ASSISTANT PINCIPAL’S NEWS
It’s a (Christmas) wrap!
Michael Grose
It is that time of year again!
The school year is almost over. The Christmas holidays
are just around the corner. ‘Where did the last twelve
months go?’
Children generally want to plunge into holidays,
leaving schoolwork, timetables and teachers behind.
That is only natural.
Before you get too far into holiday mode, consider how
you’ll round out the year, and bring it to a close.
If your child is finishing primary or secondary school
then there will be ‘farewell dinners’ that signal the end
of one phase of their school lives. The greater
importance given to these occasions over the last few
years is recognition of the human need to bring closure
to one stage of life and prepare for the next.
Children of all ages benefit from parental recognition
of their achievements and successes as it sets the stage
for the coming school year.
Here are a few ideas to help you close off the old year
to prepare for the year ahead.
1. Discuss the highlights of the year
Ask children to name their highlights, favourite times
or most memorable moments of the year just gone.
Use age appropriate language and questions that will
open them up. At the year’s end ask your children to
rate their year from 1 to 5 and to identify their best
memory, their favourite subject and something new
they encountered.
2. Celebrate improvement and success
Identify one or two areas where your children
exceeded, improved or overcame some challenges.
Broaden the focus away from just academic
performance and recognise achievement in social, sport
or arts areas. It is important for children who struggle
academically to understand that you value success in a
variety of areas.
3. Look forward
It may be beneficial to give your children a chance to
talk about some aspect of the year that they didn’t like,
found difficult or challenging. Try to limit this type of
discussion and point your children toward a better
future next year.
4. Relax
It is time for children to set the previous school year
aside, put their feet up and chill out over the school
break. Remember, if the previous year wasn’t one of
the best, the five to six week break will help make a
fresh start next year.
So it’s a wrap! The slate has been wiped clean. Enjoy
the break and see you next year!

Problem Solving in Maths
In order to encourage further problem solving at home,
I will include a weekly problem in the newsletter. Each
week a correct entry will win a fantastic prize.
Just write the answer on a piece of paper with your
name and grade and drop it into Mr Kent’s office each
Friday.
Answer to Mr K’s Problem No 37 - How many

10 000 – Well done to Rose Dhillon 2S
Mr K’s Problem No 38
As Santa and his reindeer took off into the sky, they
were traveling at 431 kilometres per hour. The farther
away they got the faster they would go. The Sky
Officer measured Santa traveling at the speed of 900
kilometres per hour. How much faster was Santa
traveling than when he first took off into the air?
