AUDI 4.0 TFSI engine with cylinder on

demand(COD)

The new 4.0 TFSI engine has a powerful V8 with twin turbochargers, is

equipped with “cylinder on demand” technology. When operating at part

load, four of its cylinders are deactivated. This reduces fuel consumption

by an average of 5%. Active noise control system reduces the noise and

vibration created by the engine when it is switched on to 4 cylinder

mode. On the new 4.0 TFSI, cylinders are deactivated if the load on the

engine is low. It take effects depending on engine speed, is between

about 25 and 40 percent of maximum torque, in other words about 120

and 250 Nm. In this operating range the mean effective pressure rises to

eight bar. Coolant temperature must be at least 30°C and third gear or

higher must have been selected. The engine must be running at more

than idle speed, namely between 960 and 3,500 rpm. If these

preconditions are satisfied, the system closes the inlet and exhaust

valves of two cylinders on each bank. The V8 continues to run as a V4

with a regular firing order, but with the mixture in only two cylinders

instead of four being ignited on each revolution of the crankshaft.

Instead of 1 – 5 – 4 – 8 – 6 – 3 – 7 – 2, the firing order is then 1 – 4 – 6 –

AUDI e-diesel and e-ethanol

Audi has developed new CO₂-neutral fuels. The new technology

involves that the Microorganisms utilize solar energy to produce

synthetic ethanol and synthetic diesel from carbon dioxide and water.

The process is relatively simple; fuels are produced from CO₂ and salt

water with the help of solar energy. The fuel is produced in a specially

developed solar converter system.

The fuel is generated when it utilises the co2 from the industries and the

salt water or brackish water. The sun provides the energy to process

that the organisms need to produce the fuel. co2, water & solar energy

set the circulating production process in the motion in which billions of

microorganisms produce fuel. By the separation of water from the fuel

produced the Audi e-diesel or e-ethanol are filled in filling stations and is

Page 8: Yic-e magazine

used in Audi cars. These fuels does not cause any harm to the

environment.

2015 BMW i8

BMW has designed a plug-in hybrid sports car offering the nimble

performance and outstanding efficiency. The passenger chamber has

made with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The engine is built

with 1.5L petrol engine with twin power turbo technology. The three-

cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170 kW & 231 hp

which drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW & 131 hp electric motor

draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a

conventional domestic power socket, and sends its power to the front

axle. The i8 enables a range of up to 37 kilometres in the EU test cycle

and a top speed of 250 km/h on electric power alone. While using the

both electrical energy and engine energy it boost ups 0-100kmph in just

4.4sec. The BMW i8 is the first BMW production model to be powered by

a three-cylinder petrol engine. The three-cylinder's BMW Twin Power

Turbo technology comprises a high-performance turbocharging system

and direct petrol injection with high-precision injectors positioned

Page 12: Yic-e magazine

between the valves. BMW Twin Power Turbo technology and low

internal friction improve both fuel efficiency and torque characteristics.

The electric motor develops maximum power of 96 kW/131 hp and instantly produces its maximum torque of 250Nm. The electric motor drives the car to a top speed of 120kmph. The motor derives its energy from the lithium-ion battery which is centrally mounted underneath the floor of the vehicle. The rear wheels of the BMW i8 are driven by the petrol engine via a six-speed automatic transmission, while the front wheels receive their power from the electric motor. The high-end chassis and suspension technology of the BMW i8 is based on a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, whose aluminium components have been specially designed and manufactured in order to optimise both their weight and strength & the Electric Power Steering offers easy handling. 2. DEVELOPMENTS IN

MECHANICAL FIELD

Non-destructive testing

-Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques

used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material

without causing damage.

Types of NDT:-

• Visual • Ultrasonic • Dye penetrant inspection (DPI) • Shearography and many more techniques.

1. VISUAL INSPECTION:- Basic principle: illuminate the test specimen with light and examine the specimen with the eye by using Magnifying Glass, Magnifying Mirror, and Microscope. 2. ULTRA SONIC TESTING:- Based in the propagation of ultrasonic waves in the object or material tested. It absorbs or deflects the sound Waves, which are then detected as changes in the waves. 3. DYE PENETRANT INSPECTION:- It is also called as also called liquid penetrant inspection (LPI). It is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials. Inspection steps for LPI:- 1. Pre-cleaning 2. Application of penetrant 3. Excess Penetrant Removal 4. Application of Developer 5. Inspection 6. Post Cleaning

Page 15: Yic-e magazine

1. Section of material with a surface-breaking crack that is not visible to

the naked eye.

2. Penetrant is applied to the surface.

3. Excess penetrant is removed.

4. Developer is applied, rendering the crack visible.

4. SHEAROGRAPHY:- Shearography or speckle pattern shearing

interferometry is a measuring and testing method. It uses coherent

light or coherent sound waves to provide information about the quality of

different materials in non-destructive testing. It is widely used in

aerospace and automotive works. When a surface area is illuminated

with a highly coherent laser light, a stochastical interference pattern is

created. This interference pattern is called a speckle, and is projected on

a rigid camera's CCD chip.

Page 16: Yic-e magazine

A vacuum shearography hood and data display unit is applied to a

composite structure to check for defects. An indication of a possible

defect appears as the ripple pattern on the bottom right of the data

screen.

Cryogenic engine

A Cryogenic technology is a process of involvement of including of

usage of rocket propellants at Cryogenic temperature. It can be

combination of liquid fuels such as:- Liquid –Oxygen (LOX), and liquid

Hydrogen (LH2) as an oxidizer and fuel in the different mixtures of

proportions. The mixture of fuels offers the highest energy efficiency for

the rocket engines that produces very high amount of thrust. Here, the

Oxygen remains liquid only at the temperature below (-183⁰C) and

Hydrogen at below (-253⁰C). This is a type of rocket engine that is

functionally designed to use the oxidizer which must be refrigerated in

the liquid state. Sometimes, the liquid Nitrogen (LN2) is sometimes used

as fuel because the exhaust is also Nitrogen. Nitrogen is a non-pollutant

gas and during exhaust no other harmful gases are produced. Hence its

efficiency is very high than any other Jet engines.

Advanced tools in manufacturing technology

The cutting tools and tool holders are now manufactured with internal

cooling technology so that there will be no need of separate coolant

pipes.

The above figure shows the redesigned BIG Daishowa Hi-Jet Holder.

The Hi-Jet Holder improves hole making by forcing coolant through the

cutting tool coolant holes, allowing operations at faster speeds and

feeds. It also minimizes overheating and work piece distortion. By using

this technology many cutting tools are designed for better performance.

Friction stir welding

Friction-stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process. Heat is

generated between the tool and material which leads to a very soft

region near the FSW tool. Then mechanically it intermixes the two

pieces of metal at the place of the joint, and then the softened metal

(due to the elevated temperature) can be joined using mechanical

pressure which is applied by the tool.

ADVANTAGES:-

1. Low environmental impact.

2. Improved safety due to the absence of toxic fumes

DISADVANTAGES:-

1. Large down forces required with heavy-duty clamping necessary to

hold the plates together

2. Exit hole left when tool is withdrawn.

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of the air spring is to restrict the vibration at a desirable level as per requirements. Higher rail vehicle speeds generally results in increased vibrations in the car body, which has a negative impact on ride comfort. The suspension of the vehicle has to be modified in order to reduce the vibration and journey should be comfortable i.e. Jerk free journey. It is always desirable to keep the vibration level as low as possible by introducing damping. One of the most important techniques used in the present problem for improving damping is utilizing the air spring in place of helical spring, because due to damping the helical spring gets break up and which causes the serious accident. One of the techniques used in the present problem for improving damping is utilizing the air spring in place of helical spring. This paper consists of two different parts: a theoretical analysis of the problem and an experimental work. In railway vehicles, air springs are used for improving comfort for the passengers and for the prediction of the vibrations in the car body. The design concept evolved from this research work in trusses and frames, transporting system and rail coaches where higher damping is required, which can be made safely by utilizing the air spring system. This system is also help full to reduce the maintenance cost in transportationsystem.

4. Reverse engineering

What Is Reverse Engineering?

Reverse engineering is also called back engineering, is the process of

extracting knowledge or design information from anything man-made

and re-producing it or reproducing anything based on the extracted

information. Reverse engineering is very common in such diverse fields

as software engineering, entertainment, automotive, consumer products,

microchips, chemicals, electronics, and mechanical designs.

For example if a company has come with a product if they lost their

documentation of that particular product then reverse engineering is

used to know how the product has been developed.

Reverse engineering of machines:-

As computer-aided design (CAD) has become more popular, reverse

engineering has become a viable method to create a 3D virtual model of

Page 24: Yic-e magazine

an existing physical part for use in 3D CAD, CAM, CAE or other

software. The reverse-engineering process involves measuring an object

and then reconstructing it as a 3D model. The physical object can be

measured using 3D scanning technologies like CMMs, laser

scanners, structured light digitizers, or Industrial CT Scanning.

5. NEXT GENERATION

Rotary engine in Mazda RX-7 The Japanese car manufacturer is going to unveil the Mazda RX-7 with

the unbelievable rotary engine which produced more power than the

engines present in this era.

The rotary engine has 3 features:-

1. New dimensions – The engine stroke has lengthened by reducing the

width of rotor housing & increasing the trochodial radius & eccentricity,

this accelerates the rapid growth in fire which means faster in

combustion & improved fuel economy. This results the improved thermal

efficiency and increased torque at all engine speeds.

2. Direct injection technology.

3. Aluminium housing which is compact in size and light in weight.

Next Generation of Rocket Engine

Generally any rocket engine burns the irrespective fuels to generate the

thrust. If any other engine has capacity to generate thrust efficiently then

it can be called rocket engine. Currently NASA scientists are working on

“Xenon Ion Engine‟ which accelerates the ions or atomic particles to

extremely high to create thrust more effectively and efficiently by usage

of electrostatic or electromagnetic force.

Various ion thrusters have been designed and they all generally fit under

two categories. The thrusters are categorized as

either electrostatic or electromagnetic. The main difference is how the

ions are accelerated is:-

-Electrostatic ion thrusters use the Coulomb force and are categorized

as accelerating the ions in the direction of the electric field.

Page 27: Yic-e magazine

-Electromagnetic ion thrusters use the Lorentz force to accelerate the

ions.

Power supplies for ion thrusters are usually solar panels but, at

sufficiently large distances from the Sun, nuclear power is used.
