54 YOGA LIVING Fall 2011

FOR SOME, the thought of tiny needles being insertedinto specific body points seems more than a little in-timidating! What typically motivates people to con-

sider acupuncture treatment? The most commonly statedreasons include:

• “I’m curious about acupuncture, I’ve heard alot about it, and I think it could help me.”

• “I have a condition that I can’t find help foranywhere else.”

• “Someone has told me such great things aboutacupuncture that I want to try it.”

In reality, the Chinese have used acupuncture and medicinalherbs for thousands of years to treat every kind of ailment. For much of China’s history, acupuncture was the onlymedicine available to most of the population, and knowledgewas passed between generations. Eventually, in the 1950s, a government sanction created Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) to enable access by the general public.

According to most accounts, thehistory of acupuncture in theUnited States began in the 1970s with then President RichardNixon’s visit to China and his curiosity about the procedure. Chinese immigrants in thiscountry already practiced acupuncture, but no educationalfacilities existed nor were there registration requirements forpractitioners. Now numerous schools offer acupuncturetraining, and there are thousands of practitioners across theUnited States with specialties that include cancer, diabetes, infertility, gynecology, musculoskeletal pain, autoimmunedisorders, gastrointestinal disorders, macular degenerationof the eye, eating disorders, and others. As acupuncture andherbs have increasingly been used to manage these conditions, practitioners have refined their treatments based on availability of resources and expanded understanding andare able to achieve positive results with specific outcomes.

How Acupuncture Works

Scientific studies have provided genuine evidence thatacupuncture can ease pain and treat a variety of ailmentsusing a technique that involves placing hair-thin needles in pressure points, called acupoints, throughout the body. The needle stimulation of these points is believed to promote the body's natural capacity to heal and to enhancebody function.

Theories about how acupuncture works differ greatly. Chinese philosophy views the body as containing opposingyin and yang forces. When those forces are in balance, thebody is healthy. Energy, called qi (pronounced "chee"), flowsthrough the body along pathways known as meridians andkeeps the yin and yang balanced. When the energy flow isblocked, a person becomes ill. With approximately 2,000acupoints identified, the concept behind acupuncture is thatstimulating these points with needles or pressure relieves ob-structions in the flow of energy and enables the body to heal.

The Western view is that acupuncture probably worksthrough stimulation of the central nervous system (brain andspinal cord) to release chemicals known as neurotransmittersand hormones. These chemicals dull pain, boost the immunesystem, and regulate various body functions.

What Acupuncture OffersSo what does all of this mean forthe average person? Acupunctureoffers access to a form of medicinethat has been in use for a prolongedperiod. Historically, it has helpedmillions of people to treat a broadvariety of conditions with almostno side effects or contraindications.Nearly every current practitioneris licensed or registered, which assures a baseline of knowledgeand standards, including clean-needle

technique. More insurance companies now cover acupuncture, although probably still fewer than half. Alsomore physicians now recommend and refer patients toacupuncture specialists, largely for pain and musculoskeletalconditions, but also for conditions involving fertility, cystitis, and autoimmune disorders.

To be fair, acupuncture treatment is not appropriate forevery situation. Neither does it guarantee that every personwho seeks it will get relief or see improvement in a particularcondition. Today’s acupuncture reflects the latest researchinto the mechanisms of body function and incorporates outsideknowledge regarding point choices and goal setting fortreatment. Although philosophies of change differ, the potential for learning in settings centered in alternativehealing seems endless.

Acupuncture should, however, be one option in a compre-hensive look at the choices for treating many conditions.Note that it is important to seek out a practitioner who hasa record of success in managing the condition to be treated,as the range of acupuncture practice types is wide. It may benecessary to visit more than one practitioner to find the specialist best suited to treating a particular disorder.

Why Consider Acupuncture?

Healthy Family | by Dr. Mark Wiley

EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE IS MADE UPOF ENERGY AND IS VIBRATING AT SPECIFICFREQUENCIES. There is dense energy, loose energy,

erratic energy, calm energy, high frequencies and low frequencies. The human body, too, is nothing if not a physical body constructedof energetic vibrations. All aspects of health and wellbeing, especially pain, are tied to energeticfrequencies. The problem is, most of us who suffer chronic painonly get the "pain channel" and keep ourselves "tuned in" to it 24/7.Thus the "pain frequency" is maintained, and our suffering is prolonged. Needlessly. If you tune in to an opera channel on your radio, you will get opera, not country music. If you dial your mother on the cell phone, youwon't get cousin Betty. If you say bad things about people, you willlose friends. "You reap what you sow," is a good example of thepower of attraction, the power of like energy meeting like energy. If your mental energy is vibrating at a low frequency, you will havetrouble studying, thinking or remembering names, places or events. If your physical energy is blocked or sluggish, you will experienceaches and pains such as sciatica, headache, fibromyalgia and others. In short: low frequency = low function and poor health; high frequency = high functioning and good health. You must change your energetic frequency to feel better and live better.THE ENERGY BODYTraditional cultures around the world built their healing modelson correcting energetic imbalances in the body. Indeed, the role ofShamans in Siberia, Alaska and SE Asia was to eradicate "bad spirits"(i.e., negative energy) from the body to restore physical or mentalhealth in those suffering. The entire pantheon of Chinese and Indianhealing practices was built on the premise of energy systems andpathways in the body that, when blocked, cause pain and disease.Clearing these channels or centers of blocked energy (e.g., toxins, spasms) is what restores health to the ill, and offers relief to thepain sufferer.Perhaps the most common term used to talk about human energy,is Aura. This is a general term used to describe the color, mood orquality of five overlapping energy layers. These layers of energy (or"energy bodies") refer to the Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, Ethericand Physical energies that make up a human being.Energy is developed, stored and moved in the body through theadrenals, the organs, chakra centers and meridian pathways. There isa saying in traditional Chinese medicine that tells why we experiencepain: "Where there is energy blockage, there is pain. Where energymoves freely, there is no pain."The key to pain relief and lasting health, then, is to open the energychannels, raise your vibrational frequency and keep your energymoving at all times. There are a number of alternative therapies whoseprimary function is focused on just that. Let’s look at a few here.Qigong is an ancient Chinese system of energy cultivation. Alsocalled "breath work," qigong exercises balance energy in the bodythrough coordination of thought, breath and movement in specificsequences. The nucleus of qigong is the exercise of consciousness and vital energy. The goal being to circulate, build and balance qi (vital life-forceenergy) throughout the body to promote physical and mental health.

Regular practice of qigong exercises aid in regulating the functionsof the central nervous system. Along with exercising and controllingone's mind and body, qigong influences one's physical states andpathological conditions. There are both practitioner applied and individual self-regulatingqigong methods. If you are in serious pain and can find a reputablelocal practitioner, make an appointment. If not, there are goodinstructional programs available. Look into them.Reiki is a Japanese energy technique for reducing stress and induc-ing relaxation to help promote the free-flow of energy in the body.Unlike qigong, Reiki requires the "laying on of hands" of a practitionerin order for its benefits to be gained.Reiki practitioners lay their hands on patients in various configurationsthat are modeled on ancient Tibetan and Chinese powerful healingsymbols. It is believed that re-creating these symbols on the bodywill allow "God's energy" to flow from the universe, through thepractitioner and into the patient. This energy, which is vibratingat a high frequency, will lift the low energy of the sufferer to relievepain and illness.Reiki has become a popular healing modality among nurses in hospitals. The patient does not have to be awake for them to administer afew minutes of healing touch.ACUPRESSURE AND ACUPUNCTUREAll Chinese body-healing practices are based on the idea that energyflows through the body in channels called meridians. These transportenergy and life essence from organ to organ. Again, where there isslow energy or blockage, there is felt pain and soon disease.Acupressure is the non-invasive and non-needle offspring ofAcupuncture. Both work on the same theory, but acupressure doesnot require needles to affect a change in the patient. In both cases, the practitioner will either "needle" or apply finger pressure to specific points on the body. These points are numbered andnamed and have specific indications for application.Using a correct "prescription" of points, the practitioner can in effect change the energy in a patient, open their channels and help their energy move more freely. Again, when energy movesfreely... there is no pain or disease.Acupuncture and acupressure are both widely practiced today andworth looking into. They have been around for five thousandyears... not too shabby! These alternative therapies are just a small sampling of practicesthat are able to bring relief from pain and illness by correcting energetic imbalances in the body. They are based on thousandsof years of trial-and-error application and have an amazing trackrecord of success. If you have tried just about everything, and are still in pain, thenyou might want to ditch the mainstream idea of health. Instead, open your mind to these traditional ideas of the body being composed of energy. And that energy vibrates at various frequencies, affecting positively and negatively the mind, body, spirit and organs.Pain is caused when there is a blockage of this energy. These practices unblock your inherent life energies. Give them a try... pain relief may just be around the corner!
