Year 4 Home Based Learning Passport

Phase 3 – Week 5 – 18.5.20

The aims of this Home Based Learning Passport is to enable children to continue with their learning whilst

there is a period of school closure. All activities are optional, but are designed to provide structure and

focus for each day. Activities are planned by teachers, based on the National Curriculum expectations

for their year group. Activities have been divided into days of the week for English and maths. This is to

help you plan your week and also to ensure that for parents of children who may be in school, they

know the activities that have been covered. If the school is closed for a number of weeks, a new Home

Based Learning Passport will be uploaded to the school website each Sunday by 6.00pm.

Please do not worry if your child becomes stuck and you cannot explain it to them. All children find

elements of learning challenging at times. An exercise book has been sent home with your child for

them to complete any activities and this can be returned to school after the period of closure.

Monday This week’s challenge comes from White Rose Maths and Classroom Kitchen! Visit this

link (and find the Friday challenge on w/c 4 May). Watch the video and have a go at

making Clue-Dough Carrot Cake using your knowledge of weighing different

quantities of ingredients and measuring in grams. Remember 1kg=1000g. You can also

transform your cake into a game by decorating it with either a picture or cutting it up

to make a jigsaw puzzle. The recipe is displayed below.

If you don’t have access to the internet or the ingredients, or just fancy a challenge

while eating your yummy cake, try these tangram puzzles. A tangram is an ancient

Chinese geometric puzzle where a square is cut into seven pieces that can be

arranged to create different figures. The pieces must not overlap! You may remember

that we completed an activity similar to this on our Ancient Greek day. Remember to

shout ‘eureka’ when you have finished the puzzle or share a picture of your

achievements and cakes on Twitter (@stamfordgreen #StamfordGreenPics).

Step 1: Cut out the rainbow coloured tangram (attached after the family challenge)

and muddle up the pieces. Or alternatively you can use:

https://www.abcya.com/games/tangrams

Step 2: Start with an easy challenge and recreate the house picture below using all 7

pieces.

Step 3: Challenge yourself further by recreating the fish, camel and man in a boat

shapes using all 7 pieces. This time we haven’t shown you where to place the different

shapes!

Tuesday Snakes and Ladders

You will need the following, which are attached after the family challenge:

• The Snakes and Ladders Board Game

• Dice

• Counters

How to play

1. Players take it in turns to roll the dice.

2. The player with the highest number goes first.

3. The player with the second highest goes second and so on.

4. When it is their turn, the players move their counter the number of spaces shown on

the dice and answer the calculation they land on.

5. If the answer is correct, play resumes as usual:

-landing on a snake’s head – the player’s counter slides down;

-landing at the bottom of a ladder means the player’s counter climbs up.

6. If the answer given to the calculation is incorrect, the player misses a go.

7. The first player to reach the finish is the winner!

If you are really confident with your times tables, you could then move on to use the

answers board and play in reverse – instead of saying 8 x 8 = 64, if you land on 64 you

could say the factors that make that amount, in this case 8 X 8 or you could say 64

divide by 8 equals 8.

Wednesday Problem 1

Here is some data collection. Record the data into the frequency table by using a

tally.

Page 4: Year 4 Home Based Learning Passport Phase 3 Week 5 18.5 · Phase 3 – Week 5 – 18.5.20 The aims of this Home Based Learning Passport is to enable children to continue with their

Problem 2

Green class wanted to find out which was the most popular pet. They asked a group

of people what pets they had. Each person had one pet. The results are shown below.

R = rabbit D = dog F = fish C = cat G = Guinea pig

G D R G C R R G C F

D G F R D C D C G F

G R D C G R G C F R

Create a frequency table to show this data clearly then answer the questions below.

a) What was the total number of people asked about their pets?

b) What was the most popular pet?

c) What was the least popular pet?

d) How many more people had rabbits than fish?

e) How many more people had guinea pigs than dogs?

Problem 3

Collect your own data to later put into a frequency table. What could you explore?

Here are some suggestions if you can’t think of any.

➢ Which Lego colour appears most in my collection?

➢ What is my family’s favourite…animal, colour, chocolate, fruit etc. (Maybe you

could phone other family members or friends to add to your data – ask your

parents before you use the phone.)

➢ Types of flowers in the garden or on my daily walk.

➢ Types of insects I spot in an hour.

Thursday Countdown!

How close can you get to the target number? Each card can only be used once but it

may not be necessary to use all the cards. You can use any operation (addition,

subtraction, multiplication and division) to help you reach the target number. There

may be more than one possible solution.

You can also play a version of this countdown game on the computer. Please make

sure an adult is with you when you are on the internet. https://nrich.maths.org/6499

Discuss with someone the answers to the questions below. There is no right or wrong

answer if you can justify why you have come to your reason and base it on what you

see in the picture.

1. What happened before this picture?

2. How did the house get on top of the dragon? Who tied it onto the dragon’s back?

3. Is the dragon happy about this?

4. How do the girl and the dragon know one another?

5. Why is the girl sitting on top of the house and not inside it?

6. Is anyone else inside the house?

7. Where did the kites come from?

8. Where are the girl and the dragon going?

9. Why are they travelling in this way?

10. Give this picture an interesting title.

Thursday Use this link below to help you write your own recount. There are short clips and time to

practise as well as a reminder of the features of a recount.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrgq2sg Remember to ask an adult before you

use the internet.

If you don’t have access to the internet, then we have listed the features below.

Features of a recount

1. Write in the first person (I, me, my) because it happened to you.

For example: I felt excited.

2. Use the past tense because it has already happened.

For example: It was the biggest fish I had ever seen!

3. Write in chronological order (this means the order in which events actually

happened). Use adverbs of time to show this, such as: firstly, next, then and finally.

4. Use descriptive words and expanded noun phrases to help your reader imagine

what happened.

For example: The huge, silver fish was shiny and slippery.

5. Focus on the most exciting parts. You don’t need to include all the boring details.

6. Write in paragraphs.

Write your own recount of an event, a trip, an enjoyable day, your life so far, a hobby

or a funny story from your life. Aim to write at least three paragraphs with at least five

sentences in each.

Friday

Create alliterative sentences about different objects around the house. Think of as

many words as you can starting with the same letter as the object, for example dishes.

Danny delays doing dirty dishes. Can you find an object for every letter of the

alphabet and then write a sentence with alliteration?

PE Dancing is a great way to get fit, while creating happy feel good hormones

(endorphins). Your challenge for this week is to choose a piece of lively music and

create your own dance to the music. How does your dance reflect your chosen

music? Think about aspects such as tempo and mood. What style of dance will you

choose to use? Ballroom, tap, hip-hop? The list goes on.

If you need some inspiration or find making up your own dance tricky why not follow

the links below and learn a dance with Oti Mabuse, from Strictly Come Dancing.

Values

Who has shown courage? It could be someone close to you or someone famous.

Write about the person and how they have shown this value (courage). It could be

written as a paragraph, fact file, think of questions and interview a person or be

creative and turn it into a story or poem.

Awareness

Week

This week it is Mental Health Awareness week, and the theme this year is kindness.

We know from our MindUp lessons how important it is to be kind. When we are kind, we

are rewarded with a release of dopamine in our brain, a neurotransmitter, which plays

a role in producing and regulating positive feelings, such as pleasure, hopefulness,

Page 11: Year 4 Home Based Learning Passport Phase 3 Week 5 18.5 · Phase 3 – Week 5 – 18.5.20 The aims of this Home Based Learning Passport is to enable children to continue with their

Kindness

optimism, and a keen interest. Being kind to others means they feel good and you feel

good too!

Create your own kindness calendar for the next 7 days. Draw yourself a template and

decide on at least one act of kindness you will do for someone else and an act of

kindness for yourself. There is an example below and some suggested ideas to help

you.

Being kind to others:

➢ Sit with someone who looks lonely.

➢ Have a conversation with a loved one.

➢ Ask a family member if they would like a drink.

➢ Share a snack with a family member.

➢ Write your teacher, or someone else you appreciate, a note or a poem about why

you like them.

➢ Clear the table after dinner without being asked.

➢ Pick up three pieces of litter – remember to wash your hands after!

➢ Draw a picture for a loved one.

Being kind to yourself:

➢ Do some gentle exercise.

➢ Read your favourite book or poem.

➢ Watch your favourite film.

➢ Go for a walk.

➢ Play with your pet.

➢ Write down 3 things you are grateful for.

➢ Spend some time in nature.

➢ Have a dance party.

➢ Wear your favourite outfit.

➢ Dress up as your favourite character from a book or film.

Please share your acts of kindness on the school twitter feed #stamfordgreenpics.

telling you about what they have been up to. You will find their letters when you login

to Google Classroom. The guidance on how to access Google Classroom has been

emailed to your parents and is also on the school website under ‘School Closure’.

Your task is write a reply to your teacher as they would love to hear from you. You

should handwrite a letter and then ask an adult to photograph your letter and then

help you to upload it to your teacher on Google Classroom. Your teacher will be able

to read your letter and give you feedback about what you have written.
