Taster 2016 – Part 2Taster 2016 – Part 2
Lesson 1 LOsLO1: Can list key factors in box office
successCan provide example/s for theseCan use some specific terminology in
doing soQUESTION: What does ‘box office’
mean?
Lesson 2 LOsCan apply knowledge &
understanding of film production practices to a convincing film pitch
Some might apply this through a mock-up film poster
CAN YOU NAME THIS FILM?You are going to HEAR
a trailer of a film out now (0-0:50)Can you name it?What additional production practice
has this film used? HINT: genre…Can you think of any other films that
have used this ‘hybrid’ genre approach?
Hybrid genreThis is now a common idea: the rom-
com is both a romantic drama (for women) and a comedy (to boost male audience appeal)
Extreme hybrids like the costume/period romance drama and vampire Pride and Prejudice and Zombies could also be termed a mash-up.
Shaun of the Dead took it a step further … as a zom-rom-com it’s a triple hybrid!
Killer linesCan anyone recall any of the taglines
from these posters – the short lines that sum the film up, often using a pun or some wordplay?
Bloody LovelyFirst Contact. Last Stand.Ever felt your were surrounded by
zombies?President by day. Hunter by night.
Tagline Quiz See if you can name the film just by the
tagline, or taglines (there are often multiple posters, each with their own tagline)…
Uh oh. Meet Stuart, Kevin & Bob Go back to where it all began. Before Gru, they had a history of bad bosses It's going to be a blast. MINIONS!
Tagline Quiz(2) See if you can name the film just by the
tagline, or taglines (there are often multiple posters, each with their own tagline)…
"This Ain't No Chick Flick!“ A few good hen The lone free ranger She’s poultry in motion "Escape or Die Frying." CHICKEN RUN!
Tagline Quiz(3)Match the tagline to the film title (all real!) Things are about to get a
little hairy. How do I loathe thee? Let me
count the ways. In space no one can hear you
scream. Earth. It was fun while it
lasted. An epic of miniature
proportions.
Alien Armageddon 10 Things I
Hate About You A Bug’s Life An American
Werewolf in Paris
YOUR TASKIn small groups (2 or 3) you will be
pitching an idea reflecting your knowledge and understanding of what makes a film successful, providing actual examples to back your case
Specifically, you will be pitching a hybrid genre (or mash-up) film
See the blog post for full instructionsIF you’ve time you could create
something like this…
You have been invited to pitch a film idea to the world's most successful film distributor, Universal International Pictures.
They are especially interested to hear of any hybrid ideas you might have - no matter how outrageous.
You could combine two existing film franchises (series) or attempt a more original idea.
Either way you need to detail: the budget the main cast the genres which film/s it can be compared to (it should be clear they are
successful films!) the title at least one tagline a summary of why you think this film would be box office gold
It would be to your advantage to have some visual aids (maybe even a mock-up poster) to boost your chances of successful pitching and winning funding - but focus on the content first!
