YEARS OF MEMORIES WEEKS OF FUN YMCA Camp Wapsie

REGISTRATION BEGINS ON FEBRUARY 1ST

From our roots in 1918 when Chuck Filipi took a group of boys on a canoe and camping trip down the Iowa River, a spark was formed that grew into a hundred year history of YMCA Camp Wapsie. Camp has evolved since those early years, from a skills based all male camp living in tents to the modern day coed camp, steeped in tradition where campers reside in all kinds of living units. While camp continues to grow and evolve many things still remain the same, namely the

camping spirit that our 50+ staff members and nearly 1900 campers feel when the wake up bell rings, or when they run from activity to activity on Friday afternoon’s Mission Impossible, or even out on a daring backwaters adventure with new friends. The magic of Camp Wapsie still burns bright like the flames of our Wish Stick Campfire.

2017 saw some great additions to our programs and facilities; from new seasonal cabins for Wilderness Education and Adventure Trips, to fun new activities like 9 Square and ukuleles. 2018 will be no different as we continue to grow and meet the needs of our camp families. One noticeable evolution will be around the Teepee Village. After collecting input from parents, staff, campers and alumni we’ve created a design to keep much of the look and feel of the Teepee Village while improving the structures. These larger wooden walled teepees add more interior space, better protection from the weather and insects, all while maintaining the programmatic elements we’ve come to cherish over the years. We hope you visit this Spring or Summer to see all of the beautiful new projects.

Much like it takes a village to raise a child; it takes a committed community to make a summer camp prosper. Through the efforts of thousands of people, Camp Wapsie saw record numbers in attendance for 2017. From the staff that help campers have a meaningful and memorable week; to the leadership of directors and the Y that organize the behind the scenes efforts; to the countless volunteers that shape and improve camp; and most importantly to the campers who give us all purpose and make camp a magical place. All of these intricate pieces come together to celebrate what’s been done and keep us looking ahead for what’s to come.

To better meet the needs of our camping community and Y association we’ve needed to add a page to the Registration Form this year. Please be sure to read and sign this updated agreement, and return it with the standard Registration Form. We hope this is beneficial for campers, parents, and staff alike. As always, please contact us directly if any guidance is needed.

Thank you for supporting camp and we hope to see you at our Centennial Celebration, June 9th from 1:00-7:00pm at camp. We’re proud to call you family and look forward to serving you for another 100 years.

Sincerely in Camping,

Paul Denowski Drew Demery Executive Director, Summer Camp Director, YMCA Camp Wapsie YMCA Camp Wapsie

MAKING CAMP AFFORDABLE FOR EVERYONE

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEYMCA Camp Wapsie and the YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area are committed to providing quality programs to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. The Y is for Youth Development.

Financial Assistance is subsidized by the YMCA Annual Support Campaign. Families can contribute to the campaign or get an application to request assistance by visiting campwapsie.org or calling 319.435.2577.

TIER PRICING Camp Wapsie has three pricing levels to better accommodate differing incomes. Please select the highest tier you can afford, to allow YMCA Camp Wapsie to continue to improve the quality of each camper’s experience.

Our tiered pricing system in no way influences your child’s experience! We feel it is important to share the true cost of running YMCA Camp Wapsie. This gives families the opportunity to decide how much they can contribute toward their child’s experience.

TIER A most accurately reflects the true and actual cost of YMCA Camp Wapsie.

TIER B is a partially subsidized rate, but more closely reflects the actual cost of camp.

TIER C is camp’s most subsidized rate, which does not represent the true cost of camp. This rate is subsidized by the work of volunteers, fundraising and sustaining contributions.

SIGNATURES REQUIRED FOR CAMP PARTICIPATIONRELEASE, INDEMNIFICATION AND HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT

In consideration of membership current or new, or participating in YMCA activities, and for other good and valuable consideration, I hereby agree to release and discharge from liability arising from negligence the YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area and its owners, directors, officers, employees, agents, volunteers, participants, and all other persons or entities acting for them (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Releasees”), on behalf of myself and my children, parents, heirs, assigns, personal representative and estate, and also agree as follows:

1. I acknowledge that participating in YMCA activities involves known and unanticipated risks which could result in physical or emotional injury, paralysis or permanent disability, death, and property damage. Risks include, but are not limited to, broken bones, torn ligaments or other injuries as a result of falls or contact with other participants; death as a result of drowning or brain damage caused by near drowning in pools or other bodies of water; medical conditions resulting from physical activity; and damaged clothing or other property. I understand such risks simply cannot be eliminated, despite the use of safety equipment, without jeopardizing the essential qualities of the activity.

2. I expressly accept and assume all of the risks inherent in this activity or that might have been caused by the negligence of the Releasees. My participation in this activity is purely voluntary and I elect to participate despite the risks. In addition, if at any time I believe that event conditions are unsafe or that I am unable to participate due to physical or medical conditions, then I will immediately discontinue participation.

3. I hereby voluntarily release, forever discharge, and agree to indemnify and hold harmless Releasees from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action which are in any way connected with my participation in this activity, or my use of their equipment or facilities, arising from negligence. This release does not apply to claims arising from intentional conduct. Should Releasees or anyone acting on their behalf be required to incur attorney’s fees and costs to enforce this agreement, I agree to indemnify and hold them harmless for all such fees and costs.

4. I represent that I have adequate insurance to cover any injury or damage I may suffer or cause while participating in this activity, or else I agree to bear the costs of such injury or damage myself. I further represent that I have no medical or physical condition which could interfere with my safety in this activity, or else I am willing to assume – and bear the costs of – all risks that may be created, directly or indirectly, by any such condition.

5. In the event that I file a lawsuit, I agree to do so in the state where Releasees’ facility is located, and I further agree that the substantive law of that state shall apply.

6. I agree that if any portion of this agreement is found to be void or unenforceable, the remaining portions shall remain in full force and effect.

7. “By participating in the YMCA Nationwide Membership Program, I agree to release the National Council of Young Men’s Christian Associations of the United States of America, and its independent and autonomous member associations in the United States and Puerto Rico, from claims of negligence for bodily injury or death in connection with the use of YMCA facilities, and from any liability for other claims, including loss of property, to the fullest extent of the law.”
