Concept CurriculumDESS+ CurriculumTerm 1 – “Survival’’Key Questions:What does it mean to survive?Does survival mean the same thing to

different people? Is it sometimes better to not survive? Why do some people survive and others

don’t?What affects a person’s ability to

survive?

Literacy

As part of our themed learning we will be exploring documentaries, information texts and eye-witness accounts of manmade and natural disasters throughout History, in particular the sinking of ‘Titanic’. The children will produce and present ‘live’ broadcasts of these events to develop their speaking and listening skills and will be encouraged to write a range of different recounts, including diaries and journalistic reports.

Literacy

The children will also investigate the purpose of survival guides, manuals and leaflets that explain what to do in specific emergencies. They will create their own version of these in the form of an ‘ebook’ on the Ipad.

Literacy Our shared text this term will be Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo and the children will engage in a range of drama and writing activities to support their understanding of character development and plot. They will also write haiku about natural disasters. After finding out about polar survival, the children will design their own survival kit and will write advertising pitches to present to Adrian Hayes during his visit in November. They will also find out about one of the greatest survivors of all time: Ernest Shackleton, and his race to the Antarctic to write diary and journal entries.

Literacy expectations Spellings will be taught each week and spelling rules and key words will be sent home and regularly assessed.

Children are expected to join their handwriting in accordance with the Kingston cursive scheme.

Guided reading and visits to the library will take place weekly. Children are expected to read at home for an average of 20 minutes a day. Reading should be recorded in the home/school diaries.

NumeracyThis term, in streamed groups, we will be extending the children’s understanding and knowledge of problem solving and mental mathematical strategies as well as securing their knowledge of the four calculations and written methods. This will be achieved through a variety of approaches including the ‘DESS passport’, speedy sums, investigation activities, interactive games and ICT.

Thematic Maths

The children will also be encouraged to use and apply their mathematical skills and knowledge in ‘real life’ situations and experiences.

Numeracy Expectations

The children will be taught in streamed groups to ensure they are being challenged appropriately at their level. There will be Maths home learning tasks set on www.mymaths.co.uk and the children will be reminded of their personal log in details and passwords. The children will also complete a mental mathematics test once a week.

Science

In Science this term we will be exploring and comparing life cycles of plants and animals; researching and presenting our findings. We will learn about how our survival is directly linked to the bee population. The children will also be investigating different forces, including making parachutes to learn about the effects of air resistance.

Themed Learning Art, DT, ICT, History, Geography

History will focus on the cause and effect of key natural and man-made disasters from the past, with a particular focus on Titanic. We will compare eye witness recounts and expert analyses to determine what exactly happened, what it would have been like to survive, who may have been to blame for the survival rates and what we can learn for the future.

Themed Learning Art, DT, ICT, History, Geography

Geography will focus on the cause and effect of natural disasters this term, including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, avalanches, wild fires, hurricanes, etc. The children will each choose one phenomena to investigate, creating information texts on the subject. These will then be presented using ‘prezi’ in ICT. This will also link directly to their work on creating survival guides.

Themed Learning Art, DT, ICT, History, Geography

In art lessons, the children will be exploring how to use printing to make different effects. They will develop this further by creating various representations of Hokusai’s land and seascapes, using different media, including collage.

Themed LearningArt, DT, Geography, History

Survival Day will focus on a range of different activities including: first aid training, shelter building, construction of rafts and orienteering.
