Welcome to St Clare’s College where we have been welcoming new students for 50 years!

St Clare’s College is an inclusive, caring, Catholic community where learning is valued and students are given opportunities to grow in all dimensions of their life. Modelled on the life and teachings of Jesus and inspired by the example of St Clare in its policies and practices, the College is committed to providing a safe and empowering environment for the students. The Pastoral Care Program promotes the spiritual and social development of students as well as supporting their learning needs. The social justice, volunteering and outreach programs are key focus areas for the St Clare’s community.

There are many opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular activities that complement the academic program including debating, drama, dance, music, a wide range of sports and leadership development programs. Student leadership has a high profile in the College through the Student Representative Council and the strong House system.

In order to cater for the needs of all students, the College offers a strong academic program as well as a number of Vocational courses in Years 11 and 12. In Years 7 and 8 the Foundation Studies Program enables all students to experience a wide range of courses to provide a sound basis for making future academic decisions.

The College is fortunate to have a most professional staff who have the best interest of the students at heart. The staff maintain their currency in teaching and learning by attending professional learning workshops and conferences on a yearly basis.

We look forward to a long association with our new families and hope that your time at St Clare’s College is enjoyable and rewarding.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING WHAT IS A UNIT OUTLINE AND WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?At the beginning of each semester for each subject you will receive a detailed Unit Outline which includes:

• Content Overview• Goals• Outcomes • Assessment Tasks • Due Dates

Helpful tip: Copy the Assessment Tasks and Due Dates from your Unit Outline into your Student Organiser and a calendar at home. This will help you stay on top of when your assignments are due. All of your Unit Outlines will be available on Studywiz.

WHAT IS A RUBRIC?With each assignment you will receive a rubric. Your teacher will use the rubric to assess your work. The rubric is given out at the same time as the assignment, so it is a good indication of what you should include in your task. Once your work has been marked, the rubric should explain why you received the results you obtained.

WHEN DO I GET MY REPORTS AND WHAT WILL THEY LOOK LIKE?Mid-Semester Reports are issued at the end of Term 1 and Term 3 to let you and your parents know how you are progressing. At the end of each Semester you will receive a comprehensive report which indicates your overall results and includes a comment from all of your teachers.

If you have shown outstanding achievement or effort you may also receive an award.

WHEN ARE PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS?The precise dates will be written on the College Calendar, however, they are generally held in the last two weeks of Term 1 and Term 3. Parents can book interviews online in the week prior to the Parent Teacher Interviews.

Your parents can contact your teacher by phone or email at any time if they have any questions or concerns.

Emailing staff members is easy if you know their name. The format for email addresses is: [email protected]

ATTENDANCEABSENCESThe College will notify parents/guardians if a student is absent by a SMS message. This number will be the mobile number listed for Guardian ‘A’ on the enrolment form. Parents are asked to contact the College if they would like to make a change or add another number to their records.

Parents are asked to explain all absences and lateness in writing by using the Parent Notes To Explain Absence pads provided or use the ones at the back of their Student Organiser. Additional Absence Notepads can be collected from Student Administration or a copy of the Absence Note can be found on the College website under the Publication Section.

LATENESSIf a student arrives late to school she must sign in at Student Administration and issued with a Late Pass. A note explaining her lateness must be written by a parent/guardian and given to Student Administration the following day.

LEAVE DURING THE DAYIf a student leaves during the day for an appointment she must:

• Bring a note from her parent/guardian to Student Administration who will issue her with a Leave Pass.

• Show the pass and sign out at Student Administration.

• Sign back in at Student Administration upon her return.

EXTENDED LEAVEParents are required to request Approval of Leave from the Principal if the student will be out of the College for five (5) days or more. You may send a letter to the Principal or email [email protected]

SENIOR STUDENTSAll senior students are expected to be at school for morning pastoral care class each day.

With parental approval (given in writing by parent or guardian at the beginning of each school year), Years 11 and 12 students may leave the school grounds for study purposes after 1.00pm if they do not have scheduled lessons.

Year 11 students are not permitted to leave at 1.00pm during Term 1 of Year 11.

SENIOR LEAVELeave for holidays will not normally be approved in Years 11 and 12.

To meet ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies requirements and assist our students to plan, the College has a system for senior leave requests. A form has been designed that enables a student to seek leave from the College and provide the Principal with information about how she will manage scheduled assessment tasks and missed course content during the absence.

Prior to requesting leave, students are required to discuss their assessment/s and missed course content with their teachers. They can type all information directly into the Senior Leave Request and Assessment Arrangements Form. The form is printed for signature by individual teachers and a parent or carer prior to submitting to Mr Carroll for his consideration.

Once the leave is approved and the student and parent informed, the form will be given to the Student Attendance Officer who will record the details and inform the student’s teachers.

Students or parents can obtain the form from Mrs Leonie Kelly, PA to the Principal, or it is on the College Website under the Essential Information/Publications tab. Mrs Kelly’s contact details are: 6260 9405 or [email protected]

LIBRARYWHAT CAN I USE THE RESOURCE CENTRE FOR?The Teacher Librarians will run Orientation Sessions to help you learn the location of all the resources and equipment, including the photocopier and printer that you will need for your school work.

Each student can borrow a maximum of ten books at a time. There is a very large fiction section with a range of popular authors and books: Paul Jennings, Robert Muchamore, John Marsden, Meg Cabot, Harry Potter, Alex Rider, The Spiderwick Chronicles and many more.

The library is a pleasant place to sit and read silently out of class hours. It is not a place for socialising with your friends.

WHEN CAN I USE IT?The Library is open to all students from 8.00am - 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am- 4.00pm on Friday.

The school rules apply in the Library as they do in the rest of the school. We also ask that students leave food and drink outside the area to help preserve our resources. There is an expectation that school computers are used for school based work and that games are not played on them.

The Library is a fun place to be if you treat people and resources responsibly, respectfully and safely.

WHERE TO GO WHEN YOU ARE STUCKOne of the best things about belonging to the St Clare’s Community is that there are always lots of people willing to help with the little, and sometimes bigger, problems. There is someone to help with everything, whether it is a difficulty related to your Maths homework or a concern about a friend.

WHO CAN I TALK TO IF I NEED A HAND?The following people are available at school to support you:

PASTORAL CARE TEACHERYour Pastoral Care Teacher is your counsellor, guide and mentor.

The role of the Pastoral Care Teacher is to:

• monitor attendance, conduct, appearance, homework and progress• counsel (advise/motivate) students regarding program choices, progress and general welfare• consult subject teachers on individual student progress, conduct and welfare• communicate with home regarding student programs, performance, welfare, problems, etc• advise Year Coordinator on problems and special circumstances with respect to individual students.

PASTORAL COORDINATORThe Year Coordinator is responsible for the entire Year group. It is their job to develop positive morale in the teachers and students in the Year level and to foster and maintain an atmosphere of genuine pastoral care of all the students. Students can drop by to see the Year Coordinator outside of class time or with the permission of their class teacher.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL (PASTORAL CARE)The Assistant Principal is responsible for the pastoral care and discipline of all students in the school. It is the role of the Assistant Principal to ensure that all students are safe, happy and productive. Students can drop by to see the Assistant Principal outside of class time or with the permission of their class teacher.

SUBJECT TEACHERSSubject teachers are always willing to give you extra help with any aspect of what is being covered in class. If you are having trouble understanding the concepts, tackling assignments, meeting deadlines, issues with other students or needing an extra challenge, please speak to them so that they can help.

CURRICULUM COORDINATORSEach subject has a Curriculum Coordinator who is responsible for the curriculum and wellbeing of students in their subject area. Students are always welcome to approach the Curriculum Coordinator if they have concerns about a subject. Issues such as extensions for assignments or your assessment are just a couple of the things that they may be able to help you with.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL (CURRICULUM & ASSESSMENT)

The Assistant Principal is responsible for the effective delivery of curriculum throughout the College as well as assessment and reporting. Parents and students are welcome to discuss matters relating to curriculum and assessment.

SCHOOL SUPPORT TEAM (SST)

The School Support Team teachers will be able to help you if you are having trouble keeping up with the academic demands of Year 7. Often it is just a matter of getting you started on an assignment or helping you to revise for a test. See Mrs Millar in the Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) if you need assistance. The FLC is open every lunchtime for any student. There is always a teacher on duty to assist you with anything you are having difficulty with, including assignments. This is a very valuable resource!

Students with disabilities or gifts and talents are extended and supported in mainstream classrooms. The support and extension provided to students with special needs may consist of one or more of the following:

• modified assessment• differentiated curriculum• individual education programs• Teacher-Assistant time• collaborative teaching and learning strategies• computer technology.

The SST also offers specialised units and courses that are designed to help students develop more effective learning, social and organisational skills. Students with learning difficulties or students who are experiencing difficulties with their studies are encouraged to access homework assistance in the SST room at lunchtimes. The SST also runs a Cross Age Tutoring Program for students requiring extra tuition.

FIRST AIDThe parents of students with particular medical conditions (eg allergies etc.) are required to lodge a Management Plan in writing to the Principal. This will ensure the appropriate management and care of students whilst attending the College.

Students requiring prescription medication at school (including Paracetamol), are required to provide the First Aid Officer with the medication clearly marked with her name and a letter from her parent/guardian. This letter must specify the dosage, the time when the medication is to be taken and the authority for the First Aid Officer to provide the medication to the student.

1. At the beginning of 2014 you will participate in a Network Orientation Session in which you will be guided through everything you need to know about the school network.

2. To log in you need to enter your Student Key and Password. Again, you will be given these at the start of the year.

HOW DO I ACCESS MY FILES WHEN I AM AT SCHOOL?You will need to use your Student Key and Password to access your files at school. Enter your Student Key and the Password you use to log on to the computer at school. Remember passwords are case sensitive!

HOW DO I ACCESS MY FILES WHEN I AM AT HOME?To access your files from the College network you need to use the following procedure:

1. Access the College website

www.stclaresc.act.edu.au

2. Click on NetStorage at the top of the page.

3. Enter your Student Key and Password.

4. The files will download onto your home computer. You will need to save the file on your computer or USB.

WHAT IS STUDYWIZ?Studywiz is our school’s electronic learning platform. You can access everything on Studywiz either from school or home. Your teachers will load your Unit Assessment Outlines and Assessment Items onto Studywiz for each of your subjects. Your login and password will be the same as your Student Key and Password. You will learn more about Studywiz in your Network Orientation Program at the beginning of 2014.

WHAT IS EMAIL ETIQUETTE?Remember to be polite and appropriate when using the school email. Any swearing, nasty comments or bullying is not accepted. School email is filtered and there are consequences for inappropriate emails. Students are not permitted to send whole school or year group emails.

WHAT DO I DO IF THE COMPUTER OR PRINTER FAILS?Make sure that you have saved your work carefully! USB storage devices should be used only as a backup; you should also save your work on the Student Share Drive or your computer at home.

If an assignment is due and your printer has failed, you could use a printer in the Library before school or you could email the task to your teacher. Make sure that you check with your teacher that they received the task though. It is not acceptable to request an extension for an assessment task just because your printer or USB failed.

IT staff are available to help with IT problems at school when necessary. You need to make sure you have a note from your teacher before seeing them.
