CLASS INFORMATION
WELCOME TO YEAR 6 (MRS MCDONALD)
As your child transitions from Lower Key Stage Two into Upper Key Stage Two, we further encourage and promote the importance of their developing independence. We expect continuous high standards of behaviour and remind the children that it is their responsibility to look after and respect their property both at home and in school.
YEAR 6 CLASS TIMETABLE
YEAR 6 PE
Although PE is scheduled for Monday afternoons, please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every day as timetabling requirements and weather restrictions may affect when your child has their PE sessions each week. Also, please remember that swimming lessons will be on a Thursday afternoon during the autumn term and so your child will need to bring in their swimming costume, towel etc. on that day. If you would like them to wear goggles, the leisure centre insist on written permission which should be handed to the teacher before the lessons begin. To ensure no clothing gets lost it is extremely helpful if you label all of your child’s items (including their school uniform) so that they don’t get misplaced.
YEAR 6 FINAL REMINDERS
Please ensure that your child brings their reading book and Reading Record with them every day (small book bags are preferable due to size constraints in the children’s lockers).
It is vital that every child has a named water bottle with them in school every day.

HOMEWORK

HOMEWORK
There are five activities that we ask the children to complete as part of their homework tasks: Read at least five times a week and comment in their Reading Record (with at least one parent/carer
signature or comment per week); Learn the knowledge from their termly Topic Knowledge Sheet (tested in the final week of each term); Complete a half-termly project in their Independent Learning Journal; Complete the reading comprehension homework (marked together in school every Friday); Learn the facts from their half-termly Maths Knowledge Sheet (tested every Friday).
For more information about these five homework areas, please see the additional guidance sections continued in the ‘Homework’ section of this Parent Pack (below).
READING RECORDS
Every child should be reading at home for at least 20-30 minutes a day. As a whole school, we expect the children to read at least five times every week. In Year 6, the children are old enough to write their own comments in their Reading Records but please ensure an adult has at least commented or signed their signature once every week. Please write a ‘H’ in a circle to indicate that your child has read at home. These are checked by an adult every day.
TOPIC KNOWLEDGE SHEETS
Every term, you will receive a Topic Knowledge Sheet so that your child can learn a range of facts linked to the Geography and History objectives that we will be learning during the following two half terms. There will then be a test on these facts in the final week of the term (the week before the Christmas break/Easter break/Summer break).
INDEPENDENT LEARNING JOURNALS
Sitting alongside the Topic Knowledge Sheet is your child’s Independent Learning Journal (ILJ). In the first half term, the children should use that term’s Topic theme (see previous page) and any facts from the Topic Knowledge Sheet to complete at least one piece of work per week in their journals. If the children are struggling for ideas, they can use the guidance sheet in the front of their journals. Once completed, these should be brought back into school by the Wednesday of the last week of each half term so that they can be marked and returned back to your child before the half term break. During the second half of each term, the children are free to choose their own topic for their journals. These are often based around the children’s hobbies. If you have any further questions, please feel free to come and see your child’s class teacher.
READING COMPREHENSION
Every week, your child will come home with a reading text and comprehension questions to complete by the following Friday. Please ensure this is done and brought back into school within the week so that the class can go through the class and any misconceptions together in the classroom on Friday afternoon.

MATHS KNOWLEDGE SHEETS (AUTUMN TERM)
Every half term, you will receive a Maths Knowledge Sheet so that your child can learn ten facts at home in readiness for a test each Wednesday. We will have practised some of that week’s facts with your child earlier in the week to further support them with their home learning. At the end of each week, your child will complete a grid in the back of their Reading Record so that you can keep track of how many facts they are getting correct. An overview of the Year 6 Autumn Term facts are below with an accompanying example of the type of question your child’s teacher will ask.
