A–ArgumentMap–outlinethekeycomponentsofyourthesisstatementthatwillbeexploredinthebodyofyouressay.G–GeneralStatement–astatementtogiveanoverviewofyourtopicandovercomeanyobviouscounterarguments.

Example:Masksarevitaltothesuccessofperformersintheeffectiveportrayalcharacters.ItisclearfromadetailedexplorationofGreekTheatrethattheuseofmasksinperformancecanassistsactorscommunicateemotiontolargeaudiences.Successfulcharacterisationdependsonmasksinsomeinstances,suchasinCommediadell’Arte,becausestatusandcharactertraitscanbeintroducedusingthistheatricaltechnique.Additionally,theuseofmaskinrehearsalandactortrainingcanhelpanactortocraftappropriatephysicalitywhichisessentialtoasuccessfulperformance.Whilenotallactorswillwearamaskineveryperformancetheyeverdo,noristhephysicalperformancetheonlyelementtoasuccessfulact,researchclearlyemphasisestheneedforaccurateandclearcommunicationofdramaticmeaningthroughvisualmeans.

Example:Asuccessfulperformancereliesonanactorclearlycommunicatingacharacter’semotionandmaskscontributetothisinapositiveway.FromstudyingGreekTheatreandperformancesfromasearlyas400BCitisevidentthatmaskswereagreatwayofconveying“thedominantemotion”(Burton,2011)tolargecrowdsinthetraditionalGreekamphitheatres.Theireffectivenesshasnotreducedinmodernperformances.AlthoughoriginalGreekperformanceswereperformedtocrowdsreachingnumbersaround20000andmoderntheatreshaveanaveragecapacityofaround1500,theideaofthemasktoconveyaccurateemotionandcharacterisstillverymuchrelevantwhenconsideringareasofstagemakeupandspecialeffectsmakeup.Whilenolongercraftedfromwood(Roy,2009),thismodernconceptofthemasktoallowemotiontopenetrateheavystagelightsandreachbeyondtheorchestrapittothesomewhatdistantaudienceisanexampleofthevitalityofmaskinperformanceandhowmoderntheatremaintainsstronglinkstoitsroots.IfoundtheuseofmaskinmyperformanceofanexcerptfromAgamemnontobeextremelyusefulinportrayingtheprideoftheprotagonistbecauseitwasanexpressionthatIdidnotneedtomakewithmyfacebutwhichIwasabletopresentthroughbodylanguagewhichIemphasisedandmadeclearerasaresultoftheemotionalclarityofthemask.Thesuccessofmyperformancewasverymuchduetotheeffectiveintegrationofmaskasabuildingblockformyphysicalcharacterisation.
