Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week beg: 01.06.20 Hi Year 5! We hope you’re all doing really well and that you enjoyed your half-term. Last week, we started making teaching videos to go with the activities in the home learning packs. We received some really positive feedback about these and so we will continue to upload them to Seesaw each week. Some of you said that it was a little tricky to access the videos because you had to logout of Seesaw and then login in with a new password. To make this easier, you will now be able to see all the videos on your journal so you can just use your original Seesaw login. You can also find all the videos for a particular week using the folders in your Seesaw. Here is how you find them: Step 1 Click on ‘Journal’. Step 2 Click on the folder symbol.

Year 5 Home Learning Activities – Week beg: 01.06.20 

Hi Year 5! 

We hope you’re all doing really well and that you enjoyed your half-term. 

Last week, we started making teaching videos to go with the activities in the home learning packs. We received some really positive feedback about these and so we will continue to upload them to Seesaw each week. 

Some of you said that it was a little tricky to access the videos because you had to logout of Seesaw and then login in with a new password. To make this easier, you will now be able to see all the videos on your journal so you can just use your original Seesaw login. 

You can also find all the videos for a particular week using the folders in your Seesaw. Here is how you find them:

Other reading activities: 

● Find a funny place to read a book - it could be up a tree, under the bed or in a den. Take a photo and post it on Seesaw. 

● Find ten awesome adjectives in the text you have read and then use them to make a crossword. 

● Write down any unfamiliar words from the chapter you have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary or reading around the sentence.

You need to add to your character list from last week. Which new characters have entered the story since then? 

 

Art: Become a costume designer! 

This week your task is to choose one of your favourite characters from the play and design the costume you would like them to wear in a production of The Tempest. 

You can sketch and design it first. Then, if you would like to, you can actually create it using paper, pieces of material and anything else that you can find at home to bring your ideas to life

Aim: To divide numbers using a written method and to understand remainders. 

  For example: 365 ÷ 7 = 52 remainder 1 

 Remember when you divide you are always using your times tables facts so it’s very important that you learn and can remember your times tables! Keep practising using TT Rockstars and if you know that there is a particular times table you find tricky keep focusing on it until you get better and better!

Activity 3: Using your answers from activity 2. Solve these problems. Show your working out. You may need to use other operations, like addition and subtraction to help you to solve them. 

1. How many more grams of flour than salt did you use in the bread?  

2. Did you use more fennel or garlic in the soup recipe? Prove your answer by showing your working out.  

3. Convert how many grams of hazelnuts you need into kg.  

4. Put the ingredients for the Maccu Soup in order, from lightest to heaviest. 

5. For which recipe do you need the most weight in ingredients. Prove your answer by showing your calculations.

You might find this multiplication grid helpful to help you solve the problems but try and work out the answer yourself first then check on the grid IF you need to.

If I know that 4 x 6 = 24 then I know that 40 x 6 = 240.

Activity 5 - Let’s reason and problem solve - Mathematics is a creative subject. It involves spotting patterns, making connections, and finding new ways of looking at things. Creative mathematicians play with ideas, draw pictures, have the courage to experiment and ask good questions.  

The problem this week is called: Shapes Times Shapes  This is a problem from Nrich, in which you can practise your times tables facts, 

but in a way that needs you to reason too.  The task may look impossible to solve at first but I know you will feel curious 

about finding a solution. The problem also shows you the idea of how a symbol (in this case a shape) can represent a number.

P.E.  

Our focus for PE this summer term is athletics and cricket. This week we will be thinking about athletics and sprinting!   Activity: How far can you run in 5 seconds? Get someone to time you. Can you sprint again and beat your own distance? How far can you run over shorter and longer lengths of time?  Try running for 10 seconds, how far can you go? What about 20 seconds? You could record your results in a table. Set up sprinting races against your family. Who can run the furthest distance in 5 seconds? 10 seconds? 20 seconds? Record your sprinting and upload to Seesaw. We would love to see you sprinting like Usain Bolt and Dina Asher-Smith.    Other ideas:
