Heart Rate Monitor

Metronome-set to 100 bpm

Procedure:

Be sure the bike is calibrated

Explain the concept of the test to the client

Properly adjust the seat height-when the pedal is at its lowest point the knee should be

straight with the ball of the foot on the pedal and the leg stretched

Allow the client to practice the pace of 50 revolutions per minute with the metronome

Set the initial workload at 150 kgm/min

Client will work at the first workload for 3 minutes

Count the heart rate at the second and third minutes-if these HRs vary by more than 5

beats extend the ride for an extra minute or until a stable value is obtained

During the last 15 seconds of stage 1, measure the HR. Change the workload by checking

the steady-state HR using the chart below ex: if the HR is 94 bpm proceed to 450

kgm/min or 1.5 kg for stage 2

The client will then proceed in the same column for the remaining stages

Continue to record heart rate for each remaining stage at the 2 and 3 minute marks

The HRs at the end of the second and third minutes may not differ by more than five bpm-

if they differ by more than five bpm have them continue for another minute

To ensure an accurate test at least two stages must be completed to plot the appropriate

HRs

Instruct the client to perform a cool-down
