Spring Term Geography I.S. TaskWithout Geography you are nowhere!

Challenge 1

With this challenge you will have no excuses for being late to school. The

Geographer wants you to produce a map which shows your journey from home to Marden High School. It should also include all of the main landmarks along the route. This isn’t going to be no pirate style, x marks the spot, drawn in 5 minutes type of map though. Far from it, this map is going to a thoroughly researched, as near to scale as possible, ordnance survey type of map.

I am The Geographer and i order you to complete one of my fantastic challenges!

For your first Geography I.S. task we are going to focus your work upon the wonderful world of maps.

In Geography it’s vital we know where we are, how to get there and importantly what’s there along the way. The challenges that have been set for you to choose from will allow you explore these themes.

Look at the following challenges closely and decide which challenge is for you.

Page 2: Year 7 Geogaphy IS

On the next few pages you will find all of the resources and assistance that you will need to produce your map.

A good starting point for your map would be:

www.mapzone.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/mapzone/index.html

You should take the time to explore how O.S. maps are drawn and how they can be used. The link below features all of the key O.S. symbols that you may or may not require.

www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/docs/legends/25k-raster-legend.pdf

Another excellent resource which could be extremely helpful is google maps.

www.maps.google.co.uk

On the next page you should draw the map showing the route from your house to school. Remember to include all key landmarks, features, etc and to mark on any O.S. relevant symbols that you pass. Try to draw to scale and make sure that you include a scale bar on your map. Your map should also be coloured.

Look! A

scale bar!

You can search

your street here!

Change the view here!

You can even search for directions

and it will show you different routes!

Why not try the street view!

Challenge 2

For this challenge you must help The Geographer’s friends, Janet and Chuck from Arkansas, America, navigate their way around North Tyneside by catching a ferry from North Shields and a train from Newcastle Central station.

The problem is that they really want to use public transport so they can see and meet genuine Geordies. Janet and Chuck will tell you more:

Howdy folks! I just love you Geordies. You guys are awesome!

We’re going to need timetables, maps and routes Chucky

Use these!www.arrivabus.co.uk/north-east/www.nexus.org.uk/mymetrowww.simplygo.com/view-all-timetables/

Page 5: Year 7 Geogaphy IS

- Plan TWO routes from Marden High School - One to the ferry terminal in North Shields and another to Newcastle Central station- Both journeys should use public transport- Collect evidence such as timetables, costs, maps and routes to use as evidence. You should stick any evidence you gather or print out in the spaces provided- Use the websites on the previous page to help you plan your journeys- Complete the tasks on the following pages

If you have no internet access, see

your teacher!

Hey Chucky, that sure was a

lovely route that our driver took us!

Janet, I can’t believe how easy it

was to get a ticket...and so

cheap too!
