YEAR 9 RESISTANT MATERIALS

Over the next 5 weeks you will complete a range of tasks at home

Details of each task can be found in this booklet, clearly labelled weeks 1 - 5

Work must be handed in on time each week and presented neatly.

It is your responsibility to keep this booklet safe. If you lose it you must pay to

print another, photocopy someone else’s or write up the tasks by looking at a

friend’s. It will not be accepted as an excuse for not handing in your work.

Week 1: Timber

Types of Wood Wood is another name for Timber. There are 3 types of

wood, called Hardwood, Softwood and Manufactured

boards. Hard and soft woods do not refer to the properties of

the wood: some softwoods can be hard and some hard

woods can be soft

Week 2: Manufacturing

Wood Joints There are a number of ways to join wood. Wood

joints are commonly used to build strength into

products. They vary in strength and are reinforced

using glue and/or components.

Week 3: Polymers

Types of Plastics The correct term for Plastics is ‘Polymers’. There

are 2 main types of plastics—Thermo Plastic and

thermo Setting Plastics. Thermo plastics can be re-

cycled whereas Thermo Set plastic can not.

Week 4: Metals

Ferrous and Non Ferrous Metals There are 2 types of Metals - Ferrous and non -

Ferrous. It is rare for metals to be sued in pure

form. Normally they are mixed with other metals

to improve their properties ; the mixture is called

an alloy.

Week 5: Biomimicry

Projects that are changing Products A few savvy manufacturers are beginning to look at na-

ture’s laboratory to find solutions to some of our toughest

design problems This process, called Biomimicry, seeks to

harness the capabilities found in structures that have

evolved in the plants and animals around us to make,

stronger and more sustainable products for the future.

Week 6: Sustainability Sustainability is used to refer to a range of different

concepts and practices. But it usually makes us think

about carbon footprints, greenhouse gases and eco-

systems. This is the environmental aspect of sustain-

ability. Economic and social factors are now recog-

nised as equally important aspects of sustainability.

compared to a camping lantern: ____________________________

4. Identify and describe two features of the electronic toothbrush

that show that the designer has thought about product mainte-

nance : feature 1- _______________________________________

Feature 2 - ______________________________________

Reduce We must mend broken products instead of throwing them away.

Reuse We should decrease the amount of finite materials that we use.

Recycle We should decide whether we need products before we buy them.

Refuse We should think of another use for a product before we throw it away.

Repair We should decide not to buy products that harm the environment.

Rethink We should make sure that products are converted back to their basic materials and then remade into new products.
