What makes 2010 The Year of the Rider2010 marks the 10th anniversary of Cabrinha Kites. The year of the rider represents the beginning of a new era that acknowledges the contribution our riders have made to the sport and the Cabrinha brand. 2010 also highlights a company wide shift to a rider based development structure. By riders we mean everyone from the entry level punter to the touring pros. We are in this game to deliver solid equipment solutions for every type of rider. Our focus is on the total rider experience and we only purse the technologies that will benefit the rider in a tangible way.

The Year of The Rider also celebrates the style and culture of our sport as much as the products we are making. There is a lot happening on and off the water that has little to do with the type of product that you are riding. The riders themselves are engaged in showcasing the lifestyle as much as the action on the water. I think this contributes greatly to the overall appeal of kiteboarding.

Can you frame your vision for kiteboarding in three words or a single phrase?PeRfORmanCe. SImPlICITY. STYle. The long term success of our sport will depend in large part on these three things. Performace will be driven by the competition between the riders and the brands. Therefore I think it is a given that the sport will see a continued rise in the performace level of the products. However, adding performance while simplifying the product is a challenge where only a few of the most savvy brands will succeed. and finally, I think that kiteboarding needs to re-align its image and overall appeal with the sports that share its Dna such as surfing and wakeboarding. I believe that kiteboarding has much more to offer to it’s consumers than the latest in technology. It’s got a very cool lifestyle that is not always portrayed in right light.

after 10 years in the business, what is the next step for Cabrinha? To expand the Cabrinha brand into the relevant areas that are legit. We have already begun to grow our surf offering and we plan to continue in this direction. We are also investing heavily in the fast growing racing market. We aim to be a compete brand, supplying the riders with top of the line equipment in whichever discipline they ride.

You just finished up a tour through France in an RV jammed with 8 people. What was close quarter living like? The French road trip was definitely a funny one. We hit some sick spots and got to know everyone really well. I made sure early on to stake out a prime bed and without that I most likely would not have survived.

The way you throw tricks, you must be beating up your body. What hurts and how do you stay fit?EVERYTHING. After a hard session I really feel it. I have a solid cross training routine though and try to keep my body healthy and feeling good all the time. What do you find satisfying about the sport of kiteboarding?Kiteboarding really is a phenomenal sport, filled with amazing people. The sport has taken me all over the globe and given me a chance to ride in dream locations.

You’ve had your fair share of travels. What is a spot most people would never think to go, but should and why? Most of the kiting locations I have visited have been pretty well known destinations. My personal favorite spots are Western Australia, Greece and my home spot in Maui.

You have been crazy busy with photo shoots, tv gigs, touring and skydiving. What are some of the highlights this past year? This year I’ve been all over the place. In february I organized a girls kiteboarding trip to DR and necker island, together with Tuva Jansen, Tomoko Okazaki and Tracy Kraft. That was definitely my favorite thing so far this year. I did a road trip through Cuba, a tv pilot shoot in london, another TV shoot in California and Orlando then I was at the Triple S in Hatteras which is my favorite contest of the year. I recently passed my certification class to skydive solo. I plan on doing more jumps soon.

Your mai Tai Camp with Bill Tai is getting so much media play and attention in only its third year. What is the appeal? It’s funny because we don’t actually advertise the mai Tai or tell anyone about it except for the people we invite. But everyone is so connected with Twitter, the fun spreads quickly. It’s amazing to see over the last few years it has grown to be what it is now and I think the main appeal is the fact that the event is so exclusive. Bill Tai, a venture capitalist from Silicon Valley, handpicks the participants and since he has a really good people sense it always ends up being a super interesting and positive crew. I’m really happy to be involved in something that combines high powered business people and kiteboarding. I find it amazing how some of the world’s smartest people are happy just flying a kite.

What do you think would help getting more women into the sport?I think the first thing we need to do is make more gear that targets women. Chicks wanna look good on the water and if they see a girly looking board/harness or bar in the shop it will make them want to go try it. also, giving girls more attention in the sport will lead to more girls getting involved because they can relate. I didn’t get excited about kiteboarding until I saw girls ripping on the water.

You were a competitive skier and are now focusing on course racing

as a kiteboarder. What is it about speed?I just like trying everything that the sport has to offer, I never want a dull moment. The speed came from my clothing sponsor Rob Douglas who is the fastest american and will be the fastest in the world this year. He is the guy to beat in the speed world. He kept asking me to go so we flew to Costa Rica to train and I fell in love with it instantly. There was three of us putting the hammer down run after run in super strong winds. We wanted to max out in the flat water section, then put the brakes on as you go into huge chop at the end of our fun course. The wipe outs we had were awesome. What a rush! Then we all flew to france for the world championships in speed. I was there to see Rob win and be there to support him. Rob ended up 3rd and I was 4th. Just finishing close to him was everything to me. That is when I got hooked. Records are going to fall!

How much of racing depends on equipment vs rider? Well I was raised by a father who would always try to get the idea out of my head that equipment matters. I think once you get something that works, it is all mental. I truly believe it. I won nationals last year in course racing with fins my father and I made that had no foil and everyone laughed at them. Once you build something close, it is all about getting used to it and making it work for you.

Besides skiing, kiteboarding, and fishing, you also have your pilot’s license. How do all these activities relate? I gravitate towards the training and growing process of any activity. Once you accomplish your goals, I find myself looking for a new challenge. my pilot’s license was another fun learning process. my new one is powered paragliding - it is so crazy! all the activities relate because they all require a great deal of focused training and dedication to improvement.

You have been hanging out with a bit of a crew lately. How do the other guys influence your riding and the stuff you produce - from the rails you’re building, to films, photos?I’m used to riding with a crew because thats the most fun you can have. We feed off of each other’s energy and push ourselves to try new stuff. When you put a group of creative minds together that’s where the progression in film, photos, building and riding takes place.

Getting kiteboarding on television has been a goal of yours. What would this do for the sport? I’ve always wanted to see kiteboarding grow and make it as a legit board sport along side surf, skate, wake, snow. I think for this to happen it will have to get on television so the masses can see what is possible. Kiteboarding is finally at a stage where the riding, gear and videography is at a level that people would appreciate seeing it. So hopefully we will get some TV coverage soon so that we can stoke more people out on the sport.

You have mentored riders like Jake Kelsick not only in riding, but the business. What advice do you give them? I try to teach the upcoming riders that being a professional kiteboarder is more than just being a good rider. You have to have respect for yourself, others and the industry. I know many good riders who didn’t make it to pro level and will probably never make it because of their attitude. Don’t be that guy who rips but no one likes because they are too full of themselves or never want to lend a helping hand. Use your resources to meet people within the industry and create good relationships. market yourself! Get a personal website where you can host info and media about yourself, post vids of yourself online. Whatever you do, never forget that kiteboarding is fun so don’t stress if things aren’t happening as fast as you would like them to. Go ride, have fun and work hard and the rest will fall into place.

You recently started playing golf. Pro surfers Kelly Slater and Rob machado both say it’s the best activity to do when it’s flat. any similarities?I was looking for something to do when there are no wind or waves and golf seemed like the ticket. The first time I hit a golf ball I was hooked. It’s similar in the sense that you can never really master the sport. no session is ever the same because the conditions are constantly changing, and it can be challenging and rewarding which keeps me interested.

You kite, surf, skate, and spearfish. What is the common thread in these activities for you? Skating and kiting came as an extension of my surfing and my love of the ocean. Before anything, I was fishing and snorkeling with my dad and grandfather. I would say they all have roots from things that started in the water.

What’s the difference between surfing and kitesurfing for you? Well not much anymore to tell the truth. The equipment has evolved so far,

they are very similar experiences. I kite and surf with the same boards 90% of the time now. It lets me extend my time on the water on blown out days.

When it gets too windy to surf, I am always kiting. and when the wind drops, I paddle out. anytime I spend in the water I am happy.

What misconceptions do people have about kiteboarding?People think there is a specific way you need to ride to have fun. any way that you

can enjoy yourself on the water is a positive experience. I’m not judging anyone but myself. next misconception would be that kiteboarding is dangerous. Cabrinha really

focuses on keeping people safe and riding worry free. The sport would not be where it is today without the safety innovations Cabrinha has brought to the market.

You’ve worked in R&D and as a team rider. What do you find the most rewarding? They are both similar. R&D is all about looking outside yourself and deciphering what other people need to maximize their enjoyment on the water. With team riding you are trying to look at yourself from the outside to make your riding look and feel the smoothest you can. for both, you are trying to innovate to keep pushing the sport forward.

What sessions have you had that stand above all others? Riding with friends and family, but my two favorite sessions are: micronesia with Jody and Gavin on the Best Odyssey. amazing in all ways. Incredible people, incredible waves. also, SUP kiting around with my mom in the Caribbean. Taking my mom out in really light wind and having a great time just shooting over reefs and taking her for a ride is very memorable. FOR COMPLETE INTERVIEW GO TO CABRINHAKITES.COM

You won a sponsorship deal through youth training events in the UK. How has that changed your life? It hit me quick. I wasn’t expecting it at all and I can’t put into words how much its helped me as a rider. now I’m setting goals to take my riding further. I have been given loads of support from Chris, Dave and others on the team. The youth program was so successful, Youth empire around the world was launched. What is your part in it? now that the Youth empire is really kicking off, I’ll be hosting the Youth empire UK site by running the forums with all the news, gathering updates and much more. as it becomes more global there will be a huge network of all the kite groms in the world. I’ll be heading around the UK this season organizing gatherings which means anything from trips wakeboarding, going to competitions and learning and meeting new mates and having even more fun with the sport we love. You are part of the next generation of kiteboarders. What other young riders would you give props to out there and why? I think Polly, a young girl here in the UK will do well. She has the perfect attitude towards all aspects to kiting and she is there to have fun and do well and she is learning new tricks quicker than I cycle down the beach! Do you think a certain discipline of kiting appeals to young kiters more or do you find its just as broad for everyone? It varies. most youngsters are pretty set on general competition freestyle. Stuff like course racing and waveriding looks like grandad’s sport through young eyes! I think throughout this year that will change for sure. I’m pushing bindings in my riding right now. It’s the one thing I’m really having fun with. So I think wakeskates, boots and wave boards will become more and more popular once that generation has a chance to properly try it. You have some interesting projects in the pipeline. What are you the most excited about? I’m working with some guys now who are filming everything from day to day life, riding, training and competitions and are planning to sell the series to the likes of Channel 4 here in the UK. We’ll see how it goes. But you’ll be seeing some more things from me that I won’t give away yet.
