Sightseeing in Yogyakarta

Visit Borobudur Temple

Borobudur is a 9th Century Buddhist Temple located in Magelang, about 1 hour drive Yogyakarta. It is one of the

greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. It consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by

a central dome (stupa). The temple was designed in Javanese Buddhist architecture that blends Indonesian indigenous

cult of ancestor worship and the Buddhist concept of attaining Nirvana. The monument guides pilgrims through an

extensive system of stairways and corridors with narrative relief panels on the walls about Buddhas teachings. The

journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path around the monument and ascends to the

top through 3 levels symbolic of Buddhist cosmology, Kamadhatu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms)

and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). Borobudur is regarded as the largest and most complete ensemble of

Buddhist reliefts in the world.

Visit Candi Mendut

The exquisite Mendut Temple is even older than Borobudur. Here, you can see three magnificent and well preserved

carved stone statues set inside the pyramid-shaped temple. Mendut, Borobudur and Pawon, all of which are Buddhist

temples, are located in one straight line. There is a mutual religious relationship between the three temples, although the

exact ritual process is unknown.

Visit Candi Pawon

Pawon Temple is a small Buddhist Temple and known locally as Candi Pawon) situated in central Java, Indonesia. It is a

beautiful temple in line with Borobudur Temple as well as Mendut Temple. Its location is between two other Buddhist

temples, Borobudur (1.75 km to the northeast) as well as Mendut (1.15 km (0.71 mi) to the southwest). Pawon Temple is

also built during the Sailendra dynasty (8th - 9th centuries). Examines the detail and style of its carving, this temple is

slightly older than Borobudur. Nowadays, this government has appointed it as one of the tourist destinations in Central

Java and a stop point during Borobudur Tours.

Overnight in Yogyakarta.

Day 3 Yogyakarta (Breakfast: Hotel / Lunch: Ndalem Ngabean Restaurant )

Yogyakarta City Tour

Start with a visit to The Sultans Palace, constructed between 1756 and 1790, is a fine example of traditional Javanese

sultanate architecture. Remaining today as the residence of the Sultan, this living museum features a showcase of

Javanese Culture and relics, and depending on your day of visiting there will be a cultural performance ranging from

Golek Menak Puppets to classical Javanese Poetry performance known as Macapat. Continue with a 30 minutes ride

by becak (the local trishaw) and explore the neighboring Kauman village built in the vicinity of the Kraton. This village is

the central keepers of the Islamic religion as authorized by the Sultanate. The small gangs (laneways) of this village are

so designed to ensure minimal disturbance of noise and traffic so as to not interrupt the Santri or Islamic students from

their study. It was also said that by ensuring the laneways were only passable on foot, every man was equal. End your

becak ride at the Taman Sari Water Palace This addition to the royal complex was built over 200 years ago by the first

Sultan with bathing pools for his harem. After visiting a home batik factory you will go to a small artisan Wayang Kulit

factory (the famous Javanese leather puppet) where you will also see a short demonstration of a Wayang Kulit
