Description of location
Mount Everest is located in Nepal – in Asia. The mountain is part of the Himalayan mountain range.
Bora Bora is an island in a group. It is part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia – east of Australia. They are located in the Pacific Ocean. The island is located about 230 km northwest of Papeete
Description of how it is used by people
Tourism is now the largest cash generating industry in the country. Current GNP per capita is $US 220. (UK is $US 17,800). People visit to region to go climbing and hiking as well as admiring the beautiful landscape.
Today the island is almost entirely dependent on tourism. Thirty years ago, Hotel Bora Bora built the first over-the-water bungalows on stilts over the lagoon and today, over-water bungalows are a standard feature of most Bora Bora resorts. Many local people still fish to earn a living.
Comparison of the two places
Mount Everest is on the mainland. Whereas Bora Bora is an island. Mount Everest is higher. It is 8850 metres above sea level. On the other hand, Bora Bora is only 1 metre above sea level. Finally, Mount Everest has a very cold climate. However, Bora Bora is much warmer and has a hot climate.
Explanation of the impact of human activity
Firstly, there are many visitors to the region. This means that many trees are being chopped down to build lodges for people to stay in. As a result, the hillsides are becoming unstable. Therefore landslides are becoming more common. Secondly, the tourism industry buys in western food which is expected by the tourists. The guides can now afford to buy this food. Therefore, their diet has improved. As a result, the life expectancy of many involved in tourism is increasing.
Firstly, sewage from resorts is often simply pumped into lagoons. As a result, the quality of the water can be poor. This means that fish stocks can be reduced. Secondly, the building of hotels has led to more people visiting the islands. As a result, some local people have got new jobs from tourism. This means that they can improve their lifestyle
