Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera.

Dear Scholars,

The year 2015 has been a very remarkable year for Yayasan Khazanah as we have achieved so many milestones at the same time being the nation’s preferred premier scholarship programme, and for that I am forever grateful to Allah S.W.T. The year 2015 has seen many new initiatives being rolled out and the completion of the previous ones – all geared to ensure that YK is effective in its operation as well as grooming and producing talents for the nation. The year 2015 also marked the year of preparation for our 10th birthday in 2016, a decade in 2016, filled with pride but also with humility. We are all looking forward to our 10th birthday in July 2016.

What does turning ten years mean for all of us in YK?

For me personally, turning ten years means that an organisation is entering a new phase. Entering a new phase would mean that there is a certain level of maturity that can be expected out of an organisation. Maturity can be expressed and identified through in which the way a decision is made and to what purpose it serves i.e. for the greater good of mankind to that of creating impacts to the community and nation, at large. We have learnt that there should be a good balance between the head and the heart, between work and play, action and contemplation, passion and repose. What I have just described signifies greatly on our intent and leadership model to develop our scholars. These values and competencies would be further internalised and embraced by both the YK team and YK scholars.

YK in the past has its own learning and with this we learn how to become better. The journey, thus far is very rewarding and fulfilling and we hope to continue recording superior performance in the years to come.

As for the year 2016, I hope that Yayasan Khazanah continues to be the preferred avenue in the sphere of selecting, supporting, grooming and nurturing exceptional individuals who will eventually be the future leaders of Malaysia and brethren countries in Asia. To the YK Team, I would like to thank each and every member for their astounding commitment in the past decade, making sure the mission of Khazanah pledge in ensuring continued development of human capital that Malaysia seek to advance, lives on with the aspiration. To all the beloved scholars, continue to fly the YK flag high!

YK was established in 2006. Since inception until 2015, there are a total of 536 scholarships awarded across 4 programmes.

There are 65 Global and Watan

scholars graduated in 2014 and

2015; 66% has gotten or identified

placement thus far. Placement

process usually starts 6 months

prior to the graduation. Deferment

request are reviewed on a case-to-

case basis based on the approved

guidelines.

and high-achieving Malaysians to pursue Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies at

Yayasan Khazanah, in collaboration with Khazanah Nasional's partner and investee

companies, is offering the Khazanah Asia Scholarship to deserving candidates from

Bangladesh and Indonesia to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate education

YK Pre - Departure Briefing

YK Pre - Departure Briefing is a session designed by YK for the Khazanah Global scholars before they leave the country to pursue their studies either in the UK, US or Australia. During the session, scholars will be briefed on their responsibilities as YK scholars, the expectations, emergency contact details, and etc. In the 2015 edition, YK has invited fellow alumni and the Board of Trustees to share their experiences as well as giving advise on how to maximise the individual potentials to the YK scholars that will be studying abroad.

the YK Global scholars. One of the YK Board of

Trustees, Tan Sri Dato’ Azman bin Mokhtar, was present to

have a dialogue with the scholars.

It has been a year since the inception of YK structured Leadership Programme which is dubbed as YK Premier Scholars Programme (YKPSP). YKPSP has been designed to develop and build the core leadership competencies (YK3P) of the scholars using the 4-box learn-ing mix approach which are; 1. Formal-Based Learning (FBL), 2. Yayasan Khazanah Scholar’s

Appreciation Night “YKSAN”

YK Scholar Appreciation Night is an

annual dinner organise by Yayasan

Khazanah. The objective of YKSAN

is to provide a platform for scholars to

socialise and network among each

other. Apart from that, the dinner also

gives opportunity for scholars to inter-

act with YK BOT as well as introduc-

ing the new scholars to YK Family.

“Black Tie Dinner” was chosen as the

theme for 2015.

YK Events serve the purpose of Yayasan Khazanah in several folds, namely; engagement, scholar’s development and providing exposure to enhance their leadership skills. Apart from giving the scholars the hands-on experience and the knowledge of event management, YK Events also allow the scholars to interact with scholars from the other scholarship programmes, with the YK Team and alternatively getting the scholars to be involved in community service. There are three main events that are held annually.

Yayasan Khazanah Corporate Respon-sibility Day “YK CR Day”, is introduced as an initiative to instill leadership val-ues. One of the leadership values that YK is trying to embed in the scholars are giving back to the society and envi-ronment. This year, YK have chosen “The Road to Discovery” as the theme for YK CR Day. YK has invited the orphans from Rumah Titian Kaseh along with our scholars to experience a once-in-a-lifetime experience exploring the PETRONAS Twin Towers as well as experiential learning activities at PETROSAINS.

One of the important aspects of M&M (Monitoring & Management of scholars) that YK focus on is engagement. Face-to-face engagement is conducted at least once a year. Throughout the year, the Scholarship Managers continuously communicate with their respective scholars. The medium of communication varies from WhatsApp group, email, Videocon or telephone call. The discussion during engagement focuses on scholars’ academic performance, co-curricular activities, opportunities as a student in their respective schools or universities as well as their general well-being.

Transition from KLCC to Mercu UEM, KL Sentral Office 16

The end of 2015 and the very beginning of January witnessed the official transition of Yayasan Khazanah from its KLCC office to the new building at Level 27, Mercu UEM. Therefore, from January 2016 onwards, all the business and corporate operations under the name of Yayasan Khazanah will take place at the Mercu UEM office. The transition was initiated to better serve the purpose of Yayasan Khazanah that acts as value distribution agent for the nation’s growth. The new office is occupied by Yayasan Khazanah as well other entity such as Yayasan Hasanah and Think City Sdn. Bhd.

YK Outreach Programme 19

YK Outreach Programme is one of the initiatives by YK to increase the awareness amongst local students and teachers about the opportunities and the available scholarship programmes provided by YK. Last year in 2015, YK visited 18 selected top schools nationwide; covering urban, sub-urban, Sabah and Sarawak. Apart from giving the students and counsellors comprehension on the scholarships offered, YKOP also set as a pedestal to engage with the economically challenged background individuals.

YK Counsellor Programme & Scholarship Briefing to MRSM & SBP’s Principals

YK Counselor Programme , 22 – 24 April 2015 The YK Counselor Programme for 2015 was conducted at The Corus Hotel .There were 35 counselors from schools all over Malaysia that participated in this programme.

The main objective of both programme conducted by YK is to enriched and developed the selected school’s Counselors so that they are able to develop intervention programmes for students at their respective schools, providing students with the environment where potentials and leadership capabilities can be developed further. Guidance on career planning and opportunities in Malaysia were also shared during the programme.

The briefing is done to enlighten the MRSM & SBP’s principals about the available YK Scholarships and the structures of YK being the premier scholarship provider.

2015

We would like to congratulate our

Poobathy of USM, for emerging

as a Silver Medalist in the Penang

Urban Aquathlon in May 2015.

Ranjetta is currently pursuing her

doctorate studies in Universiti

Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.

She also competed in her USM

Annual Sports Games and also

received Silver Medal in the 3000m

that she competed in.

MALAYSIAN GAMES 2015

The Sheffield Malaysian Games was

held on the 21 February 2015 at the

University of Sheffield. We are delighted

to informed that our scholars have

emerged champions in one of the series.

INTERNATIONAL HISTORY BOWL AND BEE COMPETITION 2015

The “International History Bowl and Bee 2015” Malaysia round was held on the 8th of March, Sunway International School. The History Bowl is a group competition where students compete in teams where participants were tested with quizzes of world history while the History Bee is an individual competition similar to the more common spelling bee. Our scholar, from KYS, Muhammad Ammar Yaser Bin Sulaiman, and his team was placed

second and qualified for the Asian Championship. For the History Bee, Muhammad Ammar Yaser was overall

4th best.

14 YEAR OLD SWAM 6.5KM ACROSS

PULAU KAPAS, TERENGGANU

Congratulations to our scholar scholar,

Esfahan Bin Rostam Zulkhairi of KYS

for finishing the International Swimathon

which was held at Pulau Kapas,

Terengganu. Esfahan , 14 years old then,

swam for 6.5 km across the rapid current

of Pulau Kapas to emerge as a finisher for

the challenge. We would like to applause

him on his perseverance and tenacity. He

was also featured in the “Adventure”

section of The Star.

UNIVERSITY SCORED THE TAUB-

MAN CENTER URBAN PRIZE

Massive congratulations to our scholar

Suthen Thomas Paradatheth (PG), of

Harvard University for winning The

Taubman Center Urban Prize by the

State & Local Government Public Policy

Competition 2015 of Harvard University.

His PAE Paper on Car-Sharing & Public

Parking in Boston has been used to

advise the City of Boston’s Mayor Office

in responding to car-sharing organiza-

tions. His paper has also been nominat-

ed by the Harvard University as the

“Outstanding Policy Analysis Exercise

Award”.

TEOH HONG KEN TRIUMPHED

GLOBAL RESEARCH INTERNSHIP

PROGRAM, WHARTON SCHOOL

Teoh Hong Ken (UG), of University of

Pennsylvania emerged as champion

of the “Global Research Internship

Program” organized by Wharton School

of Business . His proposal titled Empiri-

cal Research in Finance” awarded him

the opportunity to serve as a research

assistant at a foreign university or think

tank and conduct business-related

research for 8-12 weeks during the

summer months.

IRINA RASIT AWARDED TIN PLATE

WORKER’S PRIZE

We would like to extend our heartiest

congratulations to our Global Scholar,

Irina Mahmad Rasit, MEng Biomaterials

& Tissue Engineering of Imperial

College, for being awarded with Tin

Plate Worker’s Prize. She was the highest

overall scorer and awarded with Engineer-

ing Dean’s List for Year 2014/2105. Her

hard work also paid off when she was

offered a direct PhD route by MIT under

MIT Scholarship. Irina have certainly made

Yayasan Khazanah as well as the country

proud with your achievement.

PERDANA FELLOWS INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
