Last week, well, she went to a late night party. Somewhere in town, I don’t know where exactly and it ended very late. About two o’ clock.
It was the same most evenings Sam picked up Becky and drove his wreck to the parking area two miles outside town.
When Jack turned around, he saw another white shape drifting over the bridge towards him.

Your first task is to work your way through the word
list. Can you:
•Identify the silent letter.
•Find/think of 3 more words which have the same
silent letter and write them down.
•Use each new word to write a different sentence.
Challenge: Can you find a pattern in any of the words
with the same silent letter?
When you have finished
this task, send to your
teacher for marking.
What might this quote mean?
One of the reasons that we have silent letters in some of our words is that they used to be pronounced. Silent letters also come when English borrows words
from other languages. And some silent letters come because people made spelling mistakes when writing was first printed. Spelling is always a challenge!
Silent letters are the
ghosts of
pronunciations past.Marc Ettlinger – Linguistics PhD
