Your practice – how did you practice, how long did you spend, did you do exercises etc…

Your practice log needs to be word processed, with no spelling or grammar mistakes. Production Task 1 Complete a detailed write-up about a piece of technology used in modern music production. Choose from either: Synthesiser or Sampler. Your write-up should include the basic history of the equipment, how it functions, the different ways it is used and anything else that you think it relevant. It needs to be word processed, with no spelling or grammar mistakes. Composition Task 1 Create 5 ideas on your instrument of choice. They can be any of the following: Chord sequence, melody/ostinato, set of loops, tones rows, etc. Make sure that you record them, and write them down. You will also need to write down the process you went through, explaining in detail how you came up with each idea, and how you evaluated and made it better. Your write up needs to be word processed, with no spelling or grammar mistakes.

PHOTOGRAPHY Everyday: Ordinary and Extraordinary Photographers are artists who record and present the world around them in ways which are different to just holiday snaps. Many show everyday scenes which make the viewer question who we are and what we do. Fay Godwin, Wolfgang Tillmans and Uma Barth all photograph objects in situations that are ordinary. By exhibiting them, they become extraordinary. For the first lesson back in September, you need to complete the following: Task 1 Prepare an A4 research page on one of the photographers mentioned above. Task 2 Take a series of photographs, at least 20, in the style of the photographer you chose. Task 3 Prepare a presentation which shows and explains your five best photographs and why. Extension Task Should you wish to push yourself over the summer then here are some suggestions:

• You could visit Tate Modern, The Photographers Gallery to see some photographic work.

• Keep a daily photo book of objects around you. Remember the work you have done in the Summer Workshops... Bring this work with you to the first lesson back.

PHYSICS Physics offers you the opportunity to study, in depth, the physical forces which govern our lives and help shape the universe around us. Physics is essentially a practical subject and during the course, you will carry out many practical activities. Your success as a Physicist at A-level and beyond depends on building upon, as well as applying, your scientific knowledge and skill acquired through GCSE, with good literacy and numeracy aptitude in problem solving. You must be familiar with the content from P2 and P3 at GCSE before starting the AS Physics course. A good GCSE revision guide will help you to cover or revise these units. The AS textbook, which you are advised to purchase in advance of starting Physics in September, is AQA PHYSICS A Student Book, by Jim Breithaupt, published by Nelson Thornes. ISBN: 978-0-7487-8282-6. You will start both unit 1 and 2 in September and any reading that you do from the book will be beneficial to you. Task 1 Over the summer, you are required to research any two of the following AS Physics topics and present your work either as an A3 poster, written document (maximum 3 pages) or Power Point presentation (maximum 5 slides).

Topics: 1. Fundamental particles and their interactions 2. Wave-Particle duality of light and its implications to scientific

developments 3. Newton’s laws of motion and their applications in real life context 4. The “Jekyll and Hyde” of Radiation

You should:

A. Make sure you have good understanding of the topics you have chosen, as you will be asked a few questions on them. Your work should be brought to the first lesson compiled neatly in a folder. (A printed copy of the written document or PowerPoint is needed.)

B. Use any physics book, website or other literature of your choice, which should be referenced. You will be assessed on using good English, organising information clearly and using specialist terms and language where appropriate.

PSYCHOLOGY

Task 1 Using the media (TV, radio, newspapers, internet, magazines etc.), look for stories and possibly research studies that have been recently published on one of the following subjects:

• Obedience • Prejudice • Media influence on behaviour • Gender development • Other psychological phenomenon

Write a short review describing what has been found, the research that was conducted, what flaws you can spot in the method and then consider why you might agree or disagree with the findings. Think carefully about who the research is aimed at and who might benefit from this research. I do not expect cut and pasted work and am very good at spotting it! So make sure it is in your own words.

Task 2 Write a response to the following statement:

“All behaviour is a result of the genes that we possess from birth.”

I expect at least one side of typed A4 work which has been carefully checked for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Bring the work to our first lesson in September as we will be using it in the lesson.

Have a great summer holiday!

PUBLIC SERVICES Students need to complete the following Induction Tasks in order to take the course in September. Task 1 Conduct some research into what careers there are in the Public Services sector (a minimum of 5 different careers). Explain what each of them are and what skills are needed. Ensure you research each profession and state why you may or may not be suitable for the role. Task 2 Prepare a booklet that describes the role of the Crime Scene Investigation Unit. The CSI unit is crucial in solving crimes to gain evidence for prosecution. The booklet should include the role of the CSI unit and what they do (DNA, finger printing and method of operation). The booklet should be at least 4 pages long and must include relevant images to accompany the text. Task 3 Read pages 8 & 9 (The Constitution), 12 & 13 (Parliament), 14, 15, 16 & 17 (Parliament) from http://www.parliament.uk/documents/education/online-resources/printed-resources/Find-your-way-A-Level-booklet.pdf You will be examined on this on your first week back.

What will completing these tasks mean? You will develop your research skills as you will have to be selective. Remember, we will not accept work that is copied and pasted as this is plagiarism and can result in you being dismissed from the course. All in all, this will be excellent preparation to ensure you are able to begin to complete class work straight away in September.

SOCIOLOGY Task 1 Using the internet, books, television and other sources of your choice, research the following people:

• Karl Marx • Talcott Parsons • Anne Oakley

Answer the following questions for each of the sociologists above: 1. What are their main beliefs? 2. How do they view society? 3. Which view do you most agree with and why?

Task 2

“One of the problems we have is children are not in school long enough in the day and during the year.” -Michael Gove

Michael Gove is the Secretary of State for Education; over the recent months he has proposed a number of changes that could affect your future. Your task is to research Gove’s ideas and write a report (1-2 sides A4) on what you think of the propositions and how you think they will impact on students and teachers across the country. YOU MUST NOT COPY AND PASTE THE INFORMATION. Please bring your completed work to the first lesson back in September. Hope you have a lovely summer.

DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES

Task 1 Watch a live theatre production, any theatre production that you have not seen before, and write a review on it. The review will need to be 2000 words and there are some prompts below to help you write the review.

Introduction. Tell your reader what you saw, where and when. Describe in detail what kind of play this was (drama, comedy, Shakespeare history play, farce – be as specific as possible). Tell your reader what your general response to the production was. Did you find it an enjoyable experience? Why exactly? Did it give you food for thought? About what and why? What did you learn about modern theatre practices?

The Direction. The director is the person who, in the end, is responsible for what you see on stage. What meanings in this play were emphasised. How did the design, staging, and character and acting style choices draw attention to these? Were these choices successful in creating the impact on the audience you thought the director and creative team intended? Did the theatre itself and the playing area suit the production? Why or why not? Were the stage pictures interesting and/or attractive as well as meaningful? Was there an interesting and varied use of stage space? Was the focus generally where it should be? What did you think about the pace of the production?

The Acting. Discuss the acting. Was it of a particular kind? Stylised in some way, using masks, very physical, reminded you of circus performers, very

melodramatic, realistic or ‘fourth wall’ (these are only a few of the possibilities). What can you say about the kind of acting in this production compared with the kind of work you’ve seen in other productions and done yourself? Was the style of acting appropriate to the kind of play and style of production? Why or why not? Which performances did you particularly admire? Be very specific in saying why.

The Design. How did the design contribute to the production’s meanings? Describe

the sets, lights and costumes. What kind of a statement did each of these make.

Conclusion. You might want to elaborate on your production. What did you particularly like about the production? How did it illumine your understanding of life?

Your review is due the first lesson in September.

Good Luck and enjoy!
