Homework Project – The Tempest

You will have four weeks to complete this project:You have been asked to produce a theatre programme for an exciting new production of ‘The Tempest’ which will be sold to members of the audience at The Key Theatre in Peterborough.The programmes will sell for £6.00 each so they must be full of interesting information and pictures to make the price worthwhile. The theatre has asked you to include four main aspects and you should tackle one a week, however, you may wish to include some extras of your own!! Before you start it would be helpful to do some research into the theatre where the production will be held. Check out http://www.vivacitypeterborough.com/venues/key-theatre.You might also want to ask at home to see if you have any old theatre programmes to get an idea of what they look like and the type of information usually included.

Week one: A front cover design, with title, production details and a

relevant picture associated with the play. A cast list including all of the characters and some

information about who they are. A synopsis of the plot (without giving the ending away). It

would probably be a good idea to split this into Acts writing a paragraph for each. There are 5 acts altogether in The Tempest.

Week two: Biographies of the leading actors. These can be

completely imaginary so you could cast your best friend as Miranda or your favourite Hollywood actor as Ferdinand! Include a picture and a brief biography.

Costume designs for 4 of the main characters; you can decide who to choose.

Week three: Create a set design for the island. Include lighting, props,

backgrounds, and any special effects i.e. a rotating stage!! Try and be as unusual and creative as possible. Remember to include detailed labels to make it easy to understand. It might look best if you do this over 2 pages.

Letter from the director – imagine what the director of the production would write about his play to tell his audience and include this in your programme. The director would probably tell his audience why his version of the play is so good and what is unusual and good about it.

Week four: Create some advertisements for merchandise from the play

to go into the programme. You might choose the traditional t-shirt and mug or perhaps something a bit different like a gruesome Caliban doll which speaks lines from the play!!

Design the back cover and create a contents page. Remember to number your pages first!

Make sure you space all of the activities out and don’t leave everything to the last week. You might like to do a lot of the work on the computer but include some handwritten/hand drawn items as well. If it helps you may wish to cut out pictures from newspapers and magazines to make your programme as interesting as possible.There is lots of information on the internet about The Tempest and you are encouraged to do as much research as possible just make sure you do not copy anything word for word… it will be obvious!
