News Watch - India Macro QuarterlyIndia Elections 2014 The Game Changer

Empirical evidence shows that growth rate of capital formation in

India dips by around 100bps in an election year compared to thenon-election years

Difference this time is that India is already going through a soft patchThe ongoing structural slowdown and the election related uncertaintytogether have prolonged the contraction in capital formation

Our analysis also shows that growth rate in gross capital formationaccelerate by around 370bps (on average) one year after theelections

Impact on consumer demand is also positive and headline GDPgrowth rate climbs up by around 170bps in the post election year

In our opinion irrespective of which national party led alliance comesto power as long as the coalition is stable domestic dynamics willcontinue to carry a bias for incremental improvement hereon

However if there is a ldquopolicy uncertaintyrdquo shock in the form of afractured mandate our model shows that there could be around USD1bn of portfolio outflows within a span of two months
