DEAR CADILLAC AREA COMMUNITY,As activist Cesar Chavez said “we cannot seek achievement for ourselves andforget about the progress and prosperity of our community.” He continued tosay “our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needsof others, for their sakes and for our own.” These principles are ourishing at theCadillac Area YMCA.In 2009, the Cadillac Area YMCA opened the doors of our Dillon CommunityCenter. The achievement was realized through the giving and volunteer supportof several in the community. Notably, Dr. Don and Pat Lakin, Anne and MikeZdrowdski, and Mary and Thomas Dillon, along with others were key in seeing the organizationgrow. It took, however, the generosity of one more major supporter to take it to the next level –Baker College.Since 2008, Baker College has been an key member of the Cadillac Area YMCA team. BakerCollege – Cadillac Campus, through the leadership of Robert Vandellen, its then President, provided the land on which the facility now sits with a generous 99 year evergreen leasefor $1 per year, which renews annually automatically. The Baker College – Cadillac Campusgenerosity did not end there. It also donated $1,250,000 toward the YMCA’s construction. TheBaker College System, parent company of Baker of Cadillac based in Flint MI, then continuedthe investment in the Cadillac Area YMCA by loaning an additional $1,018,745 to help the Yrestructure its construction debt and keep its doors open.So perhaps the biggest news of 2015, came to us on January 1, 2016 when the Baker CollegeSystem, in its continued dedication to the Cadillac area community, signed a new loan agreementthat forgave over $817,033 of the YMCA’s outstanding loan. With a commitment from the YMCAto pay $175,000 over the next 5 years, Baker College System will in effect donate the remaindermaking the YMCA debt free. While this amazing gift is not re ected in the 2015 nancialsincluded in this report, it is the biggest news of the year and secures our Y for the generations tocome. Our year also culminated with a tremendous gift from Cadillac Mortgage providing the remaining$26,000 needed to purchase the timing system for our Cadillac Currents Swim Team. Finally ourY received a $10,000 grant from Consumers Energy to support our expanding Early ChildhoodProgramming. The YMCA would not exist if not for the generosity of the individuals, families, and businesseswithin this community who believe and support its mission. These wonderful gifts do not meanour charitable mission is complete, rather they are recognition of the good being done. It is onlypart of the Y’s growth. If you are interested in joining the YMCA, making a nancial contribution,or donating your time, contact Dan Smith, Paul King, or Kurt Baney at the Y to learn more.

Meet the Larrancefamily duo ,Derek and Corbin, who participatedtogether in the
“Anyone Can Tri”.This was Corbin’ssecond yearparticipating inthe triathlon, andhe was excitedto compete atthe adult levelthis year. Dad hadasked Corbin ifhe wanted him to
“Tri” with him; hisresponse was “Yes”. Corbin’s favoritepart about competing this year is thathe beat his dad . Derek said “Heis quite an inspiration for a lot ofpeople because despite his autismhe is extremely athletic. Best yet hedoesn’t care that he is athletic… andhe will be able to rub it in my face forthe next year that he beat me in the
‘Anyone Can Tri’. We are excited toparticipate again next year.”

It is run by a coordinator wholeads games and exercise as well as talks about healthyfood choices. Tween Zone is a safe environment whereyouth can learn, grow, and play with peers. The space is

AFTER SCHOOL TUTORINGFive elementary schools in the Cadillac Area Public andPine River Area School Districts are participating in anAfterschool Tutoring Program. Through the ve day a weekprogram, 372 students (2015) were able to bene t froma healthy snack and/or meal, physical activity, nutritioneducation and 3 days per week, of academic tutoring. Thecombination of food and physical activity helps studentsbe refreshed and ready to learn when they go to tutoring. The results are impressive. Academic Assessments at PineRiver show, 48% of the students increased their readingby one level, 43% increased their reading by 2, 3 or morelevels. Session 5 students in 1st and 2nd grades atKenwood Elementary increased their oral reading level byan average of 4.4 levels.
MY Y STORYThe After School Tutoringprogram run by the YMCAhas been a blessing for myfamily and more importantlymy daughter. Ellie had dif cultywith math and reading and hadfallen behind in both areas. TheY’s program at Forest View gaveEllie the extra support that sheneeded in both subjects, andreally expanded her ability tostay consistent in her education.I loved the fact that it includedfun physical activity every day.It made it feel to her more likefun instead of work. It allowedEllie to build a relationship with the tutors which madeher feel more connected and
invested in the program, and ledto better results . Thank youfor helping my daughter. Theimpact that you’ve made will bethere forever .

FREE 7TH GRADE MEMBERSHIPThis year’s free 7th grade membership program received a grant from theCadillac Area Community Foundation - Youth Advisory Committee (CACF-YAC). This grant allowed for program expansion beyond just CAPSstudents. Overall an average of 34 teens per month were able to utilize thiscommunity bene t. The Y chose to focus this program on 7th grade teensdue to the observation that this time of life presents an increased amountof social pressure and desire for independence. The YMCA teen programs
strive to provide a positive environment where teens can be mentored in a recreational setting that allows social connection with peers and age appropriate independence . Our hope is these teens nd ways to createhealthy habits of recreation in their early teen years. We are grateful forthe support of CACF-YAC and others in ful lling this mission.

PRESCHOOLJoe Hughes’ son Dominic is a participant in one of ourY Preschool classrooms. Dominic struggled to come topreschool the rst month and Dad was ready to throwthe towel in until I asked him to start staying at preschoolwith Dominic until he felt safe. Dad, who works 2nd shift, struggled with this because of fatigue, but did it for about3 weeks. Dominic just needed a sense of security whilebeing here, and truly tried to dominate Dad while he was
here. Dad however, did not just pay attention to his son, hebuilt relationships with other students in the class whichalso helped Dominic build friendships . Dominic is nowcoming in confdent , feeling safe and willing to let Dadretreat home for some much needed rest. I would like tothank Joe for pushing his own needs aside to assist in hisson’s adjustment to preschool and also for being a greatrole model on how to build/establish new relationships andfriends in one of our Y Preschool programs.

HEALTHY EATINGTo compliment the bene ts of physical activity through exerciseand sports, a Healthy Eating program was added this year. Withfunding through a Walmart State Giving grant, we acquiredportable kitchen equipment for food preparation demonstrationsand Healthy Eating classes. We also added healthy eating andnutrition lessons to other programs. Over 50 Senior Fit classmembers participated in a Make Health Your Hobby workshopthat included identifying healthy food choices. Preschoolers
learned to choose water as a healthy drink and used fruit to makeavored water. Food and Fun curriculum activities such as makingindividual smoothies, sampling new foods, choosing healthy fatsand fewer sugary drinks were enjoyed by Youth attending DillonDay Camp at the Y and Camp Torenta day and resident camps. One of the participants in our rst Cooking Matters class learnedways to get her family to eat whole grains. She shared therecipes we made in class with her family and said “they liked whatwe made and couldn’t believe it was healthy”.

FITNESSSENIOR FITThe Senior Fit Program held at the Y on Tuesday and Thursday has 75 seniors in threeclasses. The seniors range in age from 55 to 92 and most have chronic conditions thatthey must deal with. Participants are usually referred to the program as a continuedrehabilitation for existing conditions or physical challenges.
Y STAFF STORYOne of the participants , Mark Pitrago, is 57 years old. He started Senior Fit atMunson Healthcare Cadillac and has continued with it at the Y. Mark suffers from MS.He is the most inspirational person the class participants have met. We have alllearned not to tell Mark what he can or can’t do. He determines what he is capableof doing. He tries most everything even though his balance is affected and he islegally blind. He loves to ride the bike. In 2014, he rode the bike 208 miles which he
did mainly half an hour at a time each day he comes. He also works several machinesand lifts weights. He keeps himself v ery strong .
He proves to us that even though you may have a physical complaint or pain, youcan still get up, workout and stay ft . He also proves that all this can be done witha smile and a great attitude . He is an inspiration to us all . He lights up theroom when he comes to class.

MY Y STORYHello, I am Jesse. As of January 2016, I amon my second year as a member of theY. Tuesday and Thursday yoga with Ellenhas been my weekly routine for all this time. The childcare option is as helpful to me asa stay at home mama. Yoga was part of mylife as a Peace Corps volunteer from 2001-2004 but I had not established another
routine since having my three girls. It is soeasy to get lost in motherhood and givingall our time to our children and our partnerand our jobs....leaving very little time forself-care. Taking this time for me hashelped me be more present in other areasof my life. Having an hour of quiet focus isso incredibly rare in my daily life. I want tomodel self-care for my girls. Taking care ofourselves should be our top priority . Otherthings fall into place if we put ourselves
rst and focus on the inner work we need to
do. The class is ideal for all people.

AQUATICSSAFETYAROUND WATERWith all of the lakes in the area and the largenumber of locations to swim, we are proud to kickoff the YMCA Safety Around Water program, whichis designed to teach children basic water safetyskills. Thanks to a Missaukee Area CommunityFoundation grant and Lake City Area Schools makingit a priority to use time in their school day to address
this problem, we are making sure that every LakeCity child in fourth grade has access to learning water safety skills.
I have been teaching YMCA swim lessons for 14years and running our Y swim program for 13 years.I have witnessed the benefts of 100s of childrenlearning swimming skills and how to be safe aroundwater. I think it is vital that all children have accessto a program like this and that we work together inan effort to prevent another tragic drowning death.Whatever we can do to help keep our children safe,we need to work together to do it. This is why Iam so pleased to partner with a school to ght thedevastating problem of accidental drownings. Thisprogram is designed to help reduce the number ofdrownings by teaching children what to do if they
nd themselves in the water unexpectedly.
This is a program that is much needed in our area tokeep our children strong and healthy . If you areinterested in nding out more information about thisprogram or ways that you can help please feel freeto contact me, [email protected] or bycalling the Y and asking for me. Thank you so muchfor all of the support thus far, and making the Y agreat place for community and family.
Anne Smith Zdrodowski,Aquatic Director
100 MILE CLUBFrom young to old we had over 90 members participate in our100 mile swim challenge for the 2015 year. 18 participants completed the challenge this year, 4 more than last year.Swimming is often viewed as an individual recreation, butwhat is often missed is the comradery of the swimmers whopushed each other and nished their goals together. At theY we recognize that anything we do takes perseverance and wecommend each member who completed this goal .
NOTESFROM COACHSwimming your frst year holds many challenges. When you join at 13, those challenges arecompounded by the distances required at thatage level. Tanaya Yonkman joined the teamfacing these challenges. She began the yearswimming Freestyle and Backstroke in meets. She worked hard developing these strokes, and bettered her individual times in each strokeby over 10 seconds. This alone was a greataccomplishment . However, what truly set herapart in a year where we saw great improvementacross the team is her drive and tenacity to beable to compete in all four strokes. Often shewould ask a coach to watch her stroke afterpractice, and would always take the advice of the coaches to heart. By the 5th meet, shecompleted her frst 100 Breaststroke. Shecompleted her goal on January 31st when shecompeted in the Individual Medley. Although herdedication is matched by many team members, her fo cus and drive to meet her goal was aninspiration to both swimmers and coaches alike.

*The Y Cadillac Currents compete in two leagues: the Michigan TeamSwim League (MTSL) and the West Michigan YMCA Swim League.
GOAL ACHIEVEDProject Completion: 2015 held great accomplishments in our goal to acquire anAquatic Timing System. Through generous donations we are bringing closure toour call to action. The new timing system and scoreboard should be up and installedbefore the start of our 2016-17 swim season. The scoreboard chosen will be able tocommunicate events, names of swimmers, swim times and places and link directlyto the electronic timing system. Overall, the system will support YMCA swim teamand masters swim program, as well as other competitive events held at the CadillacArea YMCA. We have received several donations throughout the campaign, and areproud to announce that through the generosity of these gifts and a $26,000 giftfrom Cadillac Mortgage , we are able to purchase the electronic scoreboard, themost costly part of the timing system. This brings us to the same level as the otherpools where we compete. A huge thanks to each donor and especially CadillacMortgage for their generous contributions and helping build a better us .

Anyone Can Tri fnishers, William age 11 and Wesley Gibson age 9, made up abrother team . Wesley, who is blind, was aided in the competition by his brother inboth the bike and the run portion and his mother in the swim portion. William hadbeen inspired by a family friend who has similar abilities, he made his mind upto give the “Anyone Can Tri” a chance and chose to do so with his brother Wesleywho is differently abled. One of their mottos as a family is to “Focus on the abili-ties” said Janet Gibson, the mother of the two boys. She has been encouraged by what her two sons were able to accomplish by doing so.
