Year 2 SATs

and transition into Year 3

Parents’ meeting 2016

Aims of session

To provide parents with information

about:

◦ changes to KS1 SATS (nationally)

◦ teacher assessment

◦ The organisation of KS1 SATs at Hoole St

Michael

◦ transition from Year 2 (KS1) to Year 3 (KS2) at

Hoole St Michael

JD

Year 2 SATs

Key Changes

Additional reading and mathematics papers

Introduction of a KS1 SPAG test

There is no longer a test for English writing

KS1 national curriculum test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead.

JD

Year 2 SATs A new set of KS1 national curriculum tests replaces the

previous tests and tasks. The new tests consist of: ◦ English reading Paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer

booklet

◦ English reading Paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet

◦ English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: spelling

◦ English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: questions

◦ mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic

◦ mathematics Paper 2: reasoning

Year 2 Reading SAT The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers:

◦ Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts totalling 400 to 700 words, with questions interspersed

◦ Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words.

Children will write their answers in a separate booklet

Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the marks, and should take around 30 minutes, but children will

not be strictly timed, as the tests are not intended to assess children’s ability to work at speed.

The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get

progressively more difficult towards the end of the test. Teachers will have the option to stop the test

at any point that they feel is appropriate for a particular child.

There will be a variety of question types:

◦ Multiple choice

◦ Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show in which order they happened in the

story’

◦ Matching, e.g. ‘Match the character to the job that they do in the story’

◦ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title’

◦ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that shows what the weather was like in the story’

◦ Short answer, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’

◦ Open-ended answer, e.g. ‘Why did Lucy write the letter to her grandmother? Give two reasons’

JD/KS

Year 2 SPAG SAT Children taking Key Stage 1 SATs will sit two separate papers in grammar, spelling and

punctuation:

Paper 1: a 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes and worth 10 marks.

Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test, in two sections of around 10

minutes each (with a break between, if necessary), worth 20 marks. This will involve a

mixture of selecting the right answers e.g. through multiple choice, and writing short

answers.

JD/KS

Year 2 mathematics SAT The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers:

Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 25 marks and taking around 15 minutes.

Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking

35 minutes, with a break if necessary. There will be a variety of question types: multiple

choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a

shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method).

Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.

JD/KS

Practice SATs

All pupils in Year 2 have experienced practice SAT papers.

What next?

◦ Reading: using phrases and vocabulary directly from the text when answering comprehension questions.

◦ Reading: experience of reading extended texts; going back and being able to retrieve the correct information; timing

◦ When reading at home the children need to be continually asked questions, talk about the story, predict what might happen next and discuss how characters are feeling at certain points in the story.

KS

Practice SATs

All pupils in Year 2 have experienced some practice SAT papers.

What next?

◦ SPAG: Spelling – common exception words and high frequency words must be learnt

◦ SPAG: Grammar – understanding of verbs; different sentence types – i.e. questions, commands, statements, exclamations

◦ Spelling and grammar will also inform teacher assessment of writing

KS

Practice SATs

All pupils in Year 2 have experienced some practice SAT papers.

What next?

◦ Maths (arithmetic): mental calculations, written calculations (base 10) – subtraction and addition, times-tables (2s, 5s, 10s)

◦ Maths (reasoning): 2D shapes and 3D shapes; timing

◦ We can read the words in the question but cannot read any numbers, rephrase words or help them choose the calculation.

Year 2 SATs in our school

The KS1 tests do not have set days for their administration, but schools must administer the tests during May 2016

Our SATs will take place week beginning 16th May (week after the KS2 SATs).

Small groups of 5 or 6 will sit in the TLC with Miss Sykes; Mrs Horn will be in Class 2 with the remainder of the class.

Not time restricted, but recommended times

We want the children to feel as calm and prepared as possible.

Reassure your child that we want them to do their best but there is also more to life at Hoole St Michael when you are 6 or 7 years old and there is nothing to worry about!

KS

Scaled Scores

For the KS1 tests a scaled score of 100 will always represent the ‘expected standard’.

A pupil’s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table.

For 2016 KS1 tests, conversion tables will be published on GOV.UK at the beginning of June 2016. Teachers will need to use these to translate pupils’ raw scores into scaled scores to see whether each pupil has met the expected standard.

Interim teacher assessment

frameworks

From the DFE

Following the removal of teacher assessment levels, interim teacher assessment frameworks have been provided to support teachers in making robust and accurate judgements for pupils at the end of KS1 in 2016.

The interim teacher assessment frameworks for key stage 1 are for 2015 to 2016 only. The DfE is evaluating options for future years.

JD

Interim teacher assessment

frameworks Each of the three standards within the

interim framework contains a number of ‘pupil can’ statements. To demonstrate that pupils have met a standard within this interim framework, teachers will need to have evidence that a pupil demonstrates attainment of all of the statements within that standard and all the statements in the preceding standard(s).

JD

Teacher Assessment Teachers must base their teacher assessment

judgement on a broad range of evidence from across the curriculum for each pupil.

The evidence for reading must include the KS1 English reading test, which does not focus solely on the key aspects listed in the interim framework.

The evidence for writing must include the KS1 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test.

Teacher Assessment

The deadline for primary schools to submit teacher assessments at key stage 1 and 2 has been moved back to 30 June 2016.

The date for submitting teacher assessment judgements has been moved back to give teachers more time to submit their teacher assessments. The change is for this year only and has been made in recognition of the unique circumstances for teachers working with a new assessment framework to new standards.

Moderation therefore, will take place before Teacher Assessments are submitted

Reporting to parents

We will include results from the national curriculum tests in our annual reports to parents.

We will report your child’s scaled score and whether or not they have met the expected standard, working at a greater depth within the expected standard or working towards the expected standard (WTS)

If your child is below WTS, you will receive information about whether your child is at working at an interim pre-key stage standard or working below key stage standards.
