Klamath River The Keno Section of the Klamath River is open until June 15th, 2014. Look for stone and caddis hatches and be prepared to match. Fish the caddis and stone imitations on the dead drift near the bottom for best success. Mayflies are also hatching and can be matched well with olive tungsten bead headed pheasant tails. Grey and black damsels are showing up sporadically throughout the day—damsel nymphs can be productive. Yellow Stone Flies are working well, also. Flies imitating minnows and sculpins can be very effective (the Sculpzilla and Muddler Minnow). There is an abundance of food in this stretch so fish rarely rise to flies on the surface. The Klamath River between JC Boyle Dam to JC Boyle Powerhouse offers excellent dry fly fishing with small flies. Most fish in this section are small and average 10 inches. Fishing is best below the spring inputs. The most effective method this time of year is dead drifting stonefly, pheasant tail and hares ear patterns. Fishing with dry flies improves towards the end of the day when water levels drop. This section of river requires a hike down steep grade to the river with the exception of the area just above the powerhouse. Mayflies and Caddis are hatching sporadically, with the best hatches occurring at dusk. Look for rising trout in the slow backwater areas near tail-outs of pools or in back eddies along foam lines. A lot of stone flies are showing up and fishing a foam stimulator with action is very successful. Look at fishing a salmonfly, also (rogue foam). The Keno Section of the Klamath is fishing excellent! The Keno section produces some big Redband Rainbow trout with streamers and nymphs. Look for big fish behind rocks in circulating water. The wild & scenic section of the Klamath River provides great opportunities for catching trout on dry flies. Swinging stimulator patterns and dead drifting them is getting fish to rise. Some drakes were hatching, also. Amazing hatches on both sections that are worth checking out! Both the Keno Section and Wild and Scenic section of the Klamath River are fishing excellent! The fishing should remain great through the week. A chance of rain the next couple of days, but then the sun should come back out. Be careful wading and have fun! Rogue River Lower Rogue River: Steelhead, Spring Chinook Spring Chinook fishing was really good over the weekend with the increased flows. With warmer weather in the valley look for the bite to slow as water temperatures rise. Before heading out, anglers should check river flows, water temperatures, and tides as these are all important to catching spring Chinook. Middle Rogue River: Steelhead, Spring Chinook Rain over the weekend significantly increased flows in the Rogue River, and may have moved a few more spring chinook into the middle Rogue around Grants Pass. Upper Rogue River: Steelhead, Spring Chinook

7

Anglers are catching Spring Chinook in the river from Shady Cove upstream to Cole Rivers Hatchery. Indicator fishing with a yarn egg pattern is productive. Rogue River, above Lost Creek Reservoir: Trout This reach of the Rogue is open to trout fishing year-round; however, the first stocking of rainbow trout for this year will not occur until late May. Holdover rainbow trout, and naturally produced rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout are available in the river and in many tributaries. Lower flow levels this spring should make for better early-season fishing. Trout fishing is open! Fish stone flies on top, or under an indicator. Dead drifting yarn egg patterns is a popular method for catching Spring Chinook. Summer Steelhead have arrived at the hatchery! Spring Chinook fishing should improve through the month as more fish arrive to the hatchery. Fishing pressure is increasing on the river as people look to catch Salmon. Remember fishing etiquette when around other anglers. The count to the hatchery as of 5/28/14 Spring chinook = 2,974 Winter Steelhead = 3,651 Summer Steelhead = 18 Williamson River Flows are extremely low and water clarity is very good for this time of year. Many redband trout are spawning or have just completed spawning in the Williamson River especially above Chiloquin. If you catch a redband trout you can identify spawning redband trout by being very dark (almost black) and very skinny. Redband trout in the Williamson River have been documented to spawn up to six times so releasing these fish can result in them spawning many more times. ODFW encourages catch and release in this fishery to promote trophy sized fish as the Williamson River is managed for trophy redband trout. Fishing for redband trout is best from the confluence of the Sprague River to slack water above Modoc Point Bridge. Most effective fishing occurs from a drift boat as little public access occurs. Most anglers hire a guide to fish this river due to the challenge of catching fish. Most anglers fly fish this section of river. Numerous insect hatches are occurring including salmonflies, various mayflies and caddis. Leech and wooly bugger patterns work well in early season before fish get educated. River recently opened on May 24th, 2014. Stone nymphs, copper johns and leach patterns can be productive. Big fish in this river with limited public access. Fishing pressure should decrease as the season progresses. Check out the recently opened river and have fun!

Wood River Wood River is one of the best brown trout fisheries in the state. Fishing remains ok on the Wood River with low flows and good insect hatches. Numerous mayflies, stoneflies and caddis flies are hatching especially on warmer overcast days. Past ODFW studies have shown brown trout consuming large numbers of earthworms during the spring below weed road. Bait is not allowed

8

but imitations of earthworms such as San Juan worm flies should work well. The highest density of brown trout in the river occurs below Weed Road in the early season. Anglers should also have success fishing spoons and plugs in the deep pools for brown trout. If brown trout are not rising to insects they are typically holding in deep water or under cover. Flies and lures should be fished deep when no surface activity is observed. Sculpins are also a favorite food for brown trout. Sculpins live on the bottom of the river which is another reason anglers need to present flies and lures near the bottom. Anglers should concentrate their efforts from Fort Klamath to the mouth. A boat is recommended to fish the Wood River as little public land occurs on the river. Most anglers use a low profile boat to float under and portage around the many obstacles on the river. A typical drift boat can be used from Weed Road to mouth but can’t be used upstream due to low bridges. Bank access is limited but public property is available on BLM property at the BLM wetland and the USFS Day use area above Fort Klamath. Small boats can be launched at Kimball State Park (breathtaking headwaters), USFS day use area, Highway 62 bridge crossing and Weed Road. Weed Road has the only semi-improved boat launch for larger boats such and drift boats.

We, the Chiloquilters would like to invite you to attend our 9th Annual Quilt Show to be held June 28th and 29th at our beautiful Community Center in downtown Chiloquin. Hours will be from 10 AM until 4 PM. The admission is $3, seniors $2, children under 12, free. There will be vendors, many door prizes and lots of beautiful quilts at our small but mighty show. Food will be available, provided by our local FCE (Family and Community Education) group. Our community raffle quilt ‘Cabins in the Starlight’ will be on display with raffle tickets available. The proceeds will benefit programs at the Chiloquin Community Center. The featured quilter this year will be Twila Wagner who specializes in long arm quilting. There are many other hand crafted items for sale at Two Rivers Gallery, also located in our Community Center. We will also have a Country Store with items slightly used, but not abused books, notions, magazines and ‘what was I thinking?’ fabric at reasonable process.

The saying ‘little but mighty’ goes for the City of Chiloquin and also for the Chiloquilters. The Chiloquilters is a very small but prolific group of 16 quilters. Since 2002 this small group has raised and donated some $21,000 used to further the good works of the Chiloquin Community Center. They also have donated many quilts for our soldiers and for the Linus blanket project. To date they have donated over 700 kids quilts for this worthwhile cause. For the husbands and kids there will be train rides on Saturday at world renowned Train Mountains’ Klamath & Western Railroad just a short distance away. Please call Linda Wood 541-281-7101 with any questions. Hope to see you there!

Thursday, May 29, 2014 [Klamath Falls]—Continued warm, dry and windy weather conditions have prompted fire officials in Klamath and Lake Counties to declare fire season beginning Monday, June 2, 2014 at 12:01 A.M. on lands protected by the Klamath-Lake District, Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). This affects all private, county, and state forest lands, as well as those Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands west of the Gerber Reservoir Area in Klamath County. “Conditions have reached the stage where regulatory fire prevention measures are necessary to reduce the potential of human caused fire starts,” stated Randall Baley, Protection Fire Planner, Oregon Department of Forestry. “By implementing these fire restrictions and promoting public awareness about fire prevention and changing local conditions, we can keep the number of and damages resulting from human caused fires down.” The “Fire Season in effect” declaration puts into place regulations restricting debris burning and timber harvest operations. Wildland and structural fire protection agencies in Klamath County have agreed to prohibit all outdoor debris burning. Forest operations that require a Permit to Operate Power Driven Machinery now are required to have Fire tool, on-site water supply, and watchman service on privately owned forest land. Declaring “Fire Season” also prohibits the release of sky lanterns, the discharge of exploding targets or the discharge of tracer ammunition during this period. Walker Range Forest Patrol, in Northern Klamath and Lake Counties went into Fire Season, May 22, 2014. Southwest Oregon District, Oregon Department of Forestry [Jackson and Josephine Counties] is anticipating going into “Fire Season” mid-June. In addition to the “Declaration of Fire Season”, ODF and the Klamath Resource Area (BLM) will be placing the Klamath River Canyon area from Keno to the State Line in a “Regulated Closure”. The Closure stipulates the following: 1) Possession of the following fire-fighting equipment is required while traveling in the forest, except on state and county roads: an axe, a shovel, and one gallon of water or one 2½ pound or larger fire extinguisher. · “Axe” means a wood cutting tool having a handle of not less than 26 inches in length and a head weight of not less than 2 pounds. · “Shovel,” means a digging tool having a handle not less than 26 inches in length and a blade of not less than 8 inches in width. 2) Smoking in wildland areas is permitted only in enclosed vehicles on roads. Smoking is prohibited while working or traveling in an industrial operation area. 3) Open fires, including campfires, charcoal fires, cooking fires and warming fires, are permitted only at posted and designated sites. 4) Non-Industrial Chainsaw usage is prohibited between 1 P.M. and 8 P.M. 5) Fireworks usage is prohibited within the Closure Area. The Klamath River Canyon has been placed under this Regulated Closure due to its lower elevation, drier fuels, and steep terrain. The Klamath-Lake District website http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/pages/field/kl/aboutklamathlake.aspx is available to assist in keeping people informed of current and changing conditions for our area.

Kayak trip on Williamson River offered Saturday, June 7, a combined hike and kayak trip into the Williamson River Canyon. You can hike up the unofficial trail in the canyon, hike up a road above the east side of the canyon, and kayak up the canyon. All of the routes allow you to go about a mile, one-way. The canyon is beautiful in the spring. Meet at The Ledge at 8:00 a.m. or at the Collier State Park day use area at about 8:45 a.m. All kayaks and kayakers should meet state regulations, including life jackets, a whistle, and a "weed stamp," if the kayak is over 10' long. We encourage sharing of kayaks with others while you hike. A change of clothes may be desirable. For more information contact Gary at 402-290-6592 or [email protected]

FCE (Family and Community Education) Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
