Year 2 – ReadingWeek beginning 15th June 2020

This week we will be exploring the differences between fiction and non fiction texts and reading a book about the seasons.

Fiction or Non-fiction?What do these words mean?

Fiction Non-fiction

• Has characters.• Is not real.• Has a setting.• Has a beginning,

middle and end.

• Is real and based on facts.

• Tells the reader information.

• Usually has a contents page.

• Often has diagrams or photographs

• Usually has subheadings.

Fiction or non-fiction?

Last week we looked at the story ‘The Tear Thief’.Do you think this was fiction or non-fiction?

If you said fiction, then you were right! Well done.

This week we will be looking at a book called ‘Season Swap’. Here are a few pages to help you decide if it is fiction or non-fiction. What do you think?

If you said non - fiction, then you were right! Well done.

Task: Can you lay out your page like this? Try to use a ruler to make your lines straight and your presentation really smart.

Fiction or non-fiction?

Fiction Non-fiction

Task 1: Have a look at these book covers and pages, can you sort them into fiction and non-fiction? Write the titles of the books in the correct columns of the table you have drawn. You could explore any books that you have at home and add these too.

There are 12 book titles to sort over the next few slides.

Once you have had a go at sorting these book titles, check your answers on the next page.

Well done for completing task 1!

For the next task, we are going to look a bit more closely at the features of non-fiction books.

Just like fiction (story) books, non-fiction books have a front cover with a title, picture and the author’s name and a back cover which usually has a blurb on it. The blurb tells you a bit more about what the book will be about.

The first page in a non-fiction book is often the contents page.

This is different to most fiction books. But sometimes fiction books do have a contents page so don’t get caught out! You must look for more than one clue to tell you if a book is fiction or non-fiction.

A contents page will tell you which page number to go to, to find a particular topic or piece of information.

In the example above, if I wanted to learn more about Autumn, I could look on page 10 or page 18.

Your turn: Which page would you go to if you wanted to find out about Winter?

Subheadings: Non-fiction books often have subheadings. These tell us a bit more about what the page/space or paragraph will be about.

There are usually photographs.

Words in bold. These are usually words that you will find in the glossary.

Glossary: The glossary explains what some of the words mean. These words are usually technical words that you need to know for this book.

The word is written in bold just like the text was on the last slide.

There is then a definition, like you would find in a dictionary. This tells you what the word means.

Index: This is a little bit like the contents page. It tells you which page to look at to find information. You use it to find precise information.

Task 2: Can you label the different parts of the non-fiction book (on the next slide) with the correct names. Choose the correct word from the word bank and write it next to the correct letter in the book.

The next slides contain the book ‘Season Swap’. You will need to read this book before you can complete task 3 at the end.

United Kingdom, the UK – Where we live! And where Jack in the book is from.

Australia – Where Annabel in the book is from.

In the book, some of the pages are split in half. The top half is about the United Kingdom and the bottom half is about Australia. Don’t get in a muddle like I did!

Task 3: True or false? There will be 2 challenges on the next few slides. You should try to complete at least one challenge. With your grown up, choose the right challenge for you.

Challenge 1 – I will tell you which page of the book to look at to find the answer. Page numbers are in the corner of the picture. You need to decide if what I have written here is true or false and write your answer down in your book, next to the question number.

1. Children in Australia go back to school in the Autumn. (Page 18)2. Jack lives in Manchester. (Page 4)3. It takes one day for the Earth to move around the Sun. (Page 5)4.
