Message from the Head of Year

Exam dates: Monday 7th October –Friday 11th October

Your first ranking exams at STAC will start on Monday 7th October. These exams will run throughout the week and you will sit an exam for each of your subjects. These exams are your first opportunity to show what you are academically capable of, what you learnt at primary school and how much you have learnt in the first term at secondary school. They will help you, your teachers and your parents identify your strengths and areas which you need to improve on. The exams are taken very seriously and will be throughout your time at St Thomas the Apostle. They will be sat in examination conditions with the same rules as you would expect from your GCSE’s applied. During the Ranking Exams, you will need a clear pencil case with all your equipment in it. You must ensure you have several pencils, a ruler, a rubber and a scientific calculator. Following these exams, the Rank will be published which will show where your achievement is in relation to the other boys in the year group. This will inform your teachers and myself as to whether you are required to move sets. This means you could either move to a higher set or down a set; therefore you MUST try your very best to make sure you are pleased with your results. This revision booklet provides you with all the information you need to help you revise effectively and will help you achieve the grades and Rank you desire. All of your teachers have prepared this booklet to inform you which topics you will need to revise and how you can do this. You are expected to revise for these exams before October 7th and you should be revising for at least 1 hour per night as well as completing any other homework that has been set to an excellent standard. If you follow the advice and guidance in this booklet and from your teachers, you will achieve the grade you deserve. If you need any help with your homework or revision, you can get this from your teachers, tutors, and parents/guardians, before and after school and at lunch time. The Hub areas and the Library are also available for independent study every day at these times. Good luck and I look forward to seeing the results and celebrating any successes. Miss Smith Head of Year 7

General Information

This exam preparation booklet is designed to help you get the best out of your ability and help you move up the tutor groups.

What should you do?

You will be set a series of exams in each of your subjects to test you on what you have learnt. Your teachers provided a breakdown of the work you will have to cover to improve your position in the year. The results of these tests will determine which tutor group you will be until the next set of tests.

You must be prepared by getting yourself focused before the exams using lots of different resources. You have:

1. Your exercise books 2. Your revision guides 3. The Internet 4. Your family.

For each exam you must have the following equipment:

Black pens Pencils Ruler Eraser Pencil sharpener For Maths and Science: calculator, protractor and compass.

Spare equipment will not be provided!!

You must be at the correct room for your exam and must not be late. You will be provided with an exam timetable.

Don’t panic but work hard and aim to do YOUR best.

Facebook is NOT revising.

Page 6: Year 7 Revision Booklet - St Thomas the Apostle …...6. Ask parents/guardians to test your knowledge from your exercise books 7. Look closely at “green pen” corrections in your

How do I revise?

1. Reading your class notes and revision guides 2. Make simple notes from your class notes and revision guides 3. Draw diagrams on large pieces of paper that link topics taught and why they are linked.

These are called mind maps 4. Make “flashcards” of key topics and reading them on the bus etc. This means putting small

notes and pictures on football card sized pieces of paper. You can get them from places like WHSmith – called Registration cards

5. Complete tasks on internet sites like www.bbc.co.uk/learning/KS3 6. Ask parents/guardians to test your knowledge from your exercise books 7. Look closely at “green pen” corrections in your class work. 8. Realise that revision is not easy and takes time!! 9. Set aside a timed period at home that will be for work.

How do you eat an elephant? Piece by piece (and a big task gets completed).

What can Parents do? You can help your son prepare by:

1. Making sure they have a set amount of time to prepare each day 2. Avoiding giving them usual chores whilst they are preparing 3. Ensure they have a suitable space in which to prepare 4. Help minimise disturbances by younger siblings 5. Take their mobile phone away from them during preparation times 6. Do not believe they are revising on the internet solely – what are the other tabs on!? Let

them work on PCs in a public space in your home not in their room 7. Encourage them!!
