TASK – Make a grass head
Lesson – Science – What do seeds need to grow?
Task – Make a grass head
Traditionally, many Gypsies and travellers worked on farms, for example, fruit picking, harvesting
and planting.
First up – Watch this video to find out what seeds and plants need to grow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RXVhiUnTA8
List the 5 key things that plants need – using the video to help you.

You will need:
• Old tights or 1 old sock
• Seeds- Grass seed is ideal but you can use whatever seeds you’ve got handy. Chives, rye or alfalfa seeds also work well.
• Compost - for stuffing. Or some soil from your garden.
• Small yoghurt pot
• Decorations – your own drawings on paper will work really well if you don’t have googly eyes etc. available
• Water-proof glue - For sticking on the decorations.
Instructions
Step 1: Cut off an 8" (20cm) section of your tights, or one of your socks that includes the toe.
Step 2: Stretch the tight/sock over a large cup or mug, and spoon in about 2 teaspoons full of
grass seeds.
Step 3: Pack in some sawdust or potting soil. Aim for the head to be roughly tennis ball sized.
Step 4: Tie a knot to close the end. No need to cut off the dangly bit.
Step 5: You can make a bulbous nose or ears by grabbing a bit of tight and twisting. Fasten base
of the nose with some thread or a small rubber band.
Step 6: Decorate! Use fabric scraps or permanent marker to decorate the face, and coloured
paper to make the yoghurt container into a dress or a suit or whatever you like - get creative! Just
make sure that any glues or markers you use for the head are water-proof.
Growing your Grass Heads
When you’re ready to grow your head, give it a good dunking in a bowl of water to moisten the sawdust/soil. Half-fill the yoghurt container with water, and put the head on top, with the excess stocking dangling down into the water. Put your creation on a windowsill or somewhere with plenty of sunlight. Check every day to make sure the head is moist - you might need to dribble a few drops of water onto the head now and then.
Continue the investigation
Make more than one grass head.
o What happens if your grass head gets no sun light, but still gets water?

o What happens if you put your grass head in a cardboard box, with only a small hole of
sunlight getting in?

Blue symbolises the sky and the heavens. It stands for external spiritual values.
Green is for the land, nature and environment. It symbolises earth and growth.
The red wheel symbolises movement and progress.

Recipe adapted from Ian Hancock, We Are the Romani people
• 1 Cup flour • 1 Teaspoon baking powder • 1 Cup marzipan • 1 Teaspoon cinnamon • 3 Cups milk (roughly) • 1 Teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 Teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/4 saffron to tast
Lesson – Food – What are Cinnamon Saffron Galuski?
Task – Make Cinnamon Saffron Galuski
Galuški is a lovely dessert of marzipan dumplings served in milk, sort of like a warm
cereal. This recipe is adapted from the book ‘We are the Romani people’
Ingredients
• 1 Cup flour
• 1 Teaspoon baking powder
• 1 Cup marzipan
• 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 Cups milk (roughly)
• 1 Teaspoon vanilla
• 1/2 Teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/4 saffron to taste
Directions
Mix the flour, marzipan, and baking powder together until it forms a stiff paste. Fashion the paste into balls as big as the end of your thumb. In a pot, combine the milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and saffron and bring to a boil.
Drop the dumplings into the boiling milk. Once they swell and float to the surface, remove from heat and serve in colourful bowls with the milk they were cooked in.
What is your opinion?
• Do you like it? Do you not like it?
• What does it taste like?
• Would you make it again?
