Year 8 students and their par-

not to miss this important infor-
mation session. Students need to
understand the Year 9 program at
RHS, and be confident they can
choose the correct Year 9 Elec-
tives for them.

Bailey Holmes, Emma Gaston, Tyneaka Roach, Sara Lumby,

Ministerial Visit to RHS
James Merlino, Deputy Premier and Minister for
Education, visited RHS on Thursday 20th October.
James was met by 2016 School Captains Ben Jones
and Alicia Leahy and we were joined by Council Pres-
ident Shane McCluskey. James was accompanied by
Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern Victoria and
advisors. After an initial discussion, we visited the
Year 7 area and James and Jaclyn had the opportuni-
ty to talk with students and staff. We also visited the
Food Tech/Vine Restaurant area for a quick coffee.
James was very interested in how our building pro-
gram fitted into our Master Plan, supported our
approach to teaching and learning and what it would
take to bring the whole Master Plan to fruition. To
this end, we will be updating the Master Plan and
doing some more advanced analysis and quantity
surveying to calculate the funding required for fur-
ther, or complete, re-building works.
Year 12 Celebration Day
Year 12 students held their Celebration Day on
Wednesday 19th October. Naturally they arrived in
fancy dress and then we had our traditional named-
paver laying ceremony. After a great ‘Lyn style’
breakfast, we had our Year 12 Graduation School
Assembly. The following evening the Graduation
Dinner was held at the Corowa RSL.
2017 School Captains
Seven students nominated for the positions of
School Captains. It is not easy to nominate and then
stand up in front of your peers and state why they
would make a terrific school captain/leader. The
nominees gave very well thought out speeches and
are to be commended on their performances. Each
candidate gave a speech at a School Assembly on
Friday 14th October and students and staff voted on
Monday 17th October. The results are: 2017 School
Captains, Emma Gaston & Grace Ronnfeldt; 2017
Vice Captains, Sara Lumby & Bailey Holmes. Congrat-
ulations and well done to all.
Rutherglen Show
As usual we operated a BBQ at the Rutherglen Show.
A big thanks to the parent and student volunteers
who made the whole thing possible.
Due to recent weather and the cancellation of the
horse events, I reduced our orders considerably. We
sold out by 2:00 pm, banked $1813.80 and after
costs cleared $1053.14 – A very good effort.
A reminder that this coming Tuesday is a holiday for
Melbourne Cup Day.

On Thursday 13th October, 20 Year 11 students left Rutherglen
High at 5am and travelled to Melbourne for P.A.R.T.Y. Day
(Prevention of Alcohol Related Trauma in Youth).
Upon arrival we were allocated to groups and lead through the
introduction. The day consisted of educational talks, workshops
and guest speakers. Many of us volunteered throughout the
workshops and although it was fun at times, the whole day was
incredibly confronting and eye-opening. We all enjoyed the
experience and will take a very important message away from
it.
Below are comments from those who attended:
‘Live once, think twice’. . .Motto for the day.
We loved hearing about the survivor, Robbie. Most eye- open-
ing experience of the day.
In the future I feel I’ll be more inclined to carefully consider the
risks when at a party.
It was a very emotional day and some things were very con-
fronting, but overall it was a really good day.
It was an extremely worthwhile day and will make me think
twice in the future.
It was worth the early wake up. The staff were all very wel-
coming; and it will make me think about my future.
Overall the day was very heart-warming; staff involved us
greatly and Robbie’s story was confronting but charm-
ing.
It was a very emotional day but they made it easy for us to
understand what to do if something went wrong.
Regardless of how confronting and emotional the day may
have been, it was a very rewarding experience that I
truly hope nobody takes for granted. This program
would benefit all schools highly.
Valuable lessons were learnt and definitely has made me think
twice about the choices I make and the impact they can
have on my family.
The day was very worthwhile as it was a very powerful day
that made you realise how something can have such a
large impact on you and your family.
The P.A.R.T.Y. Day really opened my eyes to the terrible things
that can happen to you and people around you when
people make silly decisions that could be prevented by
‘Live once, think twice’.
My experiences at the P.A.R.T.Y. Day were extremely eye-
opening and showed the consequences that can come
from one bad decision. I would recommend this day to
anyone.

Our students were once again fantastic ambas-
sadors for our school when they attended the
P.A.R.T.Y program at the Royal Melbourne
Hospital. Below is some feedback from the
Coordinator of the day.
“It was our pleasure hosting Rutherglen—everyone
was so impressed with the students! Such a big day
for you all. I admire your dedication getting up so early, and I was amazed how attentive
and focused the students remained throughout the whole day. They all had beautiful man-
ners and showed their appreciation. It was a really enjoyable day at our end.”
Congratulations once again to all our students who were facing content that was some-
times confronting, hard hitting and emotional and continued to display exemplary behav-
iour. - Linda
