YLE Flyers Listening Part 5 Teachers Notes

    Description

This activity gives students practice in listening carefully and drawing what they hear.

    Time required:

    40 minutes

    Materials required:

YLE Sample papers downloaded from the website: https://www.teachers.cambridgeesol.org/ts/exams/younglearnersandforschools/yleflyers

Flyers Listening Part 5 recording downloaded from the website: https://www.teachers.cambridgeesol.org/ts/exams/younglearnersandforschools/yleflyers

Coloured pencils or pens for each student (black, blue, brown, green, grey, orange, pink, purple, red and yellow)

Aims: to introduce students to Part 5 of the Flyers Listening paper

to give students practice in following instructions to colour, draw and write Procedure

    1. Make sure the children can see each other as easily as possible. Ask about half of the students to stand up, the rest remain sitting. Go around and quietly give some students something to hold (a pen, a book, etc) or to wear (a hat, gloves, etc).

    2. Tell them you are going to call out a description and they must call out the name of the person youre describing. E.g., a boy whos standing near the window; a girl whos sitting with a book in her right hand, a tall girl whos wearing glasses and a hat, etc. Avoid using colours if possible so you focus on positions and actions. Keep the game fast and for no longer than about 3 minutes.

    3. Hand out the Sample Task to each student. Ask the students what place the picture shows. (airport)

    4. Ask students to work in pairs and label as many things as they can in the picture. This can be a competition and you can give a time limit of 4 minutes to get students excited and co-operating.

    5. Check the words they have labelled. Ask for the spelling of some words, especially those which include letters children get confused or which have difficult spelling.

    6. Now ask the students to tell you where certain things are. Encourage them to give as much detail as possible in their answers, e.g.:

Where is the man with the beard? (Hes standing near the window next to a suitcase.)

Where is the girl with glasses? (Shes sitting next to the boy whos drinking Coke, near a big suitcase.)

Where is the baby? (Hes behind a suitcase, next to his mother.)

Ask some questions to focus childrens attention on the fact that there may be similar objects/people in the picture, e.g.:

Can you see the bag on the floor? (There are four bags.) Ask them what the differences are big/small, suitcase/bag; in front of/behind/next to/near)

How many women are there? (three: the mother with a baby; the woman in the hat who is holding some paper and another woman in uniform but without a hat)

    7. Now explain that the students will listen to a conversation and they should follow the instructions to colour certain things in the picture. They need to be sure the colour the right part of the picture. They will also need to draw and write something on the picture.

    8. Do one or two as an example with them. E.g.

Can you see the boy drinking a coke? Colour his shoes green.

Can you see the man with a beard standing up? Draw a dog in front of him and colour the dog black.

    9. Play the recording. Pause after the first section and check they have understood by asking the children to tell you what they have to do.

    10. Ask students to follow the instructions and colour, draw or write. Play the recording twice.

    11. They can later check with other students to see if their pictures look the same.

    12. Explain that in the test they must ONLY colour, draw and write what they are told. If they do anything else they will lose marks. Assure the students that their drawing and colouring does not have to be very good. They must not worry about that as long as they follow the instructions.

    Suggested follow-up activities

    1. Hand out a blank sheet of paper to each student and make sure all students have coloured pencils or pens to use.

    2. Tell them you are going to describe a friend of yours. You dont have a photo of your friend so youd like a picture instead. You unfortunately cannot draw but you are sure your students can help you.

    3. Read out the whole description first and ask students not to draw now but to listen carefully and imagine the man in their heads.

    4. Then read out the description one step at a time giving students plenty of time to draw and colour.

    5. My friend is a man. He is tall and fat. He always wears a big blue hat because he has no hair. His eyes are small and green. He has a very small nose. He has a black moustache and a curly green beard. Hes wearing a pink t-shirt and purple striped trousers. Hes holding an orange umbrella in his left hand. Hes standing next to a bus stop.

    6. You can ask students to draw their own pictures of people, rooms etc and dictate them to their partner or a small group. This way they will not only practise listening but also vocabulary, writing and speaking and have fun.
