EDITOR’S NOTE

3 YOGASATTVA

The Yoga Institute wishes best health and safety to you all. During this lockdown, we all must stay calm and balanced as together, the whole world is tackling this pandemic situation. Since we are surrounded by a deluge of fearful and negative news from every corner, it becomes imperative to look at the silver lining and keep our mind sane.

Although the lockdown has compelled everyone to stay indoors, it has unlocked a whole new system of learning. The Yoga Institute has opened its virtual doors for its signature online courses of 1 Month TTC, 3 Months TTC, 7 Months TTC, 1 Year TTC and 2 Years TTC along with the 21 Days Better Living Course and other workshops like Swadhyaya and Happiness. You can also practice daily with our Yoga session on Facebook and YouTube as well as get noteworthy guidance from Parisamvada with Dr. Hansaji Yogendra.

We are happy to unlock a few positive outcomes of this lockdown routine like abundance of time for self and family, being more self-reliant, making the most from minimal resources, reduction in pollution as well as crimes, etc. Beautiful changes are also seen in the nature around us as we can hear birds chirping more than usual and animals wandering around without fear.

Words cannot do justice in expressing our gratitude towards all these seless heroes who are ghting at the front lines to save our nation. The Yoga Institute is honoured to be able to assist these brave individuals by regularly serving sattvic meals to them.

Namaste,

This lockdown period has been an eye opener for all of us, showing us what actually matters at the end of the day. With our regular practice of a Yoga way of living, we are able to build stronger relationships with our family and have a positive mindset and perspective of situations. Proper food, relaxation and positive thoughts are the core ingredients for a healthy yogic lifestyle. When we are healthy, we can do our bit to contribute and face any type of crisis.

What are you waiting for! Keep learning, keep practicing. Stay home, stay healthy.

Honoring the mother of our family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the inuence of all the mothers on this planet, we wish you all a Happy Mother’s Day.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Smt. Hansaji J. YogendraDirector, The Yoga Institute.

“What will happen?”

“When will this end?”

In the present times, COVID-19 is the root cause of all our stress and worries. It has completely pulled us in the center of the spiral with thoughts that have no answers.

oga always recommends for us to live in the present

Ymoment. We must not worry about the future or be stuck in the past, all we have is this day - today. And we must

live it to its optimum. There is absolutely no way in which you can run away from your present. We must prepare ourselves to face the situation, head-on, deal with it, and simply move on. All that you have in your control is to equip yourself better to the situation, in order to deal with it.

“Why are we facing this?”

These questions have no denite answers. So instead of seeking them, try to alter your thinking and think about - what you can actually do in this situation! All you have to do is act according to what the current situation demands and what is required of you to do. In this case - stay at home, practice Yoga, and build up your immunity. Our bodies are designed in such a way that we have a great neuro network within us. This network acts like a transmitter that releases ‘ght or ight’ hormones in us, depending on the situation that we are in. There is a story that describes this better, which is based on Vivekananda and his Guru - Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. One day Vivekananda was walking towards his ashram when a few monkeys came in his way. On seeing them, Vivekananda’s instinct was to get scared, and he tried shooing them away, which further

When students are unable to clear an important examination, their mind starts considering the option of committing suicide. However, the police taught a good lesson to one such student. He explained: “Now you will die but you will be born again, and you will have to appear for the same exam again. Might as well not commit suicide and re-attempt next year.”

aggravated the monkeys. Looking at this from a distance, his Guru came and calmly advised him to stand still, face the situation, and look the monkeys in the eye. Vivekananda obliged and stood still and soon, all the monkeys went away peacefully.

This is nothing but Karma Theory. We are now in such a situation. Wherein we can’t do much to change it, but all we can do is face it. Running away won’t solve our problems and neither would our instant reaction to the situation. AlwaysHan take your time, think things through and then act accordingly, that’s how we can win our battles against all ghts.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Shobhna Arora

During my teenage years, one morning in Vrindavan, my hometown, my mother switched on the television, pulled the sheets away from my face and tried her best to show me someone who was explaining how to do some yoga asanas on TV. A sweet voice entered my ears and I slowly opened my eyes to see a lady teaching yogic ways of living. I was least interested in doing physical activity at that time, but the memory of her face always remained in my mind.

After a decade, in April 2000, I came to The Yoga Institute on a suggestion to attend the prenatal yoga camp. After the formalities and introductions, everyone stood up to welcome Hansaji who was coming to offer us some guidance. As soon as I saw her, that teenage memory came alive in front of my eyes. I was thrilled to see her as I had never in my dreams thought I would see her in person. Her graceful personality left an impression on my mind and my soul.

After giving birth to my daughter, I got caught up with taking care of her and my work. In 2002, my husband and I joined the couple’s class and since then, our connection with Hansaji, Doctor Saheb and the Institute has become stronger day by day. I grew both mentally and emotionally every time I interacted with Hansaji, whom I always saw as a mother guiding a daughter. Her wise guidance helped me take every small and big decision in my life correctly. Once, she told me how it would be a good idea to resign from my work and focus on my family and my daughter and explained that my duty towards my family was more important than nancial growth. Being a high prole job, it was tough for me but I decided to unquestioningly follow her advice. It turned out to be the absolutely right decision for me. I realised that if I hadn’t quit my job at the time, I would have missed the crucial early years of my daughter’s development and other important family responsibilities.

My biggest learning from her was that I can be happy and content if I do something good for others without any expectations. She taught me to do the right karmas and to perform my duties with patience and a big smile. Like everyone else, I faced many ups and downs in the past 20 years but Hansaji always stood by me and my family like a lighthouse, showing the right path, and she never let me feel low. My daughter was also fortunate to learn the right values under her

Hansaji has guided me through every step of my motherhood and other issues. Whenever I went to her for guidance, I never came back empty handed. She always solved my problems with ease and showed me the right path with a smile and a big hug. I still wonder how she has the right solution for all my problems.

‘Thank you’ is too small a phrase to express my gratitude for her. I have matured from a girl to a responsible woman with the right attitude, a clear vision, healthy lifestyle and overall, a better human being, just because of Hansaji. Thank you Hansa Maa for being in my life.

WEIGHT LOSS

Weight gain is caused by an excess intake of food and decreased physical activity. The extra food we eat turns into fat and is stored as deposits of fat in the tissues, especially in the region of the abdomen and the hips. They are not only undesired by many, but also prove difcult to remove. This

he human body is made of trillions of cells. Each cell

Ttakes in nutrition from the food we eat and converts those nutrients into energy, which is utilised by cells for their

functions.

excess accumulation of fat in the pelvic region results in constipation, which is one of the major causes of other health issues.

During this challenging time, when we are sitting at home, food serves as a distraction sometimes and we indulge in emotional eating. Instead of dealing with the painful situation, we often tend to eat comfort food, especially sugary stuff or fried food, and this can be a big hurdle in the path on our weight loss journey.

YOGA MD

Losing weight is a long process. One should not reduce more than ⅔ kgs a month unless one feels strong enough to withstand the loss. The question is how to lose weight and stay healthy?

Yoga considers that the human body is made up of a physical body, a mind and a soul, and the three parts are so dependent on each other that any disturbance in any part affects the whole system. So the approach has to be holistic.

There are 4 pillars for a yogic lifestyle called Ahar, Vihar, Achar, Vichar which can help us manage our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

AHAR

Diet plays a 70% role in losing weight and the rest is exercise and good sleep.

When you get up in the morning, drink one glass of warm water, adding if possible a few drops of lime juice and a little bit of honey. It helps in loosening the bowels and evacuation. Keeping the stomach clean and free of toxins aids in keeping the body t and healthy.

The proper functioning of our system depends on what we eat, how much we eat, when we eat and with what state of mind we eat. Our body needs all the nutrients in the form of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Yoga doesn't talk about fasting or feasting, it talks about moderation in eating, i.e. mitahara.

• Eat Sattvic food, which is nutritious and low in calories. It consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts. So 50% of the diet should be natural food with proper bre content, which not only helps you feel fuller for longer, but also helps in proper movement of food into your digestive system, keeping your digestive system healthy.

• Chew your food well and eat slowly - a meal should last for at least 20 minutes. It helps in building a connection with your food, which is going to nourish your system.

VIHAR

• Eat small, frequent meals for better absorption. Do not overload your stomach. If you overeat, food will remain in the stomach for a longer time, making it difcult to digest and will accumulate as toxins in the system.

• Dinner should be the lightest meal and should include soups or khichdi. It should be taken at least 3 hours before going to bed.

Sleep is very important as it enables the body to repair and be t

• Avoid eating between your meals, your stomach needs rest.

• Drink boiled and ltered water: 1-2 glasses of water 1 hour before meals and half an hour after meals. Avoid drinking water during meals as water has a tendency to wash away things. It will dilute the acids and digestives juices in the stomach necessary for digesting the food.

• Avoid as much as possible fried and spicy food - this creates acidity.

An important factor of the holistic system is Vihar which we understand as rest, recreation and sleep.

• Observe your state of mind when you eat. If you overeat, you feel lethargic and don't get enough motivation for your physical activity also.

ACHAR

Our psychological state affects our physical health. If our thought process is not right, it is negative. It creates stress in our system, leading to a release of stress hormones that affect our system in a big way. It leads to emotional eating, consuming quickly whatever is convenient, without enjoyment.

A person who does not follow the right routine will never be able to manage weight correctly or permanently.

VICHAR

Relaxation: Relaxation does not entirely depend on position or place; it is a state of mind. Sitting in a faulty posture and watching TV or being on the phone makes us more tired, so learn to relax consciously. The techniques taught at The Yoga Institute like shavasana, makarasana, dhradasana, nispanda bhava help us in conscious relaxation. Do whichever technique works for you.

and ready for another day. If you don't sleep well, you may feel lethargic the next day, resulting in a disturbance of your routine.

• Exercise regularly. Body fat gets redistributed through regular exercise. During exercise sessions that are longer than 30 to 35 mins, body fat is used more than carbohydrates for deriving energy.

Become aware of your thoughts, feelings and habits. A person who is aware knows their body better, is cautious about their lifestyle, diet and other factors.

Recreation: In this challenging time, we need to indulge ourselves in hobbies like dancing, painting, etc. that will help us in breaking negative patterns that settle in our system over time.

• Follow a routine, take proper meals at the right time.

• Avoid sitting in one place for a long time.

Asanas like hastpadangusthan asana, vakrasana, konasana and ardha matsyendra are very benecial.

• It is necessary to do simple asanas and pranayamas twice a day. Asanas that help in extreme stretching cause deep pressure both on the muscular tissues as well as on the organs closely associated with them.

Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage it and how to use it to help us. The rst important step is acceptance. Learn to accept things the way they are, love yourself and work on managing your weight. Learn to moderate your physical reactions to stress. Slow, deep breathing will bring your heartrate and respiration back to normal.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Many times, it becomes difcult for us to face the challenges of life and that's the time when we feel we need an angel to help us to come out of the situation. Maybe God was well aware of it and so he gave this ability to all mothers so that they can help their kids in times of crisis.

In April 2015 when I joined The Yoga Institute, Hansji was our Yoga guru. The best thing I learnt from her in the early days was that yoga is awareness; being in the moment is the most important thing. Yoga for householders is what the Institute believes in and sincerely practices and teaches. It is this approach that has made me a fan of the Institute.

I do not even remember how all changed from Hansaji to Hansama. It's those simple things she does to make you feel at home, her pleasant smile and her affectionate ways. She never makes anyone feel neglected, however busy she may be. Hansama has an unbelievable memory and she remembers everyone by name and also for what problem he/she approached her for. The best thing in Ma is that she has out-of-the-box but very effective and simple remedies to complex problems. Yes, this is what is different at TYI, the love and affection that everyone gets from Hansama.

Hansama has a unique ability to deal with people, so her solutions are never the same, they change from person to person. But one thing is for sure: The one who follows her advice is going to lead a life of peace, which is more important than anything else.

Hansama is an internationally acclaimed personality busy with so many assignments but I have never ever found difculty in meeting her. I still remember three years ago when I was facing an upheaval in my personal life. Things were bad all around but more than that, my relationship with my better half had become bitter and that was more painful than other issues. In these times of crisis, I could see no one but Hansaji who could help me. One day, I made up my mind and approached her. She heard everything patiently and just asked me to join the couples class and come back to her after a few months. The solution suggested by her was difcult for me to accept because there were only two sessions in a month and I did not want for the worsening situation to drag on more, but with no other option I decided to give it a try. In just two months’ time, that is in 4 sessions, many of our doubts were cleared and we did not even realise how and when things went back to normal.

I take many children’s camps at the Institute and whenever I introduce myself, I don't forget to mention that I am a blessed soul to have two mothers: one who has given birth to me and the other who has shown me the right way to live amidst all problems.

Especially in these days of lockdown, I can feel Hansama is there guiding me because she has already prepared us for all these eventualities. Hansama in many of her lectures has always been talking about problems in life and how problems pass by. Her stories on ‘this too shall pass’ is what is giving strength in these difcult times.

TYI NEWS HEADLINES > SOCIAL SERVICE INITIATIVES

Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, shared: “This global pandemic phase is a challenging situation for the entire world population, close to 8 billion people. It is a testing time where we all have to do our bit and overcome it together as one unanimous community. Apart from seriously following the current golden rule of social distancing and respecting the lockdown decision, we have to also help each other out through possible ways that we are allowed to. The Yoga Institute is serving satvik lunch meals to over 1000 public welfare ofcers and will continue to do so for the rest of the lockdown period. Through this initiative we express our gratitude and applaud the heroic efforts of these public welfare ofcers.”

The Yoga Institute continues to distribute hygienic satvik lunch meals to over 1000 individuals belonging to the Police force, BMC ofce workers, medical staff and daily wage workers each day during the lockdown 2.0.

In this hour of need with the entire nation under lockdown, The Yoga Institute is doing its bit by preparing and distributing hygienic satvik lunch meals to around 1000 individuals each day. The capacity is there to serve thousands more. This initiative covers the true unsung heroes of the current Covid-19 crisis – policemen, BMC staff, medical workers, paramedics, daily wage workers and other individuals.

It is true that some children do not take to this approach because there is conict in the behaviour of one of the parents, or that the environment outside the home or of neighbours inuences the child’s mind and thus counters the effect sought to be produced at home. It is also possible that heredity plays a vital part and that the child’s own potential desire complexes make dents in the expected behaviour. Margin for these unexpected or potential inuences have to be affected through continuous and precise habituation while at home, till the child subconsciously adopts or evolves a new pattern suited to it under given situations. It should be corrected if hypocrit ical or

Since one and all are entitled to the study of Yoga, according to the authorities, and since age is no bar to make a beginning, the question arises as to what kind of Yoga education can be imparted to young children. There are not a few parents, especially those interested in the Yoga way of life, who aspire to make their progeny Yoga- conscious and thus to lay on the study of Yoga as early as possible.

Parents interested in t he cu l t u ra l and scientic bringing-up of their children, with a view not only to human ize bu t to s u p e r - h u m a n i z e their children, could make a beginning by providing them with t h e e s s e n t i a l environment in the form of a personal Yoga behaviour at home. The ear ly impressions on the ch i l d ’s m ind a re amongst the most p r o f o u n d , a n d nothing impresses both its conscious and subconscious mind so powerfully as all what it sees around it. Its natural impulse to imitate requires that it should be offered nothing less than concrete examples of the way of Yoga life one would wish for it. This, in turn, means that the parents themselves should follow strictly the Yoga way of life, thus creating the necessary environment for the child.

schizorhythmic tendencies become evident during such training.

In consequence, violence, untruth, selshness, emotional exhibitionism, and impurity in every sphere of life whether in thought, word or deed have to be scrupulously avoided during the day-to-day living. As a positive measure with acts of self

den ia l , sac r i ce , creat ive a l t ru ism, equanimity, detached attitude, poise and joy of living, the parents should infuse in the child’s mind the urge and adorat ion for mental puri ty and right behaviour. Any c o n t r a r y l e a n i n g should be supervised and corrected, as soon as detected and a s o f t e n a s necessary, without the least resort to indelicate measures, which may arouse its antipathy. Love and purity reected in the practical life of the parents constitute the best form of child

education at a higher level alike not a small part in the growth of anatomy and physiology of the child’s mind which, of course, determines and shapes, in a large measure, its personality (citta).

Viewed progressively, such an ideal environmental background further prevents the child from sipping into hypocritical artices of behaviourism. With so much achieved and provided for by the parents themselves, after the third year, the child may be initiated in the elementary practices of psychosomatic discipline like self-control, silence, closure of the eyes for training in inwardness, relaxation, physical education through postural xation of no longer than ve minutes and rhythmic breathing in the meditative or prayer poses and such like suitable measures forming a miniature Yoga curriculum as would enlarge the child’s spiritual prowess through gradual control over emotions, evil temptations, sensate side pressures and animal surges.

YOGIC INSIGHTS

s there a life school where one learns how to live? The

Iobjective of such a life school of course will not be in helping to acquire money, or power, or pleasure but rather in sharing

and teaching the art of a healthy way of life at physical, mental and spiritual levels.

Caring, mindfulness and discipline will be its hallmark rather than processing tall buildings and an expansive campus. The hordes of seekers and paid workers that hover around such a life-school are not as important as the vibrations of peace of those within the campus.

All activities that go here, including interpersonal relationships in classrooms and administrative ofces will lend to a spiritual awareness. Emotional tension will get resolved against a larger understanding of the incomprehensible and irresistible twists and turns of life. Whether it is learning of asanas or learning of the Yoga Sutras, the learning would go on, adding to sattvika experiences. The need for a specic technique will diminish in

face of a change in values, motivation, attitudes and habits. Yogic loving will re-establish the homeostatic balance, and the treatment of disease will be a by-product of a yogic life. The faith in a higher reality will instill a positive approach to life and will denitely lead to a reduction in oating states of anxiety responsible for many psychosomatic and neurotic conditions. One would learn to participate fully in any and all activities all day long. This would lead to a joy in living and meaningfulness of life. The life-school would gain. The students would not only learn this but would teach it to others as well, through sharing.

Can we dream of such centres of learning in the country? It does not matter if we call these life-school “The Yoga Institute” or if we call it by other names. There is an overwhelming need today for such life-schools in the society, in this country as well as in other countries. Because what we seem lacking is not in various skills involved in our work or massive information related to it, but in actual living models and in living experiences of the fullness of life.

Summer brings a lot of memories and along with that brings heat and tiresome noon. It is also the time where you enjoy different types of coolers, keeping you hydrated and fresh.

These are some home made coolers that each one can try this summer. You can always replace the sugar with jaggery syrup. Lastly, do not forget to sip water at regular intervals. TESTIMONIAL

Brahmanand Siingh National Award Director

I was just an ordinary housewife when I joined The Yoga Institute doing my 7 Days Health Camp. I was just like an unpolished diamond but Dr. Sahab and Hansaji polished me; they taught me how to live life. Over the period of time, I became a condent lady as they made me aware of myself and how we can use our unlimited potential within us. I've been teaching at The Yoga Institute for quite sometime now and I’m extremely content with it. This place has been my Karma Bhoomi and I owe everything to Dr. Sahab and Hansaji.

Pallavi MehtaTeacher at The Yoga Institute

We need you, The Yoga Institute, more today than ever before. We need to slow down, pause, look inside and know how to manage a balanced life as a householder today.

The corona times of the past few months have only crystallised to us the way The Yoga Institute has been propounding for years now: go slow, be mindful, maintain balance, understand nature, recognise where we are going overboard and that the overall purpose of life is much higher than just being in the rat race and letting life slip away from our grip!

The Yoga Institute, with its hundred-year-history and its knowledge of thousands of years of ancient wisdom, is the closest today that we can come to thinking of navigating a balanced life and to acquiring a mindset that helps us lead that life of equanimity, by understanding a yogic way of life.

While the lockdown has brought many of us to face realities of life like never before, the Institute has made pioneering attempts to use technology and bring the yogic life and mindset to everyone’s homes.

The yoga experience with The Yoga Institute at the NIIF ofce on February 25, 2020 was a great experience.

The session was very nice, relaxing and informative. It was more in the meditative/relaxation zone, rather than an actual yoga workout. After a busy day, it was good to do the relaxation exercises

sitting on a chair – a position most of us are in for most of our work day. As the instructor mentioned, the demo session was only the “menu card” of various practices/exercises that could be done in yoga and our colleagues are excited to dive more into it post Covid-19 days. We look forward to our future

association with The Yoga Institute.

TESTIMONIAL

It's been a great journey to be a part of this splendid Institute, which teaches you all the real aspects of Yoga. When I rst came here, I didn't have much interest to be honest, but after spending a day here, I fell in love with all its people, atmosphere, surroundings, food, and classroom environment. I have known so many beautiful souls here, all coming with a different story and Yoga means a lot to all of them. This institute taught me how to be independent, condent, and proud of who I am.

The three months I spent here at The Yoga Institute were extraordinary. With each passing day, I was learning more and more about yoga, the philosophy, about my own body and about myself. The

classes, the teachers, the food, the fellow students and the environment in the institute have played an instrumental role in making my journey here an enriching one. The Institute has meticulously

chosen subjects to ensure they add value to our yogic journey. Furthermore, the teachers here are so passionate, committed, knowledgeable and ever-ready to help. They have seamlessly integrated new

concepts, ideologies and philosophies with everyday concepts, making it relatable and relevant.

I can condently say I’m walking out of the Institute not only as a teacher equipped to pass on the knowledge of yoga but also as a more learned and aware individual.

Namaste

Time ies. Before going to school, I had many thoughts in my head. Worried about whether the language barrier, lifestyle habits and eating habits would become the country I always wanted to go to and my impression of my favorite - Yoga - would be affected. The rst week of the course is like trying to practice some new poses. The changes in thoughts and actions range from the initial untness and rustiness to slowly experiencing the changes in every detail. In the learning process, each of us experienced a lot of changes in thoughts, emotions, and physical actions, which brought a lot of growth experience, especially this new type of pneumonia. As a Chinese student, it is even more stressful. The whole atmosphere of the school makes me feel that this is a home, and I am a member of this big family. Not only can it give you a place of knowledge and ability, but also the love and love link between people. We take care of each other's health carefully. Our most respected Hansaji cares about the food, daily life and thoughts of each of us. I am very proud to be a member of this big family.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

MAY 2020 ISSUE

“Try to achieve that in life which

helps not only you but also others.”

Take electricity as an example. Can we call it heat ? No, nor is it light alone. The truth is that it is both light and heat, but at the same time it cannot be called one or the other separately. It is the same with the brain activity, mind and consciousness.

But when all these three elements of inner cognition are combined for the knowledge of any object, the object becomes highly magnied and transparent which naturally leads to its perfect knowledge.

As Dharana, Dhyan and Samadhi collectively termed ‘ Samyama ‘ becomes rmer and rmer, so does the Samadhi-condition becomes more and more lucid. One has to work on different planes of consciousness.

The brain activity, mind and consciousness all three are required for deeper knowledge of a thing. These three are different and independent of one another and have their own characteristics.

Shri Yogendraji -

In Samyama, therefore, these things are all put in ‘ Rhythmic Vibrations ‘ where the object remains undisturbed.

Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

Brain activity is the physical manifestation of the mind-stuff, while Mind is the second reection of consciousness. Again this consciousness is dependent for its existence on the spirit; rather it is characteristic of the spirit itself. So when you take away the electricity, you neither have heat or light. In the same way if spirit is taken away, as it were, there is no consciousness, no mind and consequently no brain activity.
